Hey Becca, thanks for the video. Just a word of caution. I had this exact greenhouse a few years ago and I had it outside on my porch. I would be really careful about keeping it out of the direct sun because mine got so hot that it literally killed every plant inside in 1 day. Lol it was a total fail for me. Just a word of warning 🙂

I had the milsbo cabinet, and I wouldn't recommend it for a greenhouse. Ya its pretty but its very touchy and it being glass it would make you nervous every time and It also is kinda shakey...I eventually resold the cabinet because I was always nervous even using it once as a bathroom towel cabinet or a glassware cabinet.

Have had that same greenhouse for about four months. I removed the top shelf and the middle support so larger plants can fit. Used the extra shelf to double the shelf below so it is sturdier. Have had no problems at all with it falling apart. My orchids, alocasia and maranta love it! I use a small diffuser to get the humidity up since I live in a dry climate and have a small clamp on fan running all day for circulation. Well worth the price!

DIY suggestion. Yes, with this you will lose some portability: go to big box store and buy the study metal racks. Buy sheet plastic. Cut to fit sides. Hang from the sides with shower curtain hooks/clips or even binder clips. Cut a piece to fit the top. Now you have something larger and sturdier and works the same way to keep plant humidity up. It does not have to be sealed at every seam to keep humidity in. As a matter of fact, some air flow is good to keep mold/mildew at bay.
Watch the begonia carefully for fungus. Stagnant air is the kiss of death to them.

I LOVE your video Becca thank you!! I've had two of these exact same greenhouses since 2016 because every Winter I was losing plants due to my apartment always being cold in the Winter, and scale!! And even though they're alittle wobbly lol, they've been great for my succulents with grow lights and also my tropicals!! I reinforced the shelves with zip ties and I even had to get a fan for air circulation, a heater and humidifier. In the Winter I have them both away from my south-facing window, and in the Spring I place one back in the window and leave the other one with grow lights against the wall!! They are great especially for growing seeds, propagation and keeping my kitty away from my plants!!💖😁

I use mine for seed starting and love it. It's also good for rehab plants. Just keep it in the shade or use a shade cloth bc in direct sun you'll bake your plants. I found mine at Walmart on clearance for $15.

    • @WhitneyHempsey
      @WhitneyHempsey 4 года назад

Also, if you want to make it more secure, grab some silicone adhesive and just glue each shelf frame together, but leave the vertical poles unglued. Then you can break it down still, but moving it won't result in your shelves falling apart. It's easier to keep the vertical poles in place than the horizontal poles.

For taller plants you could always move a middle shelf to the very bottom, so you have a larger gap between two in the middle! That’s what I did for the ones I have, I felt like I was putting together a puzzle 😂 I even connected two together at one point! And I will say, I did have to have my boyfriend push some of them into the holes, it was really difficult and I couldn’t get them all the way in by myself.

I have the same greenhouse and use it for seed starting. It definitely fell apart a few times. The solution that's worked for me is to tie twine where each center shelf pole is, holding the sides tightly together. It's not beautiful, but my seedlings are thriving and I'm no longer worried of losing them to collapse!

So forgive the unsolicited infodump, but for the anthurium gloriosum, it looks like the pink spiky bits are the cataphylls, which is where the new leaves hang out while they are developing, and then they bust out when they are ready. One day it might be just one reddish spike (that kind of 'new growth' reddish colour anthuriums and philos get) and then the next day there are two because the new baby leaf has hatched out. Even after the leaf busts out, leave the cataphyll alone though, because the next cataphyll will come from out of there as well. They will dry up on their own when they have finished their job.
Also, I dunno if this happens with the fancy anthuriums too, but it happens sometimes with my andreanum, where once in a while it looks like the leaf is stuck in the cataphyll and it's twisting and contorting itself all up to get out- resist the urge to try to get in there and loosen things up so it can escape. I know it looks like it's crying for help but don't touch it! The leaf will wind up weird! Mist it with some water, and that will soften things up enough that it will bust out on its own and straighten up like nothing happened.
Love the real talk about the greenhouse. Leo's haircut looks cute!

with your raffa defora cut all the leaves in half and only leave one leaf whole. Your plant will then produce more roots to sustain itself. All the nutrients are going into the leaf and not enough roots to keep it alive

Glue would help with the structural problem you’re having but I used a rubber mallet to make sure the poles were really in there. I haven’t had an issue since I got them and have not had to glue them. I have mine pretty packed with plants too so the shelves are supporting a lot of weight. They are not the cutest but they’re right inside my front door, the winters can be bad here, but since they’re so packed I can roll them open in the summer and my porch is really humid and it’s pretty to walk into and see right away

I owned one of these a few years back and the quality is not good at all. tie wraps are probably your best best to hold the poles in place. I have let mine go and replaced it with a couple of green houses from IKEA (they no longer sell the one that I have). I prefer the IKEA ones b/c it is stable, with doors vs the plastic cover, and you can add lighting to it (I added some and it makes it look so much nicer). Best to your greenhouse shopping.

I have this exact same green house but mine is outside, in fact i have two! I also found it to be not structurally sound. However I used PTFE tape (used by plumbers on pipes) and wrapped all the ends of the poles making them tighter, then during the summer (covers off) I srapped the two back to back, which firmed them a lot. I also dont like the zips, one from the top in a "door" shape would be better.
But all in all, i think it's worth it. After all the plants love it.
I know it seems drastic, but when I'm trying to rescue something with as little root as you had on the, tetraspermum (?) I chop most of the leaf off, to stop the evaporation, sometimes it helps (not always!)

    Story time.
I had a very similar if not the same green house. It got super rickety and in frustration I put it out on the back deck, empty. We had Thunderstorm and it blew over and the plastic made hammocks for rain water. The sun came out in the coming days but the puddles of rain water stayed. They created focused sunlight beams that melted the plastic on the underside and actually started to char the deck surface!!!

You could go down the used furniture route and get a glass cabinet. It would be cheaper than the $200 from ikea.

Maybe try using some kind of wire and wrap around the corners to secure the poles to the shelves? or maybe duck tape? hey it might work for a temp. fix.

I'm sorry to hear you and Leo had a bad experience with your dog groomer :( I used to be a groomer for 8 years and I know how hard it can be to find a good one. Sometimes it is really necessary to shave a dog's coat, depending on how tangled the hair is. It's always different with each dog, but some dogs don't tolerate the brushing needed to detangle their coat and sometimes it's just too tangled and it will stress the dog to brush it. BUT groomers should always be upfront about what they can/can't do for your dog and if they can't perform the service you specifically request they need to contact you and make sure you are ok with a different cut/shave. If I can offer just one piece of advice, once you find a good groomer that you and Leo both like KEEP THEM. If he goes to the same groomer each time Leo will learn to trust them and feel more comfortable, and the groomer will be more familiar with Leo also. Anyway, sorry for the long comment! Always enjoy your channel :)

Thank you for this!! This last experience was so much more positive and I’m really glad they took good care of him. The first time was traumatizing 🥺 we just have to be better about brushing him so he doesn’t have to get a shave every time! Haha.

i also have one😂its ugly but my plants love it…so I just decided to put it in my walk in closet with a sunroof for nobody to see except me and my husband😌I don’t have any structural problem with it though because I’m just so OC maybe I hammered them nice and tight when I assembled them…

High humidity plant struggles are sooo relatable 🙈 I will most likely invest in that IKEA cabinet you were talking about, I just love the look of them so much and my plants will hopefully love it too 😍 Love your review of this cheap one you bought, definitely worth it to try it out for humidity loving plants or if you need to acclimate plants from shipping or nurse them back to health 👍🏻

You could sure up the poles and keep it up permanently … I purchased one and that’s my plan. Good luck

One more thing, as a way to make mine more structurally sound I used zip ties to connect the shelves to the frame and stabilize the whole thing. That worked well but make it even uglier. Lol

  • @paulabollers6396

I know that these greenhouses are economical and work well but I just hate the way they look. I am definitely going to get the IKEA glass cabinets for next winter. The problem is always that the plants outgrown any type of enclosures pretty quickly but it should be good for smaller plants and propagations.

I like the greenhouse Becca, and when I have the space for one I plan on buying one, I know you feel like it's an eyesore, but it really isn't that bad looking. For now I just don't have any room, but when I have my sunroom I will have a spot for one and I will be purchasing one. Thanks so much Becca, great video. Leo is so adorable with his new haircut. I hope you are staying safe and healthy, the crazyiness needs to calm down. Sending love and lots of hugs, see you soon, bye for now.
