What's your favorite junk food? Mine, as you could probably tell from the video, is sour cream & onion potato chips lol. A big thank you to Allen for editing this video - please check out his channel and get him to 1k subscribers because it would be very funny if he wasn't allowed to act like he's a channel no one's heard of anymore: www.youtube.com/@zellbi
TLDR, if a show does a lot of things well it can be difficult to truly understand your tastes or how the specific elements work on their own. In mid-tier shows that only do one or two things well it's much easier to "isolate" key components by seeing what can - and cannot - carry a story on its own.
Love series like Hyouka (obviously), Eva, and Mob Psycho, but I'll also binge watch all of Takagi-san because it gives me a cozy feeling and a chuckle here and there. More egregiously, I still watch every new season of MHA and Demon Slayer not because I like the series anymore, but in hopes that they do anything that piques my interest; for them to play a card I wouldn't expect (and for me to actually like it). Favorite mid anime is Quintessential Quintuplets, favorite junk food is baked potato chips.
I too still intentionally procrastinate from watching some "materpiece" series. Before I watch one, I always have this feeling that I'm obligated to enjoy it because everybody else does. Mid anime is just easier to watch. I'm surprised how often these mid anime actually entertained me, even if it's just barely.
“You can only watch it for the first time once” is the thought that plagues me and causes the same issue. If I’m not in the perfect headspace I could ruin this great one time experience. Oh how to care less so I can enjoy more
Idk, I think it's not good anime per se, but anime with unclear messages (for me at least, I'm kinda dumb), because, for example, I'm completely fine watching some lighter good anime, like usagi drop, natsume yuujinchou, etc
My favorite mid anime, hands-down, will probably always be Sword Art Online. It made me realize that I loved watching/reading about people coming together, from different walks of life, and building long-lasting connections, whether love or otherwise (though I much prefer if it is about love). It's a bit like the concept of 'found-family' to me, but less of a focus on the previous suffering of the characters that cause them to need those connections in the first place, and more of a focus on their new experiences together as their bonds deepen and they become inseparable, taking on whatever the world throws at them together. That's the main reason and thing I still look for in new SAO seasons, manga, or light novels. And, as well, why I love the VRMMO genre. There's no greater feast for my heart than seeing a bunch of gamers having fun together. Naturally, I tend to be drawn towards the romance genre for this same reason, too. As, in most romances, the characters often are from different walks of life and often do find solace in one another.
As someone who watches a lot of mid shows, I definitely get you. There's usually a couple interesting elements to find when you plum the depths of mediocrity and you come away with a greater appreciation for the better shows that also do those interesting elements. As for my own favorite mid anime, it's kind of hard to pick. Probably "Mikakunin de Shinkoukei", or "Engaged to the Unidentified". It's a bog standard highschool romcom where the girl main character ends up engaged with and falls for what is essentially a cryptid. The romance is cute but nothing special; the comedy is sometimes chuckle worthy but rarely funnier; the characters have moments that seem to imply depth, but spend most of the show being flat and fairly predictable. The only really stand-out thing about it is the production values and/or animation of many scenes. It's actually kind of wild how good the show ends up looking in those scenes when every other scene is usually just moving versions of their manga panels.
Great video. I think "mid" is close to "indifference". 90% of the time I pick up and watch a series base on poster, screenshot and clips that got my attention. Series I love make excited no matter how many times I watch it and I want to look it up further. Series I dislike/hate just pisses me off. Mid is like a seasonal filler that I just watch because it's just something in between the series I'm waiting for and I'll never think of it again after watching it once.
Sometimes, you just have to ask yourself if you're taking anime too seriously or if you've been watching too much of it People also generally hate things that resemble themselves, which is probably why they dislike mid anime
My fav "mid" anime i recall enjoying are Parallel world Pharmacy and More Than Lovers but Not A Married Couple ! lol I like what I like. I think "mid" has become such a nothing word now and now just means bad to most people. This was an awesome video! Thanks! :D
I was just talking to a friend about mid anime the other day and specifically referenced Nisekoi, so its such a wild coincidence that you made this video WITH Nisekoi in the thumbnail! Shows like Nisekoi bring to light some of the meta elements that make mid shows enjoyable. Shaft, as you pointed out, really went above and beyond for a romcom. Nao Toyama and Kana Hanazawa did a great job in the lead roles, and to this day their Nisekoi roles are still some of their most loved. The show also gave us an overabundance of great OPs and EDs with Rally Go Round and Recover Decoration really standing out. S2 also ended in 2015, transitioning many anime onlys into reading the manga which ended in 2016. Being part of the online manga community when Nisekoi ended was really fun. The same could be said for series like Quintuplets and Domestic Girlfriend, where the story might not be great, but being along for the ride with the community makes it special. To this day, there's still a small generation of weebs out there who will get really heated when you ask them to choose between Kosaki and Chitoge. Then sometimes theres shows that you know will be mid, but watch anyways in hopes that they turn out exactly as you expect, or somehow end up good. After Jun Maeda burned us with Charlotte, I knew that The Day I Became a God would also probably end up the same way. I was delighted when it fell apart. Then on other side, there's shows like Shinobi no Ittoki, where the show doesn't look promising, starts out weak, but ends up being better than you first expected. It was never good, but I was rooting for it like a sports team by the end of the season. Sometimes, enjoying an anime goes way beyond just the show itself.
I think about this all the time, and I'm glad someone made it a topic before me. My main concern is how "Mid" was used to dismiss anime discourses (maybe less serious nowadays?). It's also important to be able to extract what stands out when a show didn't impress in a deeper level. And that's partly on the viewer's participation. Boiling everything down to a catchy word disservices the multifaceted ways put in to make these shows happen. These days, shows are being cycled out of people's mind faster and faster. Even then, we shouldn't forget every shows have potentials to touch people's heart. Sometimes for the first time. And THAT matters at the long run. When Mid was used forefront to express one's superiority on taste, that's LOW.
I have definitely come to enjoy mid shows recently, watching shows like loving yamada at lvl 999 and masamune have been real good times, but I find a common pattern for myself with every mid show, and even shows that I do find are a step above mid, that they can be a struggle to keep up with when currently airing. I only watched episode one of masamune season 2 so far, stuff like the dangers in my heart, and eminence in shadow, I was able to binge pretty easy but couldn't stick around when I caught up to the week to week. demon slayer and fireforce, even something like doctor stone, they just don't hold my attention outside of watching it, which makes it hard to have to wait every week just to get the next small piece. where as shows like frieren and jujutsu kaisen keep me coming back the moment a new episode drops, shows that I think about throughout the week that maintain an excitement for new content to come out. I even still get this feeling for shows that haven't aired in a long while or have already finished years ago, re:zero season 2, Oregairu, haikyuu, shows that I have clear fond memories of when the episodes were releasing, that filled my mind in the time between episodes, and that still hold a strong place in my mind. I feel those shows have almost spoiled the rest of seasonal anime for me, though I don't really see it as a bad thing, because the value of mid shows is different to me, there's no stress in not keeping up, no stress in missing out, it comforting, if I want to put it down after episode 5 and never pick it up again, whatever, maybe I enjoyed what I saw, but who cares, if I left the bag of chips out to long and they went stale, I'll just buy a new bag, maybe the same flavour or maybe something new I hadn't tried before.
My favorite part about mid anime is when that one moment hits on something brilliant, where just for a moment the writers do something inspirational beyond the show's tier. Picasso wasn't always a master and authors are constantly working on their crafts. I really enjoyed plastic memories even though it got very little appreciation, it was all very run of the mill until the last episode when the protagonist's worst fears are realized; not defeated. It touches on something unique by avoiding the trap of subverting expectations so we get to appreciate the real anxiety and dread the characters feel, especially once you see the outcome. As great as it is to participate in classic in the making with everyone, it can feel special to enjoy quiet moments of appreciation with the few.
First I just wanna say I'm so glad to see a new video from you. I LOVE Fire Force and I'm so glad I got to see you talk about it at all. It's a series that definitely gets better and better as it goes and peaks at the end. It does have a pretty slow start I can't disagree with your criticisms. Hopefully season 3 is soon! Also, super random question: have you ever checked out Bloom into You?
i am a sucker for mid romance specifically. it doesnt matter how many versions of the same carbon copy show i watch i always end up enjoying myself. and its hard to top the feeling you get when a mid romance / show becomes something great like quints or tomozaki. also i regret to inform you i watched liar liar also the transition at 8:49 between the aspect ratios was clean af
THIS. I also like to watch some "trash isekais" and some mid shows if i find the time because they make me appreciate the masterpieces even more. The mid shows can also be very entertaining but also pretty boring if you watch to many episodes at once. Some of my favourite "mid shows" are Re:Creators or Iroduku to just name a few. Is Spy x Classroom actully worth watching? Watched 3 episodes which felt like a whole season with their mission, third episode felt like a season finale. Pacing felt so rushed and weird over those eps until the end of the third episode basically only concludes the opening of the show. Since I still have to catch up on shows that I expect to be really good like Eminence in Shadow, I haven't gotten along to continue Spy x Classroom.
You know it’s funny that you bring up Masamune since in all honesty it’s basically the perfect example for me. I know that on an objective level it doesn’t particularly do anything outstanding, but for some reason I gravitated towards it in a way that even some of my all-time favorites had a harder time doing. It’s not high-class art, but it works for the story it legitimately tries to tell and it made me invested with these characters and how it ultimately wraps up by the end of S2. Such a satisfying ending to a show that shouldn’t have grabbed me in the first place the way that it did, but I’m glad I got to experience it.
For some reason I really loved watching Dumbbells, something about the characters and their witty dialogue combined with actual lessons I could use irl kept me engaged and thoroughly entertained the whole way throug
Just came back to say I’m glad you made this video! For the longest, I’ve been trying too hard to find the best shows and keep up with the big hits but I decided to watch Beast Tamer. It doesn’t do anything too different from other fantasy anime but I really enjoyed watching it. This video has reminded me to just watch what I’m feeling from time to time. It’s not always about the top tier shows. Sometimes, the comfort is all you need 🙃
I love mid anime because I can just kind of leave it to the side while I'm playing a videogame or something. From time to time I'll pay attention to the screen when something interesting is happening, but mostly I'll be passively absorbing it and having a great time doing so. It's something I can't do with more dense and demanding shows, where every moment needs your undivided attention. Doing this has also massively improved my passive japanese listening abilities.
when you're watching anime seasonally in significant quantities (10+ shows), mid comes with the territory, and you can't always know something will be mid. and sometimes you have to give mid a chance to become more. I'm watching a Winter show now that I didn't pick up while it was airing, The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil, and to be honest, it'd fail the three episode rule. Not that it's without charm, but it's in episode four where I realized 'hold up, maybe you need to let mid cook for a bit'. it's turned from an adequate show I watched on a whim to something I'll definite complete in the near future, and enjoy. hell, I even went and looked up the manga, and the manga is GREAT. a lot of times what we refer to as 'mid' is something with high highs and low lows, too, which means that there's some greatness buried there, and it may not be the whole show, but it might just be your new Best Girl, or some of the slickest fight choreography you've ever seen, or an immaculate vibe you've found nowhere else.
after you watched almost everything that is considered good or at least that is popular youll wish you could enjoy more "mid" anime because at some point it could become very boring where you have to find niche things that still get you hooked but require a lot of effort into finding. I wish i could enjoy demon slayer or jujutsu kaisen more but i just dont for whatever reason. Being able to enjoy more stuff is a good thing, it really is
Pardon my tangent. I came off the back of the Frieren video, thinking "I'm glad that after all these years, he's still doing well." And I've recommended the show (and your video) to others, hoping that people will grow to have a healthier relationship towards the past. In a sense, I think this video innately tackles a similar topic. Being able to enjoy mid-anime/tv/movie/art really lets you find yourself--your own biases, your own boundaries, just you. In an apt way, this video (which I thought was going to be MID--I'm sorry!!) ended up being so heartfelt and sincere. As a fellow artist who's pivoting into video essays, we need things like this. Videos just for us, art just for us. A healthier relationship towards work and art has been my goal for years now, and I'm glad I can see that in you. I'm cheering you on, man. I really wish you the best.
I actually found isekai smartphone so hilariously mid that I read basically all of the light novel and now I have a sunk cost fallacy combined with Stockholm Syndrome. After a while, it starts getting half-decent, I swear... it only takes 300 chapters for the MC to get crumbs of a personality...
i agree with this SO. HARD. i only discovered this recently when, a couple of seasons ago, i had a sudden desperate CRAVING to just binge through something mid. So, I watched Saihate no Paladin. (and I'm watching s2 this season!) I had never had such a strong desire for mid anime before, and i realized it was for 2 reasons: 1) to make me feel even more adoration towards incredible shows, and 2) to renew my appreciation for anime in general. Mid shows remind me just how much effort goes into making ANY anime, and while I often recognize that in amazing shows, I tend to overlook it in mid shows. Every background art, every bit of voice acting, every carefully chosen shot was a collaboration of dozens of people, working hard to make this MID ASS SHOW. (my favorite mid anime is... Release the Spyce. There's definitely some bare-bones connective tissues between that show and my favorite of all time, Revue Starlight. battle girls? battle girls.)
My favourite "mid" anime have to be the series that make the emotional thematics *hit* with their use of cinematography, sound design, music, and metaphorical imagery (even if the rest of the series isn't trying to do anything special or isn't able to live up to its intentions), especially if trauma & love & found family are major themes. For that reason, I'll always love series like "Sound of the Sky", "Birdie Wing", "Boogiepop & Others", "Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls", and "Harukana Receive", and underappreciated greats like "Flip-Flappers", "Wandering Son", "ID: Invaded", "World Trigger", "Akudama Drive", and "Tada-koi".
There is a lot to be said for narrative junk food. You've just worked a ton of overtime and your week is finally over, and while you want something to enjoy you feel that anything complex would just be wasted on your current emotional state. Or maybe you are on vacation somewhere and just want a couple of episodes of something to help you unwind from dealing with endless crowds of people. These are the perfect times for something light and fluffy, and I mean that in investment more than anything else. I agreed entirely with Sirius as mid-anime, and would throw things like nearly every isekai onto it (Knights and Magic, My Isakei Life, etc) along with the shows with interesting concepts that never get fully fleshed out or have something holding them back from greatness (Our Last Crusade, Fairy Gone, etc).
To me mid means a show which is passable. I enjoy MHA and Demon slayer and consider them good. Gamers is a show which I consider a great comedy show so it's not really mid to me. One series that comes into mind is Astra Lost in Space. I enjoyed it just enough. Looking back at it now the premise felt unique when it first came out but over the years I forgot many things. It didn't make enough of an impression on me to standout.
I think mid is definitely a good term for shows that do one aspect very well and manage to do everything else serviceably enough to not get in the way of it. A show that only does everything serviceably is just boring, and boring is the worst thing a show can be. At least bad shows can be funny. They're often also worth examining as classes in what NOT to do, or as examples of failed ambition (few people set out to make something that's legitimately awful). Though, I don't think I'd quite call mid shows "junk food" -- I think that fits "trash" shows a little better. Trash shows are more like mid-tier isekai, the BIG DUMB BATTLE ROYALE genre, or most harems -- fulfilling baser desires and (often) without any sort of redeeming qualities. I'd have to zoom out to "restaurants" -- trash shows are fast food, and some days, my brain goes "You know what you want? Taco Bell. Right now." despite the fact that I know that it is objectively terrible and manufactured to prey on my baser instincts. Mid shows are that one restaurant where the food is meh, but they have that one appetizer or dessert that's just to die for so you sit through a meal that's just okay to enjoy it.
My favorite mid anime is Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits. It's not gonna win any awards, but it's comfy, cozy, the plot is low-stakes, and I get a lot of fulfillment out of using a show as a springboard to ask, "How would I tweak the direction as a writer?" Sometimes I'll pause a show in the middle of a scene to go, "Okay, I see what they're setting up here, but how would I proceed given what's happened so far?" and then see how close or far off I was.
Started watching anime back in 2012, when SAO first came out and it was all the hype. I still watch animes to this day, but idk if we can get back to the glory of mid 2010s of romcom, harem mid anime fiesta. I appreciate the greats like Tora-dora, Sakurasou, and Steins;gate but to truly understand that great animes are great, you got to watch the mids. Haganai, Mayochiki, and so many countless so called 'mids' (although I love these series in a different way) series came out through the years and I hope new anime watchers that joined the community recently would take the time to watch these series that came out years ago.
I recently started The World God Only Knows and even though it hasn't had much acclaim over the years, I've still been enjoying it! Watch what you think is fun. Thats the best way to do it, i think.
I think for me it's Tokyo Ravens, after binging all of Cyberpunk Edgerunners in a day with a headache, I was tired and checked it out after years of hearing about it and watching the first episode on RUclips years ago, really enjoyed tbhe setting, traditional Japanese exorcism and structures that supported it, whilst I don't think it was horrible I felt incredibly refreshed, the ost reminding me of the Index franchise the opening, second ending theme being sung by my favourite singer. Story ramped up too at an interesting rate. Either that or Ben-to, i just had so much fun with the hijinks and fights in the show
Another reason I find for watching mediocre seasonal anime is that sometimes there's anime out there that I personally find really fun, but you'd never see anyone recommending them even when they aired. Stuff like Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department, Gal to Kyouryuu, etc that I personally like, but that never got much attention. Had I not watched them as they aired, I think its likely that I never would have stumbled upon them.
I like your definition of MID. I don't agree with it myself, but I like it. I don't consider 'narrative junkfood' to be mid, mostly because of how long I have been watching anime and how much varied anime I have seen. I consider Cowboy Bepop to be "narrative junkfood" however, there is absolutely no way I would call it a "mid" show. Even when it released in 2001, I would have considered it "narrative junkfood". But this stems from my age, my experiences watching anime, viewing TV and movies and reading books or short stories. Revisit the concept in a decade or two. ;>
Yikes, I feel awful for the one guy who recognized the girl from Liar Liar in the opening montage and thought, "Finally... an angel has come to validate the six hours I sunk into Liar Liar!" only for said angel to walk up slowly to their specific location and kick them in the teeth instead.
You did not just call Iroduku “mid”, or worse. First anime I’ve seen that has a colorblind protagonist, let alone character. Being colorblind myself, that’s the first anime I’ve related to on a deeply personal level.
i was curious enough to go onto google maps and roam the world looking for the co-ordinates on screen fortunately, it only took 10 minutes would've been much longer to figure out how to use real co-ordinates but for the sake of ease, it points to somewhere called liar lake
For some reason this Video made me think of Hitsugi no Chaika. Probably fits the Bill best for the theme. It was nicely adapted got through it's source material and was generally fine. Still I think the World building had to offer so much more... I'm a fan of not only including "Mid" Anime in my watch list. If I don't suffer through a bad one every now and than, I think I would lose my appreciation of the medium as a whole.
Frieren, zom 100, apothecary diaries are some of the best anime from last and this year. But i have watched crap like: my guard dog, my daughter returned an s class adventurer etc but i think it needs to be there.. i mean how else will you diferentiate between good or bad. OMG AKUDAMA DRIVE was really good
I really love Nisekoi because of how the show looks and for some funny moments but I always felt guilty about loving it because the characters are boring and the story is pure BS so thank you for validsting my point
Akudama drive is actually a gem. It has a fair bit of meat which was pretty fun to dig into. The show made me accidentally write an essay for fun. Will never forgive it for that.
Seeing Kuromukuro in the thumbnail as an example of a "Mid" anime hurts, given how much I remember enjoying it. It is mid, though and that's totally fine. I wish it were loved enough to have a translation of the sequel novel. The OPs and EDs rock. I almost always say favorite anime is Tari Tari, since it's a lesser known show that really stuck with me. I don't know if it qualifies as Mid, because I think it is a really solid show. I have a hard time differentiating between underrated and mid.
"Gamers!" is my definition of junk food anime- I really did not enjoy the love pentagon they all managed to get stuck into BUT i did love the actual fighting game footage they had from time to time which led me to enjoying Hi-Score Girl, who i personally believed handled both video game referencing and romance better than Gamers! did
I totally get it. There is so much great trash anime out there. The kind of stuff serious faults or lacking in substance, but yet I still watch, because of the good aspects or guilty pleasures. Sometimes I kinda feel like I wasted my time after watching trash anime, but most of the time I am thoroughly entertained. While tropes are unoriginal and not that interesting, they do provide a nice sense of familiarity.
Anime is a form of entertainment, regardless of its quality, if you enjoy watching it then it's good entertainment for you. There's nothing wrong with that and people need to stop trying to say that if you praise "fun mediocre show" and not "artistic masterpiece" then your opinions are weird and bad. Last season, Reign of the Seven Spellblades aired, and while the MAL user score is kind of the definition of "mid" right now (ack, 6.64 at least it's gone up from the 6.39 it was a few weeks ago) but I had a LOT of fun watching it (and think people were being just a bit harsh + it needs 6 episodes to get rolling) so in my opinion it was a good watch. It piqued my interest and all the things that it did well meshed with what I wanted out of a show. Also damn throwing shade at Liar Liar like that, I watched it because there will never be a second season of No Game No Life (I am too lazy to read ad I need to get past that) and I had a craving and then got thrown to my feet when it was roughly the same premise on a much more grounded scale but absolutely not the same execution of it and it was definitely a guilty pleasure show for me more than anything. I've gotten good at browsing through the thick of mediocre shows to pick out precisely which ones I'm confident I will enjoy watching even if they rate lower than a 7 by the community. It's a really nice thing to have because shows that are critically acclaimed across the board that scratch specific itches are far and few between and you won't be finding one of those every season, so being able to browse through dozens upon dozens of generic or average shows and pick out the 2 or 3 pieces of mediocrity that will surely entertain you is a handy skill while waiting for the next large show. How is MHA on Season 7 scheduled for who the hell knows when
I'm losing my mind at everyone's videos in the fake recommended getting millions of views and then Allen just using the actual view count for his video lmao
I can tell the outcome of any harem rom com from chapter one, but I still eat that shit up. I also unashamedly look forward to and watch every new season of my hero academia, I am sorry
For me it's the opposite, I've watched so many mid anime back to back that I can't stand them anymore, I've been watching some good anime lately and it's so good, although it's kinda sad when they end...
Mid? Probably Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor (RokuAka) cuz I am a sucker for non game mechanics magic systems! (Game magic systems are nice in a… game! Not in a show thank you! Unless it’s necessary to the plot I don’t need yet another one) also I like shows that can pop out a good teacher! Lol the side characters were also enjoyable and not flat so that’s something… do I want a second season just to see what happens? Yeah is it something I will revolve my world around? Not really!
The show itself wasn't really memorable, but the one scene where the professor lectures his students on how to use lighting bolt by dissecting the concept of magic itself is something I found myself going back to time and time again. It perfectly captures that feeling of discovery and delight when a concept just suddenly makes sense and its applications become limitless.
@@hllw1249 YES!!! That’s what originally got me into watching the show! It gives you a feeling of being understood when a teacher can simplify a concept that otherwise would be too technical to understand for someone like myself! If only all my teachers worked like that I’d not struggle as much back in school
“-the bits of Monogatari I’ve seen” hurt my soul. As a fan of Katanagatari and Shaft as well as stuff like Hyouka, you *need* to actually watch Monogatari some day.
Yeah And he doesn't even provide ANY argument as to why Liar liar and Nisekoi is " mid ", he just says : " I don't like the characters!! " Same with other shows he calls mid, he never provides any argument lol
uughhh yeah liar liar is so bad >.> Had to drop it. My fav mid anime is probably something like Grimgar? I'm not entirely sure but there's a lot to dislike about the show yet it managed to impress me.
i don't understand why you showed clips of Quintessential Quintuplets when defining mid anime, it's a really good harem that does not rely on fanservice to sell itself
I have pretty bad ADHD, so I actually PREFER watching 5/6/7 as opposed to 8/9/10 because then I don't have to have my eyes glued to the screen and take in every pixel for analysis.
For me, a mid show is worse than a bad one. A bad show you can react to and make your own fun, but with a show that's just good enough to escape mediocrity, you can't help but be even more disappointed at how it squandered its few interesting aspects.
Sour cream and onion chips dipped in yogurt
hey what happened to the steins;gate video series you started a long time ago?
Fire Force also gets really creative with unique powers given that everyone’s ability boils down to “controls fire”
TLDR, if a show does a lot of things well it can be difficult to truly understand your tastes or how the specific elements work on their own. In mid-tier shows that only do one or two things well it's much easier to "isolate" key components by seeing what can - and cannot - carry a story on its own.
He appears, he admits, he says the truth about the midocrity of MHA and Demon Salyer, he is gone again
It's literally just false. Poor reading comprehension
Ah yes, the "I'm not interested but maybe this time you'll get me back" strategy. It works 100% of the time 60% of the time.
Demon Slayer is peak man, you gotta engage with the work instead of only watching shows for your instant gratification and 'raw' action
Such philosophical bravery, amen replay, I too enjoy some mid
Hell yeah
I too still intentionally procrastinate from watching some "materpiece" series.
Before I watch one, I always have this feeling that I'm obligated to enjoy it because everybody else does.
Mid anime is just easier to watch. I'm surprised how often these mid anime actually entertained me, even if it's just barely.
“You can only watch it for the first time once” is the thought that plagues me and causes the same issue. If I’m not in the perfect headspace I could ruin this great one time experience. Oh how to care less so I can enjoy more
@@niyamitchell6818 Same, I'm holding back on a bunch of supposedly great anime for that exact reason :´)
HE IS BACK!!!!!!!!
Sometimes, you just have to ask yourself if you're taking anime too seriously or if you've been watching too much of it
People also generally hate things that resemble themselves, which is probably why they dislike mid anime
wdym they dislike something that resembles themselves? i dont get how a show resembles a person lol
I disagree, usually people like things that resembles themselves
@@Gadottinho that are positive....
Go watch Watamotte.. and see if you can withstand it.
My fav "mid" anime i recall enjoying are Parallel world Pharmacy and More Than Lovers but Not A Married Couple ! lol I like what I like. I think "mid" has become such a nothing word now and now just means bad to most people.
This was an awesome video! Thanks! :D
I still think about the term Narrative Junk Food every now and then. It helps me justify whatever trash I'm watching at the time lmao
Hey glad my seminal theory in which I attempted to defend reading all of Domestic Girlfriend still has legs.
Arifureta is a MASTERPIECE!!! I'll meet anyone who disagrees at those coordinates! 🤣
Was not expecting to see a nod to Nisekoi. You are absolutely right. The Shaft animation and OST are an absolute treat to experience.
Also, super random question: have you ever checked out Bloom into You?
i am a sucker for mid romance specifically. it doesnt matter how many versions of the same carbon copy show i watch i always end up enjoying myself. and its hard to top the feeling you get when a mid romance / show becomes something great like quints or tomozaki.
also i regret to inform you i watched liar liar
also the transition at 8:49 between the aspect ratios was clean af
The problem i have with mid is that I already watched too much if it... AND IT WONT STOP COMING
I'm tired but I can't run from it
Joke's on you, I got into Fire Force because Tamaki is hot lmao
As a creative I am more often inspired by the seeds of a great idea executed messily than that of a decent idea fully realized
Some mid anime just have a really cosy vibe too. They're forgetable but while they are on, they can sort of whisk you away to a state of calm
Genuinely, this is my favorite video of yours, Replay. I would adore more looks into shows that you find within the mid-spectrum!
when you're watching anime seasonally in significant quantities (10+ shows), mid comes with the territory, and you can't always know something will be mid. and sometimes you have to give mid a chance to become more.
I came off the back of the Frieren video, thinking "I'm glad that after all these years, he's still doing well."
And I've recommended the show (and your video) to others, hoping that people will grow to have a healthier relationship towards the past.
How dare you call Isekai Smartphone mid! In this essay I will-
1:09
I actually found isekai smartphone so hilariously mid that I read basically all of the light novel and now I have a sunk cost fallacy combined with Stockholm Syndrome. After a while, it starts getting half-decent, I swear... it only takes 300 chapters for the MC to get crumbs of a personality...
i agree with this SO. HARD. i only discovered this recently when, a couple of seasons ago, i had a sudden desperate CRAVING to just binge through something mid. So, I watched Saihate no Paladin. (and I'm watching s2 this season!)
I had never had such a strong desire for mid anime before, and i realized it was for 2 reasons: 1) to make me feel even more adoration towards incredible shows, and 2) to renew my appreciation for anime in general.
A fellow 'Inspect element' enjoyer, very nice 👌
In any case, any Replay Value upload is the mark of a good day, keep em coming
I see We Never Learn is included in that montage and I feel attacked af xD
My favorite mid anime is Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits. It's not gonna win any awards, but it's comfy, cozy, the plot is low-stakes, and I get a lot of fulfillment out of using a show as a springboard to ask, "How would I tweak the direction as a writer?" Sometimes I'll pause a show in the middle of a scene to go, "Okay, I see what they're setting up here, but how would I proceed given what's happened so far?" and then see how close or far off I was.
Damn, the video's editing is 🤩
Started watching anime back in 2012, when SAO first came out and it was all the hype.
Variety is the spice of life, helps put everything into perspective and just let's you try new things
Either that or Ben-to, i just had so much fun with the hijinks and fights in the show
Another benefit is that being at least familiar with low and mid tier shows gives you more of an appreciation for the truly high tier ones.
Have you tried Toaru at all? The setting and world building around academy city got me so hooked. It’s amongst my favorites now
Another reason I find for watching mediocre seasonal anime is that sometimes there's anime out there that I personally find really fun, but you'd never see anyone recommending them even when they aired. Stuff like Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department, Gal to Kyouryuu, etc that I personally like, but that never got much attention. Had I not watched them as they aired, I think its likely that I never would have stumbled upon them.
YES!!!! Oh, how I’ve missed you. And I love Mid anime.
The coordinates point to Liar Lake in Georgia (US) for anyone who's interested
I am more of a fan of Nisekoi than 3-Gatsu no Lion and the Monogatari series, and I am proud of it
Tsugumi Best Girl
I like your definition of MID. I don't agree with it myself, but I like it.
I don't consider 'narrative junkfood' to be mid, mostly because of how long I have been watching anime and how much varied anime I have seen. I consider Cowboy Bepop to be "narrative junkfood" however, there is absolutely no way I would call it a "mid" show. Even when it released in 2001, I would have considered it "narrative junkfood". But this stems from my age, my experiences watching anime, viewing TV and movies and reading books or short stories.
Revisit the concept in a decade or two. ;>
Man, Fena could've been so much more. Those first few episodes were fantastic.

Should've been clear - the editor got to pick whatever they liked for a bunch of this haha
i was curious enough to go onto google maps and roam the world looking for the co-ordinates on screen
fortunately, it only took 10 minutes
would've been much longer to figure out how to use real co-ordinates
but for the sake of ease, it points to somewhere called liar lake
Proud of you haha!
@@zellbi
thanks lol
For some reason this Video made me think of Hitsugi no Chaika. Probably fits the Bill best for the theme. It was nicely adapted got through it's source material and was generally fine. Still I think the World building had to offer so much more...
I'm a fan of not only including "Mid" Anime in my watch list. If I don't suffer through a bad one every now and than, I think I would lose my appreciation of the medium as a whole.
Probably chivalry of a failed knight not because it has most of the stuff I look for but because it has some things I remember liking.
already know its gonna be a banger video
Hey, nothing wrong with mid anime. Just to enjoy it. I do so sometimes(nah most of the times, I like mid anime).
PRINCE OF STRIDE!!!!! LETSSSSSSS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT ONE!
Thanks for making this video now I have the perfect excuse to justify watching isekais
I don't get why mid means bad nowadays...
Reddit
Frieren, zom 100, apothecary diaries are some of the best anime from last and this year. But i have watched crap like: my guard dog, my daughter returned an s class adventurer etc but i think it needs to be there.. i mean how else will you diferentiate between good or bad. OMG AKUDAMA DRIVE was really good
The soul's gotta have good mid sometimes
I really love Nisekoi because of how the show looks and for some funny moments but I always felt guilty about loving it because the characters are boring and the story is pure BS so thank you for validsting my point
Akudama drive is actually a gem. It has a fair bit of meat which was pretty fun to dig into. The show made me accidentally write an essay for fun. Will never forgive it for that.
Yo get this editor back up here this shit hot enough to melt steel beams ong💯😤🤤
Seeing Kuromukuro in the thumbnail as an example of a "Mid" anime hurts, given how much I remember enjoying it. It is mid, though and that's totally fine. I wish it were loved enough to have a translation of the sequel novel. The OPs and EDs rock.
I almost always say favorite anime is Tari Tari, since it's a lesser known show that really stuck with me. I don't know if it qualifies as Mid, because I think it is a really solid show. I have a hard time differentiating between underrated and mid.
"Gamers!" is my definition of junk food anime- I really did not enjoy the love pentagon they all managed to get stuck into BUT i did love the actual fighting game footage they had from time to time which led me to enjoying Hi-Score Girl, who i personally believed handled both video game referencing and romance better than Gamers! did
My favourite kind of anime
we have exactly the same style of animanga consumption lmao
Also the best mid anime is SAO
You won't
Every pay per view fight needs an opening and mid card.
I can tell the outcome of any harem rom com from chapter one, but I still eat that shit up. I also unashamedly look forward to and watch every new season of my hero academia, I am sorry
I enjoyed Great Pretender but not nearly as much as I did Liar Liar.
Holy shit, Back Arrow. That show is a 10/10 experience. Turn your brain off and watch the shitshow unfold.
My problem with this video is that you seem to be imply that if the show isn't pretentious ass sniffing then that makes it mid.
Yeah
And he doesn't even provide ANY argument as to why Liar liar and Nisekoi is " mid ", he just says : " I don't like the characters!! "
Same with other shows he calls mid, he never provides any argument lol
uughhh yeah liar liar is so bad >.> Had to drop it.
Manga is great, first season of the anime though?...preeeeeeettttyyyyy dang mid.
@@ReplayValue yeah, the visual and animation quality of the first season wasn't great
Not here for the liar liar slander😒 Absolutely here for everything else🥲
He never even gave any arguments against it, he just said " don't watch this show!! " And moved on like the clown he is
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko is mid, but to me it's a really good comfort watch. Especially the first four episodes of season 1.
Kosaki best girl = instant like
one of us, one of us
But the tomboy, objectively, is the reason to watch the show
Robotics;Notes is my favourite 'mid' anime
Did i see a clip of Yurucamp in a montage of 'mid' animes?! :(
How can you talk sooo fast😂. It is an amazing skill. 3:18
My top three anime:
Highschool DxD
Bleach
Neon Genesis
I have pretty bad ADHD, so I actually PREFER watching 5/6/7 as opposed to 8/9/10 because then I don't have to have my eyes glued to the screen and take in every pixel for analysis.
For me, a mid show is worse than a bad one. A bad show you can react to and make your own fun, but with a show that's just good enough to escape mediocrity, you can't help but be even more disappointed at how it squandered its few interesting aspects.
Mine are probably Fire Force or Food Wars
Please cover, *your lie in april*
