- *Note* This video was created as a "temp" fix as the permanent solution is to replace the transmission shift link cable. However, if you follow these steps it will address your problem. Please contact a professional if you are not skilled in this field.
This video, we will cover how to resolve your gear shift issue on the First GEN Acura MDX (2000-2006).
For this particular vehicle, I thought the transmission may be giving as it was hard to put the car in gear from P, N, D5, D3 etc. I would have to use a great amount of force to get it in gear. Once it was in gear, it seems that the transmission would slip.
I was able to resolve the issue within 15 minutes and cost me only $20 bucks!
Items used:
- Car jack

Note that the shift linkage is in a different location on the 2002 MDX. It is located under the vehicle. Follow shift cable to transmission and there is a cover with 5, 14mm bolts. Undue those bolts and spray linkage, etc. as shown in video. Easy no cost repair! Love it.
Thanks!
THANKS
Worked perfectly to fix my 05 MDX with only 218,000 miles on it!
You rock!!!
Thanks! Fixed my 2004 Acura. I was able to put it on my little car ramps, lay on my back, and spray the linkage without taking the tire off, etc. Saved the day!
@@danhenderson7457 Good deal Dan, I’m glad this video was able to get your vehicle back on the road and to save on a repair bill.
Thanks
My 2003 MDX was stuck in 'Park' in my driveway. I was sure I would have to get towed. While I thought it was just the linkage, I had no idea where to look. Your video was GREAT!! In less than an hour, I had it shifting smoothly. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
No problem and keep it lube to prevent it from reoccurring.
Great video! Just canceled my appointment with Acura dealership. Thanks
Good stuff, glad I was able to help you out. Please share.
Fantastic video, clear and concise. Worked perfectly, I didn't even need to take off the tire.
Thank you for making this video. I just finished doing it, and it shifts really smoothly. Never would have known about PB Blaster if it weren't for your video.
Very much appreciated
No problem.

Please share to help other MDX owners know of this potential issue which I'm sure many dealerships will save you need a transmission.
Thanks

Amir Parniani Hello did you need to remove the front tire to get behind the panel?
Hey you rock for posting this man👊, I'm gonna do this tomorrow, I've been having this EXACT issue for a while
Glad this video has been helpful to you. Keep me posted thanks.
Omg I have to try this today. My truck has been sitting for 2months, huge storm this weekend. I went to start it up to take it to the gas station 😣 Oh Boy its so stiff I have to use Both hands. Soon as I apply it. I'll send the praise 😊
Thanks SO much! It took about half a can of PB Blaster and it didn't free up completely until I left it overnight, but it shifts like new again. Much appreciated!!!
Thanks man this was very helpful I have an MDX that sat for about a year and it would hardly shift out of park thanks again
Thank you! Perfect fix, had to do it again about 3 years later as well.
Good deal. As long as you keep it lubed, you should be fine.
thanks this was very helpful for me for my MDX if it won't shift thanks again
Thank you seems like the problem I'm having. Gotta give it a try.
Give it a try, it's worth a shot and will cut the repair bill.
It works! Thanks for the easy instructions.
No problem, I am glad this video was helpful to you.

Thank you very much my BMO brother ...I was born and raised there...Ivanhoe Ave...Northern High back in the days of the Northern Vikings....then USAF and UMD college Park

Thank you bro i am resolving my problems in my car
No problem.
Had the same problem and it work for me. Thanks
No problem Edd, glad this video helped you.
Dude thank you!
No problem...
Great explanation. Have you covered a noisy park 2 reverse or neutral 2 d1 shift?
Usually when the gear shifter is noisy, I would take the center console apart and clean any debris that might got caught in the inside.
It's very helpful for me. I have the same issue now. Appreciate it.
No problem, please feel free to share this video.
Thanks
I have a 2001 Acura MDX .been driving it 5yrs no problem.now some times wen I'm on the gas it doesn't wanna go at all.i have to put it in park and hopes it will move please help me could it be my transmission is going out.. desperate for answers
Hello Anitra,
You should leave from the gas pedal when your MDX doesn't move. When the engineer speed drops down to bottom. You immediately step on pedal softly. Your car will move. If it doesn't work. Repeat it. Do not suddenly step hardly on your gas pedal or your car will still freeze or suddenly rush. The issues often happen in winter (cold weather) & in the beginning when you drive your car (say 5 minutes). The MDX transmission (first generation 2001-2006) has this issue. You should drive be carefully in the beginning 5 minutes when you start your car. The issue will gone when you drive long time on the way.I don't know the reason maybe the car warm up. You can try your car on empty ground field and you will learn your car. It will help you drive safely. By the way, when you start drive your car. Step on the brake and release it, repeat it. It will avoid the issue happen when you drive on the road especially stop for turn or stop for red light. It is less dangerous when you start drive your car than on the road when the issue happens. Good luck.
thank you .I thought this was the issue bcuz I wasn't letting it warm up enough.lately I've been warming it up for 15 mins..this issue comes and go like when I'm at a red light and step on the gas to go it want and in about 2secs it'll catch and I'm able to go.im wondering if it's my transmission going out or what is the issue.im a single mom and I can't afford to buy a new car I love my MDX.i hope this is a minor problem tht can be fixed
Hi Anitra,
I think the reason comes from transmission. But if you drive defensively, it will be OK. Usually, the issue comes in the first or second stop. So if you stop and go in the beginning, it will decrease the chance the issues happen again. If it happens, check the engineer speed panel. When it back to left bottom (say 1x1000), step on the gas pedal immediately. You can do it within 3 seconds. If you are family with the situation, you will drive as normal. Take care.
thank you now I know how to fix my mdx
Good info bro...stay making these videos...
Thanks, will do!
Thanks, for this video. I had the same issue. I don't drive my MDX often, so when it sits, it gets sticky. but I did what you recommended, and it works! I was just about to take it to the deale.r I'm glad I didn't do that!
My 2004 MDX started to intermittently start and playing with the shifter would allow me to start the truck. But last week I had to start manually release the shift lock to get the shifter to neutral. Then I could turn the engine over I followed your video and 30 min later I was done. Even putting back the three
Jacks and other stuff
Thanks for posting, It has helped save my sons inheritance fun
Good deal!
Great video it is really useful
Awesome! Thank you for posting. Have you got any videos on why I have no air coming out of dash vents or defrosters?
Hi, this is outstanding!! Thank you. Do you know if this area can be reached by crawling under? Anything without removing the tire? Please and thank you.
You'll find it more beneficial to remove the tire for this process. However you could attempt to do this without the tire off but it will be a tight squeeze.
Thank you my friend
@Phillip J. M. Try removing the battery and the battery plastic plate. You can see from the side and spray. I did and it worked for me
Thanks for the video will be doing it tomorrow
Great video thanks
This worked perfectly!
Excellent video.....can't thank you enough!
Hi Bmore, I can't tell from the video, but do I need to remove the tire to access the shift linkage? Do you have any video footage of how to remove the wheel panel?
Yes you should remove the driver side wheel and wheel well panel.
Can anyone please help me do it I will pay you
Thanks a BILLION times...just fixed mine yesterday after two months of Horror not being able to shift the gear...Any idea about the CLUNKING front end noise when i drive over bumps or uneven road...It started right after the original struts were replaced.
No problem and I experienced the same issue driving over bumps that cause the front end to bounce with clunking noise.
Once I replaced the struts and springs the issue went away.
Thanks
very good video. Well done. Can not thank you enough.
Thank you sir, I am glad that this video has helped you.
I have a question does the shift lock effect the vsa , horn and brake light relay?
The VSA, Brake Light is usually due to and issue with the ABS system. I would first connect a obd2 scanner tool to check your vehicle for any check engine/pending service codes. Also inspect your fuses and then check your wheel speed sensors to ensure they are clean.
If your having an issue with the horn, please be sure to check the fuse.
Hi , I have a gen 1 that blinks D5 when in park. If it sits for a while It takes about 10 mins for the car to go into drive. What do you think is the problem
Based on your description, that sounds like your transmission fluid and filter is dirty/old and needs to be changed. The transmission filter sits on top of the transmission and is very common that owners may forget to change it when changing the transmission fluid.
You'll often see that when the weather changes, your transmission may tend to respond differently because of the outside temps especially with dirty fluid and filter.
@@AWordFromMrJones I had the fluid changed today. It was Barely any in there. It’s a lot smoother but it still gets stuck in park after sitting. I will do the filter tomorrow.
@@2020Dreamlife Yeah the transmission filter keeps a lot of that junk so changing it will help. Also adding some SeaFoam Trans Tune will help recondition the transmission gears. You will see results after about 2 weeks.
03 MDX 355k mi- thank you so much, I thought it was going to the graveyard but now it's been resuscitated. Shift linkage feels like butter almost thought it was broke :-)
Ty so much this video is so helpful god bless and ty
my 2006 mdx is moving slowly upon cant move as usual
You should probably make your intro and outro music louder..
Did u get any delay in gear shift what happened with my transmission when I shift to d its take like 6 seconds to go forward
Hmm, there was no delay when the transmission would shift. But there was significant delay to manually shift the gear "shifter".
For your issue, I would look into changing out the transmission fluid and filter. There's this after market gear fluid that is known to help transmission/gear issues but I cannot recall the name. It's worth a shop before replacing the transmission. Hope your able to find a solution. 💯
can we reach this by removing the battery and the battery compartment and go from the top? possible?
from the comments section, others have done it. i did his method since i already have jack and jack stands...
I got this problem!
It's a pain but this will help. It's going on year 2019 and this MDX is still shifting smooth....
I have a 2002 and looks totally different when hi take off the splash guards
The sift cable on the driver side should be somewhat identical for Acura MDX 2000-2006. If you see the shift linkage cable, just spray some lube, run through the gears and you should be fine.
would this work for a 1991 honda accord ?
Hello what year is your Acura
This was 2004 Acura MDX.
same hire but today I park my car and the car like move back little bit I have to put the emergency brakes I started the car again and I park it ok... but I don't know if I'll be the transmission because I rebuild it a year ago
Can you shift through gears (move shifter)?
yes it's hard but I can shift but I'll do what you show on the video tomorrow and I'll let u know
Sounds good.
My plastic black piece is missing car drives but when I put it in park it just keeps rolling even with car off help please
It sounds like the shift linkage is not securely engaging. I would pull the wheel well cover off, have someone put their foot on the brake and cycle through the gears while you look at the shift linkage. Apply the same process as seen in this video to see if that will help.
What’s the one you clean for it?w40?
pb blaster to penetrate the corrosion. you can leave it there and just follow up with anti-seize compound. but, if you want to clean it out ~ brake cleaner is the chemical you want to use
What kind of car you have
This was on a 2004 MDX.
What switch is this?
Shift linkage.
@@AWordFromMrJones thanks
@@m60pho64 No problem.
Thank you so much! I was able to fix my 2005 MDX quickly! BLESS YOU! 278K miles and going!
i was going to buy a 2004 Acura MDX, but i saw this and i was doubting, it's a one owner, elderly guy, very nice, with 153956 miles, i test drove it a couple days ago, and it was smooth as butter, went threw all the gears like it was nothing. now i'm worried.
