    Excellent resource. Very simple and not too much talking. Nice to hear an Australian voice as well. Thanks for making this public. I’m a clinician in Adelaide and will be directing my clients this recording.

    My psychologist recommended I listen this. I have moderate depression from being a care giver. But I don’t understand what’s going on? Can someone explain? Thank you

      Thank you for your comment. I hope you found the meditation helpful.
      I hope that your psychologist will be able to explain how the experience of being a caregiver has impacted on your mood and depression as part of their therapy with you. Meditations like Leaves on a Stream can help build up our skills to navigate life’s stressors so I hope they over time may be of assistance.
      Wishing you all the best with your mental wellbeing and health!

      @@wellmindbodypsychology that’s the thing, I don’t understand how it helps? Or am I doing it wrongly

      @@allergy4000 Hello, we are very aware that the specifics of how the following relates to your situation will be best explored further with your individual health practitioner/psychologist and also as we cannot know the exact reason why they recommended these meditations in your case.
      Broadly speaking though The Leaves on a Stream meditation practice is helping us build the skill of defusion, where we can “watch" our thoughts and not feel as “fused” with them. When we are able to defuse from our thoughts, and watch them, then we can realise that we are not our thoughts (or emotions, or physical sensations etc), and during those moments we can find moments of choice - choice potentially related to how we react and respond to something, or choice regarding what behaviours and actions we follow.
      There can be a lot more to explore with this, and therefore also a need to make this specific to your life and situations, however, in general this meditation is a very valuable skill that when practiced over time can help us feel more centred and less impacted by our thoughts and feelings etc.
      Hope this helps, and also if you would like to find further information about this - there is plenty of wonderful information explaining the mechanisms of defusion and mindfulness mediation.
      This meditation is also part of the Acceptance & Commitment Therapy approach, so this can also be something to search for and read more about.
      All the best

    This meditation tires my eyes due to imagination involved. Is this really called meditation or hypnosis?

    • @wellmindbodypsychology
      @wellmindbodypsychology  Год назад +2

      Hi Dilip, thank you for giving the leaves on a stream a go, it is definitely one that uses more of our ability to imagine and sustain an image and utilise for the purpose of practising defusion (the skill of observing our thoughts in this instance) and so I wonder whether when your eyes start to feel tired it may still be of benefit for you to come back to focusing on breath, and then potentially return to the image of the stream and the leaves etc when feeling able? This exercise is within the mindfulness meditation exercises used in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, as the core skills practiced are bringing awareness and then defusing from the thoughts we are observing. With hypnosis, which I will confirm I am not trained in, my understanding is the key is to first enter into a state of relaxation, at which time any imagery or memory that is brought to mind is then altered through the words spoke to us and potentially a new experience or image is also brought to mind. That is definitely not the aim of this exercise, and in fact people may at times not feel relaxed when doing mindfulness meditation practice.
