Nice catch of the Metra F59PH-3 at the end of the video. They two units do look real nice in their new paint! Thank you for including the other Metra and Amtrak trains that you saw at Rondout! Keep the videos coming when you have time from your other obligations.
They’re actually regular F59PHs. A Tier 4 version of the F59PH for Northstar will have a new horn, new ditch lights, a new headlight, a new bell, as well as square marker lights. Northstar is buying 8 ex-Metrolink F59PHs so that they can be rebuilt and repainted into Northstar colours by NS's Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This will be a 3-year overhaul being done to them. When I go to Cresson Steel in the future, I’ll see the 'junk' cabs of F59PHs, MP36PH-3Cs, SD70s, C40-9s, and even SD9043MACs as well that are stored awaiting to be scrapped. Yes, SCAX #855 has been wrecked in a 2008 collision and scrapped, and won’t be added to the rebuild at all. Will it be true and was 855 the only engine of that Metrolink train on that collision day?
There will be a Tier 4 variant of the F59PH that is coming soon to Northstar Commuter by 2024. Northstar has purchased 8 F59PHs from Metrolink and they’re being rebuilt and repainted by Norfolk Southern's Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This 3-year rebuilding program allows NS to cut the old cab off the car-body for it to be taken to Cresson Steel to become a 'junk' cab, and strip down the rest of the body for a new body to be built with a yellow and blue paint scheme with Northstar lettering. Metrolink retired it’s entire fleet of F59PHs in 2021 in favour of EMD F125 locomotives. After 855 was wrecked in the Chatsworth train collision in 2008, several F59s would be withdrawn starting in 2018. Northstar in Minneapolis, Minnesota, purchased 8 F59PHs from Metrolink for revenue service on commuter trains. But before this happens, they have to be taken to Altoona, Pennsylvania, to be rebuilt at the Juniata Shops by NS, who will first take the original cab off the car-body and take it to Cresson Steel where the Metrolink F59 cabs are stored. Then the rest of the body without the cab will be stripped down with the head end power generator upgraded to a higher number, and several years later they’ll have a new cab with square-shaped marker lights on the nose as well as ditch lights on the top of the front of the frame above the snow plow of the locomotive. With many of the Metrolink cabs now stored at Cresson Steel awaiting the scrapper's torch along with some SD9043MAC, C40-9, and SD70 cabs from freight locomotives, the new cab with the new bell and new flashing ditch lights and new headlight will be placed onto the new car-body and eventually they’ll all be repainted into the blue and yellow Northstar livery and numbered 300 - 307 when on Northstar Commuter Rail. The first Tier 4 F59PH rebuild will make it to Minnesota for Northstar by mid-2024 when completed by NS. The F59PH rebuilds will be another type of locomotive that runs on Northstar, as they only had MP36PH-3s before, but now they bought 8 F59PHs from Metrolink and Altoona Works is finally rebuilding them into Tier 4 and repainting them! Altoona Works is also gonna rebuild all of Metrolink’s MP36PH-3s into MP40PH-3Cs at Juniata as well, but just like the F59s that are being rebuilt for Northstar, the old cab will also have to be taken off the body to be taken to the Cresson Steel scrapyard for storage. The rebuild of old Metrolink engines of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) is taking place soon, but is it true to happen?
