It sucks that after the monster tour ended, REM only played shows overseas. Long time REM fans in the states missed out on a lot of great live performances, like this. If I saw them play this song live I’d cry for the rest of the night.
They picked fine replacements for Bill with both Waronker and Rieflin. Love the haunting backing vocals reminiscent of the studio version. I too like the use of organ which I'll say is a pretty obvious choice.
Yes, Find the River! Good advice! Oh wait, the River near me has Alligators 🐊 and tons of mosquitoes 🦟 and red tide Bacteria 🦠 so I think I’ll avoid the River instead.
It's so difficult lyrics for me, as not native English speaker. But this is one of the most favorite songs by R.E.M., such as Losing My Religion, Nightswimming, Immitation of Life and It Happened Today.
Was there too. What a night that was! The crowd was really going crazy. There was so much expectation as we had been waiting so long for REM to play in Switzerland (the last Swiss show before that had been the one from 1995 in nearby Lausanne, when the drummer had the medical emergency…)
Take me back to the 90,s
None of this is going my way...Spent the summer of 99 in Switzerland, listened to this song a lot

The ocean is the river's goal,
A need to leave the water knows
When you know you know
Best Song from R.E.M. Fantastic!!!!!!!!
une voix si apaisante...🙌
Mike Mills backing vocals are amazing
I loved this quite a bit.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
Amen
Facts
This is quite underrated.
no, no its not.
So loved by every REM fan!
Hahahah no its not. Jeez.
Thanks so much for this!
1 of the best songs of all time, though I don't think it entered the top 50 in the singles charts over here.
delboy20091 it was the sixth single iirc.
Even Nightswimming before it did very little in terms of figures in the singles chart.

Magical song that touches my soul.
Sends chills down my spine!
One of the best songs!
Everything about it, lyrics, music and of course that voice.
one of my all time favorite rem songs.
My god, Michael Stipe’s voice. What a gift.
I was there that night. Great tour. Saw them 5 nights in 6 days throughout Europe. Never forget.

This is a deeply spiritual song; you can see Stipe is in another place altogether at 2:05
Peter & Mike's backing vocals sound like they have stomach pains.
but it works.
Ken and Mike's, you mean.
Stupenda, mi fa stare bene 😊. Mi mette pace l'anima e i pensieri...
Show this to anyone who says REM weren't great live...
This song should be sung in every church or worship service.
Peter Buck changed the guitar again. :-) Now I have yet another 'official' version to play. The organ sounds sort of out of tune for some reason.
Ok thought that was just me. Sounds off for sure.
