    / @tested
    Questions answered in this video:
    * I'm curious what three movies you'd recommend for some quarantine-binging that inspired your special effects style, cosplay style, or prop collection "theme" that might offer me some inspiration too?
    * What are the best insights you've learned from fields you weren't initially familiar with?
    * Do you and your family play board games? If so, which do you like best?
    * Do you ever lose anything in your shop? How do you go about finding it?
    * How do you handle the desire to focus on a new skill or discipline without continually ignoring the other areas of making?
    * How critical is your internal monologue? Do you curse a lot when things inevitably go wrong?
    * Would you consider an episode on sharpening tools and why it’s important?
    * Who was your most influential teacher?
    * If you could have one MythBusters event/myth immortalized in a Lego set, which one would it be?
    * Do you ever just chill out in your shop?
    * What tool or tools do people often overspend on? What cheap version is just fine?
    * Are you still getting out on your OneWheel between builds during this craziness?

      I work as a stage hand, and your comment about the Truck metric for tours is one hundred percent true. As soon as we know how many, and how big the trucks are its really all we need to know what we are in for. What it is they have in the trucks makes a difference too but not as much.

    • @TwoGunToast
      @TwoGunToast 3 года назад +2

      Also feel like 186 is a massive stretch for one band to have to set up for every show, maybe throughout the whole tour they used s total of that many trucks? Weve done festivals with four stages, half a mile worth of barricade, stands, plus all the equipment for FoH, lighting, etc and that wasnt even 25 trucks.

      24:38 What about an episode on tool maintenance in general? I find that though it takes up a good chunk of my time, simply maintaining (and often improving, like replacing a lubricating oil with white lithium grease) is very rewarding.

      I used to do this, but most of the time I would end up with two things that I need that I can't find... The better way is to turn off the lights, put a flashlight on the floor, beam parallel to the floor, and look for a shadow as you scan it around. (I work with a lot of little tiny things, and floors in labs for SOME EVIL REASON are specifically designed to hide dirt, and electron microscope samples that you've been working on for a month)

      Ok so no joke I had to say something when my son was born 5 years ago, my grandma always told me to tell my son "There's ALWAYS more to learn" and I've hammered it into his vocabulary and mind just as I did for me, and he made me so proud when one day he was trying to take apart his rocket toy and was having trouble, I offered to help and he told me "don't worry daddy, I'll figure it out so I can learn to do it again by myself". In Annapolis, a naval academy cadet said If you don't know about someone, don't Bullsh*t it. Admit you don't know, then go look for the answer.

    • @SenselessUsername
      @SenselessUsername 3 года назад +5

      Yes. And he knows his limits... Both the "sharpening" and "board games" questions are answered correctly here --- people trust Adam for everything, so there's this pressure to become a one-stop-shop for all knowledge and wisdom. Which is foolish, but a pressure; enough celebrities lose this perspective; after ---say--- being on a reality TV show, suddenly they assume their opinion on child rearing or international politics matters more than that of the next random person.

    • @RealTwiner
      @RealTwiner 3 года назад +2

      @@SenselessUsername honestly, I think the fact that he has apprehension about it shows that he knows enough to know he doesn't know it all. While I personally have no interest in such a video, I think he'd be able to make a pretty great analytical video on the things he's learned and what things he's felt helped him improve and just break down the information that ended up having value.
      If he didn't come at it form a perspective of, this is how you do it, but these are things that he's considered in trying to become better at it.

    Thank you Adam. I learn a lot from watching your videos. You are a amazing Craftsman. I am a blacksmith/Stainless by trade, and I have met many, who thought of them self, as they were like, "gods gift to the tool shop" while they could not hammer a nail in straight without breaking both hammer and nail. One thing among many, you are always eager to learn new stuff, and teach others what you know. That is admirable I think. Keep up the awesome channel and it's content.

    I had a middle school science teacher who taught us that "I don't know" is a perfectly valid answer if you can't answer the question. The point of delineation is whether or not you are going to find the answer. I use that today when I train new techs at work. I may not always have the answer, but I will find it

    As a side job I build cat trees. This requires me to cut a LOT of carpet. I use a common Olfa knife with the breakaway blades. Except the blades get dull very quickly so I sharpen them using a two sided paddle I got from Princess Auto. Each side has a thin metal plate with diamond grit (one side more coarse than the other). I can make one of those blades last several months. Super cost effective. It just took a bit of time figuring out the best angle and method to do the sharpening.

    My dad is a jeweler (now retired) and started his business in our basement when we were kids. One day, a very expensive diamond flew out of his tweezers onto the floor and he never found it. I was too young to remember but apparently it was major drama and they spent ages looking for it with no luck. My parents divorced and my mother got the house and a majority of its contents. Years later when my mom's boyfriend moved in he was going to use the same basement room as his office space so they were going to put carpet in it and sure enough, they found that diamond wedged under the baseboard! Of course, everything in the house belonged to my mother, including that diamond. She now wears it in a nice pendant.

My granddad had a wood working shop in his garage/built on shed and this view you have here reminds me of it so much. I have a chronic illness that makes me reeaall clumsy.
    One of the habits I’ve formed is allowing myself a minute to be dramatic. Sometimes that means over the top groaning, sometimes it’s literally making up some on the spot “woe is me, for my life is filled with shards of glass and all who see tremble in fear” nonsense. Sometimes I have to just let it get to me and take a second to angry cry that I’m sick of this.
    Those moments add up and you are more important than any project or physical object.
    Kindness is it’s own skill and the training starts with ourselves.
    It’s much easier to stop centering the world around me “it’s not about me” when my brain isn’t caught in a self-guilt loop. The wheel stops squeaking when we stop to oil it.

    You just brought some flashbacks on real hard Mr Savage! I used to work in the factory that makes those POP Rivet guns... and I hated them!!! I've done the entire process on those from the pouring of the metal to the inspection of final product. Theres a small factory in Cambridge, NY, and they make those and the cups and the plates for them. They also made the sand cores for them. I worked the mold, bandsaw, belt sander, heat treat, and file finishing work and those things are labor intensive!!
    It shocked me to see you put that on the table! I shot up off the couch and took a snapshot of it just to say Adam savage is using a product I made. Seriously made my night seeing you with that tool, even if i hated each one.. no matter what model it is. They have 4 or 5 different ones that are made in that factory.

    One of the things that I learned while enlisted is that (at least at the junior level) you can make every single mistake exactly one time. Whenever I get mad at myself for making a big mistake, I bring that to mind. If this is the first time, I treat it as a learning opportunity and move on. If it is not the first time, then I let myself get mad because I deserve it.
