Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Tabletop Maker's Vise!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 мар 2021
- Adam adds a new vise to his workbench: a versatile Instrument Maker's Vise designed to grip flat or cylindrical workpieces at different precise angles. This vise is actually a kit from Hemingway, and putting it together becomes a machining adventure unto itself! But the journey is well worth it as Adam couldn't be happier with the finished kit and the machining lessons and experience he gained along this build!

What hapend to the velociraptor costume!?
Its lefty loosey righty tighty unless its a gas line
What's the story behind how Adam got involved with tested? I see that jamie and adam got introduced a few years into the channel existing.
Have you ever watched Dr.Stone? Imagine yourself being transported to the Stone Age. What would you make first?
Excellent work, looks really good!
Also, your excitement is contagious.
You really should wear a mask. ;)
And the man himself. Cheers!
ToT 😁
22:31 is more of a ThisOldTony shot - the picture/frame consists 50% of a-pair-of-talking-hands and 50% of steel. Now Clickspring´s shot would be 50% a-pair-of-aussie-talking-hands and 50% brass.
He also has a better, more expensive CNC vice. Easy to be happy that way.
After just going through quite some length on his vice, you did not in any way get into the shown usage of the Kurt barrel rifling press featured here?
Sharing with my daughter who’s recently immersed herself in a welding, machining, and fabrication trade. Thanks!
ask her what happend to velociraptor videos
Where did the velociraptor videos go????
for some reason there private
Adam I am 51 yes old, and watching you mill and work metal on your lathe. Takes me back to Jr High and High School metal shop. I swear I can smell the burning oil and metal thru my PC. Thank you sooo much 😁
What happened to All the Velociraptor One Day Build Videos? They're All Gone! I was going to rewatch them all but they all disappeared!
Moved to "Premium Content" maybe?
@@antraxxslingshots It's removed from the Playback History too.
I suggested the name change to the "One of many days builds".
I noticed the live streams become private too, so no re-watching what you've already seen there. Doh!
Did Animax get funny about oversharing trade secrets??
Adam watches all the same youtubers I do, AvE, Clickspring, ToT, etc. That makes me very happy!
The thisoldtony reference made me smile too. Does Adam appreciate the dad jokes too or just the machining content? Pretty sure the jokes are like 70% of why I watch. I'm a woodworker.
I'm only surprised he hasn't mentioned KRucker yet, if you like AvE, Clickspring and ToT then surely?
@@grantdeterman1987 tot is that good my GF plays it with me
Milling with a twist drill? ...I don't think he's actually watching
Who does NOT watch ToT???
Adam keeps me company when I struggle to sleep. Being a person who finds making and mechanical things very therapeutic, these videos somehow helps me calm my anxiety enough for me to fall asleep. (then I usually watch the video again next day but for entertainment) So thank you for making these! Keep being awesome 🌟
Anyone know why the velociraptor videos have been changed to private?
@krvnjrcbs Well, that answers a lot...... NOT
Watching these one day builds make me so freaking happy and relaxed. Honestly I love this so much
"scuse me, I'm just gonna spin my deal"..
Same!
This Old Tony callout! nice
Seriously what happened to the velociraptor videos? Y'all even deleted the tweets mentioning their existence. Even the videos for the studio are gone, painting room, foam ball, etc. What happened?
Yeah its so weird! I was halfway through part 3 and the video just stopped playing!! Would be good to at least know if they are coming back in the future.
The Animax blog post has also been removed, so it's not a RUclips isolated issue ... perhaps a falling out ?
Yeah I noticed yesterday, wanted to ask during the livestream, but commenting was only available to members
i know all gone
Maybe Universal got a little IP anxiety? One could argue that (and I would agree with them) how can someone claim ownership of a dinosaur form and the puppetry to make it a human wearable custome? While that sounds like a healthy to have and even winnable argument, if my guess is correct, it would be against the team of lawyers specializing in IP protection that a company like Universal must employ. To me that sounds like a very very very expensive and long long long argument to potentially win.
Just aquired a similar vice myself, the Eclipse 180 instrument makers vice, and I cant get over how nicely its designed, really great for a small shop in particular
Make your peace with threads on the lathe, both ToT and Joe Pi haev terrific walk throughs. Make your peace with it and never look back.
I know that I'm late to the party but I'm catching up. "I got nowhere else to go!" Classic. You truly are an officer and a gentleman, Sir.
What happened to raptor build?
"Roughly parable ... -_-" Don't you just love that moment where you sit there silent and ask your brain "Why *that* word of ALL the words we know???"
Those knobs are really nice! Well done!
I so do - brain injury and consequent brain fog makes that a mostly daily occurrence for me. I will say that sometimes the substitute word is amusing, and I kinda feel bad for my poor brain scrambling for anything that sounds like the intended words then coming up all proud.
This old Tony: Springs. The spring was invented to fill the gap between winter and summer....
It's been satisfying to see Adam's confidence in machining grow over the past year. He didn't have the experience to build this vice a year ago.
Think the first ODB I watched was the DL-44 build way back when! Still get just as excited when I see a new upload after all this time!! Amazing effort, thank you!
“I don’t machine stuff that’s this precise.”
You do now.
This Old Tony has a joke rate of about 1/30s in his videos. He be dry but the joy be flowing.
He is the definition of dry. Espeically when he forgets to turn on the oil pump on his Maho.
I love his humor, my wife does not get it at all though lol
Yeah, I love those videos. Been working my way through all of them the past few days.
@@bill_and_amanda mine loves him.
"This is gonna take another day"
next day: "this is already mechanically working"
Love your work. Next time, could you tell us what you had to do to fix the parallels? Curiosity is killing me.
Well he obviously said: Screw tolerances! And drilled the hole bigger ^^
39:20 I don't think he needed to, it seems it was ok
I must say I truly love the way you feel about tight tolerances being such a joy to share the joy with you I just happen to love that kind of stuff to your passion is addictive
I would absolutely love to watch Adam Savage build a Gingery Lathe from scratch. If anyone could do it... Well, I bet Mr. Savage is one of the relatively few who can.
Nothing better than the feel and accomplishment of building things with your hands. For us it is LEGO builds. Not quite the same but it is very satisfying.
36:47 This right here is why I love watching you Adam. That whole sequence sums up your personality in a heartbeat.
Velociraptor? I'm going to start videoing my screen onto punched tape. Stainless of course.
The Time has come to mirror RUclips completly. :D
"That's 31 64." ... Every time i hear you say something like that i'm super happy to live in an metric world ^^
Look up binary - you don't infact live in a "metric" world
@@PatrickPease uhm what? Pretty sure they live in reality- which in case you didn't know, isn't binary.
Binary is a numeral system. Metric is a measurement system. They are not comparable. Also, one can both live in a Metric, and Binary world, considering they aren't mutually exclusive.
@@PatrickPease Oh, wow. Someone doesn't know what binary means. Like at all.
@@PatrickPease You don't need to take my "metric world" literally, you know? And i know binary. I'm a software dev. It's not a measurement system.
I want all the collaborations between ThisOldTony and Adam! :D
I want to see Adam and Colin Furze collaborate.
I’ve watched a few of your one day builds and I absolutely love them. Fantastic! It would obviously not be a one day build, but I would LOVE to see you build an off road vehicle... the attention to detail you have is outstanding!!!
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who talks to them self and act funny lol about how good things go in the shop. Love watching you please keep doing this. and I'll keep watching. Thank you Adam you are the man and your team is too . I truly appreciate it especially during covid-19
I haven't the slightest idea what this guy is doing but I love the hell out of watching him work. He's explaining and I'm listening but it all looks fascinating. I watch him doing other one-day projects and I like this channel very much. I'm about as far you can get from being a machinist but the craftsmanship is amazing to watch.
"Because I had to turn the flutes in the clamp knobs" is a good sentence... I like that sentence.
This old Tony is awesome 😁
Amazing video, just love watching all the intricate marching, definitely going to watch it again
Really clean. Exciting to watch your own progression even knowing you're already so skilled.
Enjoyed this video! I know it's not for many, but thought-out and precise work is mesmerizing to me.
Adam "I thought the camera was rolling" Savage
Precision chaos. Thou and 1/2 tolerance, leaves barn door wide open, we love you Adam.
Thanks for not editing out those gaps when you are trying to remember a word. I'm going through that now and I thought I was mentally going down a bad road. Glad to know you do it too, now I know that it's just a bump in the road and to just carry on.
Mr Savage, you are an inspiration dude! This reminds me of my days at my grandfather’s die-cast factory. Thank you!
I'm 34 years old and just starting to fall in love with machining by hand..... It will take me a lifetime to accumulate half the equipment and tooling....I love it because no matter how good you are, there is always more to learn....your a perfect example...I look you like a professor, but you consider yourself a student
I love it when Adam does his own camera work. it feels like we're in the room with him and there's no shaky, out of focus or looking at the wrong thing.
one of your best videos , you attention to detail is awesome , brilliant just brilliant .
I love machining! I will be FOREVER grateful to my high school shop teacher Mr. Jones. We had to clock in like we where at work, had to do an internship and a bunch of other stuff lol. I have 1161 hours of learning documented on a certificate, and I don't even know that they still even offer the class anymore.. Kinda sad.. My only good memories from school came from that shop.
After watching every “One Day Build”, you start seeing a pattern
-what he is making
-thow reference (100,200,300)
-whistle
-“delightful”
-drums on desk or wood item
-“quick and dirty”
-forgets to turn on camera reference
-glue or cutting oil importance
-fingers through hair
-glasses on/off/on
2 days later........
-end
And I love it every-time
"Positive hold"
Hi Adam,
I just love your videos. Your upbeat style just lifts my spirit every time, and I find myself imagining having a workshop like yours with all those amazing machines. Of course I would go entirely metric, because those imperial mesurements are just a mystery to me 😉
All my best to you and those around you!
Love the One Day Builds, and this is no exception! BUT, I can't help but worry for Adam's eyes when I see him machining cast iron with just regular eyewear! Please take care of those puppies, so we can have One Day Builds for a long time to come!
You must do more of this work and the same camera angles, beautiful just beautiful.
That sound of well milled metal sliding across well milled metal. Mmm so good!
Man, this video made me miss working in a machine shop. Mills are the greatest tools ever!
On Adam's headstone..."I thought the camera was rolling." Love your stuff man.
I love projects that make you grow.
Reminds me of my fly vice. You should do one next
Can you imagine not knowing One Day Builds exist and then finding them organically and having days worth of videos to watch for the first time? That would be amazing!
Lucky people
That'd be me today 😂!
These videos are my ASMR relaxy time.
WILSOONNNNNN! I found an old Wilson hiding in a corner of the barn/shop when I bought the place. Its on my list to clean up. man its a beast
Love your one day builds.and have added a few into my own shop. Kudos
Looks like a fun kit. Might pick one up myself
he's a national treasure
Well done Adam! I have a 1968 Wilton C0 from Schiller Pk that I'm working on getting into nice shape and I look forward to watching your work on yours.
The Hemingway vise is pretty cool as well! I can see where some of the uses will come into play. It's affords you the same capability of a Wilton Baby Bullet on a powrarm.
Very well done!
Very nice indeed.
22:41 is so satisfying! I love to see threads come together for the first time.
Wait...Taako? From TV?
“Excuse me while I spin my deal” lol 😂 best line from this ODB
Such a great build. I just feel like I'm left wanting after you came back for day two and had already fixed it.
How have I never heard of Hemingway Kits before!! This video could cost me a lot of money!!
knowing adam, he'll probably go with something bright, like yellow or orange, but I think both vises would look great in gun blue.
@Adam Thank you for the content you put out everyday! Also hello from Canada! :D
I just paused at 12:26 after sitting up and saying to myself, out loud, "Oh, because the middle is the hard part!"
That was fun.
Ok, going back to video.
Very cool. Let’s get it on!
love this vice if only i had the skill set for a project like this.
Super nice cut on the v groove!!
Nice work Adam.
Nice build ! I need to think about building one of those for my small engine projects. It would come in handy.
Love it, keep up the Amazing work.
I always look forward to your one day builds. Several things caught my eye today that i cannot unsee. Rings and watches are dangerous in the shop, almost as dangerous as leaving the barn door open 😆😆😆
Im pleased with it....... you'll see where it goes....
Man, Adam, you run those bits fast!
@12:26 - that's why step drills are so great when working in thin stock - you get the same "clear out a small middle then work the radius" efficiency without having to stop and change tools and worry about getting off-center.
Super nice.
So glad ThisOldTony was mentioned. LOVE his content. guy is brilliant
That was fun
Now that's what I call a milling machine, YEE HAW!
Space Cowboys is on TV tonight in the UK, well, Scotland (on ITV4), am doing my damnedest to spot the Universal Greeblie right now :) I'd like to say thanks to you Adam and to all of the crew at Tested who make this channel possible. Thanks for keeping us all entertained during the pandemic, I've enjoyed many many hours of watching your stuff over the last year, I can tell it's a lot of hard work, and war wounds :-o. I hope things get back to normal for us all soon. I know you have a gazillion projects all going on at once but I would love to see you do an Aliens APC scratch build at some point in the future. All the best.
Amassing work
This video is fantastic, I think this one might be the next kit I buy. 🤔
Very nice.
wish we could give multiple thumbs up - that was a great build!
I come to see art, I stay for the little tidbits of wisdom along the way.
Nice "Officer and a Gentleman" reference at 37:00!
Looked really good! Would have loved to see the upper clamp in use
Taking the time to step up drill bit sizes to the final hole always drove my boss batty for the extra time it took; also, "Why was I always asking for new 1/16" bits?" [mostly dealing with fairly precise adaptations/modifications of plastic enclosures by hand - though sometimes aluminum, occasionally steel] Also, starting smaller can let you correct any mistakes; if the hole goes out of round or you find it off-center, you still have the material to file/carve/etc. the hole back on center allowing the next bit(s) to bring it back into compliance.
Yet I never heard a complaint about my results... or a compliment that 99 44/100% of time I didn't have to start over with new material.
Top 5 reasons for the fails I did have:
1) Being rushed.
2) Cheap plastic that was laminated in the casting process & peeled. (Can also be caused by #4)
3) Being in a hurry.
4) Dull drill bits. (they wander)
5) Not taking the time to do it right.
Last bit of advice - for sheet metal and thin panels, step bits are your friend. (I still start with 1/16" pilot, and work my way up to the 3/16" or matching "starting" dia. of the step bit as needed.)
These one day builds stand out among all the maker content on YT because more than any other I full believe that if the camera went away Adam would be doing exactly the same thing
I was waiting for this ❤️🔥
I think what we need here is a good old fashioned vice off! We need This Old Tony to build one... AvE should certainly throw his 'Coon skin cap into the ring. Hell, even Project Farm!!
This is fascinating.
I have designed threads in CAD before, but I never knew how they are made manually.
I’d love a “Directors” cut of these. Long versions, no time lapse.
To my understanding he usually sets the camera to some sort of time lapse mode, so I don't think he's got real time footage for the entire time lapse.
@@Prahlis92 yeah, and he has also mentioned how he usually does time lapse so he can listen to music that he would other wise get copyright strikes for. We can dream though.
reference to clickspring! Yes!!
Adam, awesome work, and have you ever seen a fractal vise? Whoah, you need one! Lol 😆
