It turned out to be a clogged low-speed jet in the carburetor. I took it out and blew out the jet and passages and it runs like a top. What carb is on your '50? This was the Carter W-1 on mine and I guess they were prone to clogging.
I have the same issue with my 50 Chevy I change the spark plugs, points, rebuild carburetor, fuel pump, distributor cap about to change my vacuum advanced see if that makes it work
Seafoam . Run it for a few days and see if it gets better . If not don't run ethanol blended gas . I run the midgrade or top grade gas . Also is more stable over time . Use compressed air after all else Fales to clean out the carb passages .
Hi, sorry for the delay. I have a Rochester B, but I'm replacing it with a Carter YF. It should run much better. I also discovered that my old 6 volt coil works better than my new 12 volt with the external resistor, (I hear the 12 volt coils that require external resistor are actually 6 volt coils anyway). I also put the spring from my old vacuum advance in the new one and low and behold it works better too. New carb arrives today! Replaced plug wires too! Mine's getting better slowly.
Did you check your intake and exhuast gasket ? Get a can of B-12 chemtool and spray the base of the carb and gaskets that are agains the head Also look for any black on the exhaust gasket
get rid of that carter and you'll be pleased. mine would never run with a factory rebuilt one. never could get the idle down where it needs to be. rebuilt an old Rochester I had laying around and runs perfect
Jumped time! Replace the timing chain ! Try turning the distributor way around first right then left to it smoothes out! Any money that it jumped a cog, these old 216 we're notoriius that way!
Did you ever figure out it out? My 50 Styleline Deluxe is doing the same thing. Got it running 6 months ago, drove fine and then...barely got it home about a month ago. I've done tune up sequence per manual including new fuel pump, points, condenser, coil, 12 volt upgrade, vacuum advance, rebuilt carb 3 times, cap, and rotor. Today I pulled the auxillaries to do a block flush and pull the head to check valves and do a complete rebuild. I have 120 psi on all six cylinders! What the heck??
Hi Brent, I think cleaning should suffice for most. I sucked up some residual junk in mine before I replaced the fuel tank, pump and lines. After a cleaning I've gotten 3 seasons without a problem out of it. Hope you're able to get things sorted out. If you need parts, Walker products has brand new pieces for the W-1 carbs. buy.walkerproducts.com/carburetor/components/carter/carter-1bbl-w-1-carburetor-components.html
@@Throwinwrenches Thanks!!! mine is doing the same thing and just trying to diagnose. In addition its over heating so thought it may have been related. did you do it yourself? any tips?
@@carlosgranados2274 hi Carlos- yes. The best thing to do is buy a rebuild kit from Mike's Carburetor Parts and follow the steps in his kit. Get a clean workspace and it's an easy rebuild. Good luck with yours.
@@michaelmosqueda2811 thanks! I had the same issue as above. After it started running better I busted an intake gasket. I kept adjusting timing to compensate but later turned out to be lost compression. Its currently at the shop getting rebuilt. so yes, in the end, timing was compensating what was going bad and running hot.
Glad to hear this. If you need a hand with anything, the VCCA (Vintage Chevrolet Club of America) is a great resource. They're online at vcca dot org Thanks for the reply!
Daryl Scott awesome brother glad to hear , easy carb to work on , Done it a few times now and I can literally have it off in two minutes, and then clean it in another five and have it all back on in 15 minutes LOL
Some people that appear to have no mechanical aptitude whatsoever should not own something so nice there is nothing simpler than a 216 Chevy my advice is sell the car to someone that appreciates and understands the most basic mechanical devices
How does 1 learn the basics unless you get in there and learn by trial and error? Instead of throwing salt on the man share some of your expertise on the very basic mechanical devices that you know so much about ....or do you?
Thanks for your input, Tony. I still have the car and it runs like a top today. I learned how to rebuild the carb and it turned out to be a low speed jet. Your comments offer nothing useful. Feel free to start your own channel with all of your priceless advice. I'll be sure to subscribe.
I'm sure you got everything working 1st time seeing your video nice truck to me it sounded like it had a vacuum leak Nice truck sir

Might want to check your distributor bushings see if there’s play in distributor ship from side to side that’ll mess up your Dwell
Sounds like a clogged low speed jet in the carb…. Did he ever find out what it was?
It was exactly that.
Check if you are getting enough gas to the carburetor you might just need a brand new fuel line from the tank to the the fuel pump

Why do you engage mouth before brain. Gears don't jump time.

You must use Stabil marine gas treatment! You now have crystals in the low speed idle jet and in the bowl.
Ethanol free gas?
Do you use lead additive?
I do now.
I have one ...i let my neighbor change plugs, oil etc. while i was at work ...now it has trouble with the idle ( ...it didn't before! ..WTH?)
bad vacuum advance??? maybe
is it better to clean the jets of better to replace the jets? don't know how many times the Carter w-1 in my 48 coupe has been rebuilt

Jets shouldn't need change as long as no one has been poking them with drills or wires.
Jets should last the life of the carb.
You got it carb
Question, was it overheating when you had this issue?
Hi Carlos, no the coolant was normal operating temp

Ethanol is the enemy.
1 or 2 Spark plugs...
Clean the carb
Thats exactly what I did. Low.speed.jet was clogged. Good as new today.
