Decided a couple months ago that I wanted to run a 5k. I felt like I didn’t have any accomplishments at all while all of my friends are doing all of this crazy stuff with their lives. I’ve only told a couple people because I really just want to do this for myself. The race is next month and I’m so excited!!
Oh, I hope you have loads of fun and that it goes extremely well for you. Just crossing the finish line is such an achievement, and anything on top of that is the cherry!
How'd it go?! I'm in the same boat. Needed to break the monotony of ..." I'm 40..nothing else to achieve." Def have stuff to conquer and running is helping.
For any outdoor running, I highly recommend Shokz bone conduction headphones over anything that actually sits in your ear. You are able to hear your surroundings so much better which I find important for safety!
i know it‘s expensive but getting an apple watch + air pods pro was the best investment ever for my running journey. not having to carry my phone and the noise cancellation to really get in zone is SO NICE.😊
I've been running for fun on and off and really getting into it this last month. One of my goals for 2024 is to do half a marathon (at some point) and I feel very beginner but very excited about it 😊
Thank you babes for sharing all the information. I never liked running and hated it deeply but lately I realized I want to bring up my fitness. So me and my friend just signed up for a half marathon in Berlin next year. I have no experience and just started my first run yesterday. Your tips helped me a lot and I am super motivated now!!!
your videos always feel so well prepared and professional, and your personality is so easy to connect with! thank you for feeling like a big sis to me!
A quality running vest should last FAR longer than a year. Also, beyond investing in good trainers (via a running store that can assess you) you really don’t need any fancy equipment. Running is an accessible form of exercise. Over time you will want to invest in certain clothes, vests, hats, etc etc but you truly don’t need them if you’re starting out.
To add to this, I’ve been running for two years and still use the corded apple earbuds that came with my phone. 😂 on days when all my double-lined socks were in the wash, I had success wearing two pairs of socks 🤷🏻♀️. A lot of messaging out there will try to convince you to buy things and replace them often. But this can add barriers to people who want to run and feel they can’t afford it. It also puts more crap in the landfills.
I've just rewatched this as I'm determined to get back into running (did it in lockdown but now basically starting from zero and I know how hard that first run is going to be, so have been putting it off!! Thank you for all these tips especially the "how to keep going"!
I recently started running, around September is when I started running as a hobby, I did cross country at school and am seeing improvement already, I bring a bookbag with me with; water, a small light snack(if it's a long route), I have a good pair of running shoes that work for me, right now I'm working on my running form and pacing myself right now and am watching this before I go for a run!
I absolutely loved this video! I have just started the couch to 5k programme and I am loving getting back into running. I did athletics for years and cross country but I havent been running for probably about 6 years so im easing myself back in, but this video is really motivating and makes me so excited to be a running girly again!
Thank you for your tips and positive energy! I’ve run a marathon and an ultra marathon before (years ago) and recently decided to sign up for the Munich Marathon in Oct but have been finding it really hard to get back into running…your video definitely helped and I feel refuelled and look forward to my next (long) run tomorrow after listening to you 🙏🏼😊👏🏼
I’m so glad I found you!! Weightlifting has always been my primary source of movement and I love that environment, but have recently wanted to challenge myself and train for a 5K. And you’re right; NOBODY talks about how to incorporate both!
Thanks for such an informative vid! I’ve done two 5ks and ran a lot in the pandemic. Once lockdown stopped and life started lifing, I’ve gained back abt 40 lbs due to grief from losing my best friend this year😢 however, I’m slowly gaining my love for fitness again and am training for a half marathon in Monterey bay, CA scheduled for this November. I’ll be training with my runs, strength train twice a week and Pilates as well. Thanks again for the motivation! ❤🏃🏾♀️
Not intended as a hate comment but an expensive running vest that lasts a year doesnt seem like something worth investing in... i would class someting as having good longevity if it can serve you for a couple of years. i have a 10 pound running backpack/vest and its lasted me 3 years now, not any special main stream brand.
Yah agreed, my running vest is Nathan but it is a year old and still going strong, for context I use it 1-2 times per week for several hours. I don’t know why it or something similar wouldn’t last. I do hand wash mine and I don’t beat it up.. but then again I don’t know why someone would..
Thank you for sharing! This video is very helpful. I started running with a club in January. First run was 5k that was hard 😩 Now starting to see a difference and starting to love going out for a run. Can't wait for the lighter evenings so I can get out more.
I started watching your videos when I started running for my first half marathon. I love your running videos and workout videos. You started me to get into weight training. I’m signed up for my 2nd half this September :)
@hollyb_fitness ~ Thanks for this video! I hit the ground running this new year and kept it up until just a couple of months ago due to needing rest! I never thought about creating a taper/rest plan before/after races. I didn't realize that I couldn't keep maintaining excessive running every week and every month without some sort of downtime other than a single rest day a week or just finding a different activity to keep me in shape. I think we all live and learn in some way, so I really liked this video for reminding about the importance of mental headspace. Cheers to everyone on their fitness journey this year!🏃♀💕
Longevity isn’t a year 😢 My shoes I wear are the ASICS gel nimbus 25, white Powerbeats pro headphones, salomon vest or runly, cleoharper clothes or Lululemon but I want to try LSKD and 2xu. I also wear an Apple watch and will stick with that as I don’t care about all the data. I’m currently into hilly and trail runs so one day shorter trail and longer hilly roads on weekend.
another running vid!! Been really enjoying ur content lately 💜 thanks for the tips u r so inspiring for me to continue with running 🥰 I always click on ur videos so so fast
If it makes you feel better if you’re in decent shape I assure you that you won’t be last. Just take it at your own pace! Run your OWN race, that’s all that matters. Racing can be so much fun, and the sense of accomplishment afterwards is great.
I started with buying my pair of trainer its hoka wide and i love it. Still looking for a belt bag which i can put in my phone, key and money in. May be a vest will be better i think. Going to find a good head cover too. And a sunglasses.
Bloody love a run, any day but especially to clear my head ❤ Love ASICS shoes, though if I spent 70£ on a vest I would hope for longer that a year…. All the other recommendations though 👍
I’ve been running for 15 years, one thing here I will say is doing more slow runs doesn’t make you faster, to get fast you have to run fast. Yes you need them to build your aerobic base. If you want to run a 2:45 Marathon for example then you have to be putting that pace into your runs. I could go on and on with the best advice/tips but it would take up the whole comment section 😊 Have a plan, practice fueling on long runs, eat ALOT of carbs, trainers.. what works for you, I have 8-10 pairs, few plates for racing, fast shoes for sessions and a recovery.
since youve been running so long i was wondering if you know what kind of strength training i should do for my legs, because i got runners knee twice and i just got over it the second time but i dont want to start running again until i strengthen my knees and legs but i dont know what to do. thanks!
@@Wb0u1 Watch Stephen Scullion on RUclips he does some great videos on this. Be careful with squats for your knees. Lunges, lunge circuits, single leg press, dumbell sumo deadlifts.
I did my first 5k yesterday without stopping AND hit a PB with my pace. Genuinely do think it’s all down to your videos and advice. I’ve bought your plans too I’m so excited to start tomorrow ❤ Is there another way to access the group apart from Facebook as I don’t have Facebook?
I just started running / cal deficit - I started at 119 and down to 108 it’s only been 3 months! I was using sketchers hahah My doctor told me those were the worst shoes to get about to get some new ones lol thank you for the video!
I'm sorry, but this video was too good. I LOVE watching running tip videos but cringe when people advertise Hokas or Nike shoes only based on their popularity. I am an ASICS girly and have the same ones as you but the cumulus version. Also running in align shorts are amazing. This whole video honestly made me feel so secure as a runner that I am doing the right things because most RUclipsrs are recommending products for commission, I can tell you actually LOVE these items and the similarity between your picks and mine make me want to watch all of your videos now - thank you for being true to you.
With food, you really need to experiment…everyone’s different. I personally get super nauseous so I prefer to eat 2+ hours before I go for my run. Totally agree with the mental aspect of running, I sometimes get overly anxious about my performance, but I keep at it bc it’s such a great stress reliever for me. ❤ Love the video, thanks for the tips 😊
Do you have any good apps/tips for planning routes? I'm trying to increase my distance but struggle to know routes that will get me to a distance so sometimes I just end up finishing early because I've 'ran' out of distance if that makes sense! x
Hey Holly, great video. I’m just about to start training for my first 1/2 marathon so super excited after watching this video! Is the running vest one size? The photos show it on a man and woman so I’m wondering is it just a case of adjusting to my body but there’s just one size you can buy?
Hi thank you for your video! I was wondering what sunglasses you use? I’ve seen you with a more red version and blue. They look very comfortable! Thank you!
Do you have any tips for running plans/progressive overload? I’ve been running for years but never really progressed past 8k. I know that my route always has me knackered by the end but have never really seen myself improve in both length and speed.
They don’t recommend the align shorts for running. They feel amazing but will pill over time due to legs rubbing against each other. Did see a whole bunch of lululemon wunder train shorts during SF marathon tho.
Hi Holly- love your videos! However running assessment trainer shops are not ideal, please use a qualified podiatrist to advise you on what trainers you need. The shop software is awful in all shops and people who work there aren’t qualified as much as podiatrists to advise properly! 🙏 I’m a physio and we see a lot of people who’ve been given the wrong advice by them 😮
One year into your running journey, and you've tried 30-50 running shorts? Girl, are you crazy?? What kind of uninformed shopping decisions were those???? 😧😫🤣
Real running coaches, like MoTTIV, for example, who train high level athletes says that we should run the way we feel comfortable and get a neutral shoe and not have someone assess our stride, gait, etc. I will listen to a trained professional with years of experience over you. Thanks. Bye.
As someone who’s been running for half my life, imo you really don’t need to invest in super expensive shorts as long as you have a good chafing cream 🤍🙏

Such a good insight to have early on!
I’d recommend stocking up on the gel kayano 29’s because the new 30’s that are out aren’t as supportive and won’t help with your shin splints!
i always make sure to watch a couple of your videos before cross country season!! it helps my pick out the best stuff!!
Agree totally
I made the decision to start training for a marathon today. Thank you for this video!!!🙌🏼😌

such an amazing video, thank you!
having big thighs is a struggle for girls who like running on shorts 😭 biker shorts have been my go to
I recommend cycling your running shoes if you have issues. I use 3-4 different types of shoes and don’t get injured anymore.

Zone 1 training is your friend. Work on distance and speed separately and you will find both will improve.

Could you tack the west please?
For blisters, just buy socks that don’t have cotton in them. That’s then only thing that works for me!
Do you have a running playlist? Can you share your running playlist? xo
Holly, you came into a School a couple of minutes ago. I love you and I love doing that for a jump.
Thank you so much for this! FAB information 🤍
I recommend open ear headphones. I think theyre called shocks? That way you can hear cars
Love your video
I lift weights and I know exactly how to eat before training
But for running that’s so tough
Because I need 3 hours after eating to run …and I work a 9-5 and live 1 1/2 hours away… I am applying for new jobs lol
love
S is for SALOMON not amazon
Have you tried any Sweaty Betty gear for running? I generally love this brand, but I’m afraid to buy the wrong pair of shorts!
I need something in my hand when I’m running 😅😭
