Great video, thanks! Ive got a Tektronix 2215. I really like it. I have been looking at the new digital scopes, I've been looking at Siglent and Rigol scopes, not sure which offers more value. I am a retired field engineer with Hewlett Packard. Electronics is a hobby now. Audio equipment, guitar amps, ham equipment, etc... Thanks for your video! In college I remember looking at lissajous patterns. In real life I have never needed to use the XY function of a scope. I used to need the scope to troubleshoot with, to align disk heads, to adjust start and stop ramps for tape drive capstan motors..... Lots of fun stuff. In my later years I didn't really need a scope. About all I needed was my laptop and perhaps a screwdriver! Times really changed in my 37 years with HP! I find your channel interesting and subscribed.

Analogue Oscilloscopes have very important role in setting up a swept RF signal, where I tune precisely the center frequency, which cannot be set on any other instrument easily, and Digital storage oscilloscopes are pretty useless at that, the main problem being that when analogue signals overlap on the display they create a brighter area where the two signals overlap, it is hard to explain, a signal is a signal and it occurs only once at a certain point in time, and its position of the screen, but if your trigger settings were set such that the same signal may display on the screen at different locations on the screen, then these locations glow as the phosphor is struck by electron beam, and if an area on the screen is getting more frequent sweeps of the same signal it will be brighter in that area, and dimmer in other areas, this is crucial in my gadget for setting the correct center frequency. DSO cannot achieve this, no matter what, so I treasure this old 100MHZ Goldstar oscilloscope that has served me for more than 25 years, I also have a colour DSO with a printer for which I paid nearly $7500 back in 1994, but is pretty useless for setting this swept RF but it has very useful features which analogue oscilloscope cannot meet, so both are equally good in their own way.

Szervusz! Okay! So we have learned from the video that if we ever need to use an oscilloscope as a clock, an analog scope is the better choice.

@月The answer is the truth. Analog scopes work better than the digitals in this capacity due to the persistent nature of the CRT and phosphorus afterglow of the moving trace. What's stupid is a person that cannot recognize humor. I personally own several Tektronix analog scopes and use them regularly. Different equipment will have different strengths and weaknesses. To argue about this and call one garbage, and having emotional relationships (love) with the equipment is irrational.

Now, I have kept about 5,000 pesos(about 100$) and I'm planning to buy 12$ DIY oscilloscope but from what I've searched, they call it a 'toy'. I don't necessarily believe them as it will suffice my experiments. But I've saw an analog oshttpscilloscope in marketplace selling for Php4900(100$) Goldstar 90200 almost exactly like the one we saw in this video. It says no issue and stuffs. Do you recommend me to buy it? I really like it and I think it's much more versatile. Keep in mind every 1$ is a day for me as I live in a 3rd world country. I really need to make a good decision. No one I know has experience or even know oscilloscopes so I hope you can help me. And if ever I would buy it, what would I look for and to make sure it is reliable and actually works? Hi, I need to check if Copy Generation Management System - Analog (CGMS-A) is enabled on an analog output STB. Can an oscilloscope detect these waves? I read CGMS-A embeds in the media CCI in the vertical blanking interval of the video signal (lines 20 or 21)
    if that helps at all?

    • @bzoli5706

I don't know what kind of oscilloscope do you want to use. But most of them have TV Synchron mode, and a built-in line selector, and you can see on the screen only the 20th or 21st TV line. But the scope won't recognize your special signal. You have to do it.

The real question is, why most of digital oscilloscopes (except the last one) couldn't display it as good as analogue ones and how that would translate in the real-world performance of an oscilloscope.

The keyword is the waveform measured, changing all the time in 12 hours cycles, and a phenomena called "the Nyquist rate" with respect to how analog-to-digital converters works with waveforms.

Analogue oscilloscopes often have a Z modulation input which can help give better displays. I think this clock hides the darkened areas of trace by moving fast : the Siglen in large-memory mode catches even this but does not apply it to the persistence modelling.
I think you chose variable persistence on one scope and varied the sample speed or length in others, probably to show each at it's best but didn't explore it too far.

I’m sorry for my pronunciation, but unfortunately, when I was a kid I couldn’t learn English yet to speak without an accent. But I think it’s still better than a lot of silent movie videos in which the makers just point, or show a full-screen text just for 2 seconds. Okay, I know that you can freeze the video.

...inside the crt you have a fluorescent layer which keeps light stored even after the beam passed to anothe rposition, therefore you have the impression of fluid image. A digital osciloscope don't have that - in shows the beam walking around as it really does. Learn something and document yourself. Such "Toy" applications were remainings of the analog era. They don't reflect the purpose of any type of osciloscope.

    • @cenchloraadums3143
      @cenchloraadums3143 3 года назад +1

Yeah, only your comments makes some sense. I was thinking this clock signal generator depicts the capability of an oscilloscope. But again, since the digital oscilloscope with lowest depth of memory and sampling rate (25kpts and 250MS/s) could display it fairly good and the best capable digital oscilloscope needed its original depth of memory to be lowered to display it properly, it appeared this application was no measurement of the strength of an oscilloscope or how good it would performance in real world applications.

Why siglent with 700 kpts of memory can't display with quality than 2.5 kpts tektronix? what can problem with siglent in signal processing? I have this siglent and works very good but when you reach minimun time division, memory is only 7 or 14 points, however, also I have MDO3054, you can reach minimun time division and keepts same 10 Mpts in memory, I think tektronix data processing is better chinese oscilloscopes, rigol has scopes from 500 usd with a lot of memory, the MDO3054 is near to 20k usd only has 10 Mpts, is not comparable for price difference, but when you see a new chinese oscilloscope with 14 Mpts (siglent) for less 500 usd and you see 20k usd tektronix with only 10 Mpts you think tektronix is thieving but reallity is other hand.

The only useful advantage of an analog oscilloscope occurs when observing Lissajou figures - e.g. when tuning clocks, sine wave generators, PLL systems, etc.
XY mode for observing magnetic hysteresis or other "one-off" waveforms on a ~$400 digital oscilloscope works even better than on an analog oscilloscope.
Displaying a "watch" on an oscilloscope screen is a joke!

    • @bzoli5706
