Hi all,
hope you enjoy my new apartment & this apartment tour. I am working on a more in depth video about the outdoor courtyards but I want to gather a few more experiences & learn some lessons before I'll be able to talk about outdoor gardening in more depth :)

Congratulations on your RUclips plaque! You make fantastic content! Greetings from Milwaukee, Wisconsin - USA!
“Subscribed” your plants are so mesmerizing😊
Plesae, Sydney, subtitulos en Español
hello, it’s amazing. Thanks for the videos. I am very crazy about gardening
I recently shifted to a new accommodation and I purchased few plants instead purchasing the groceries 😅
One way to stop cats jumping the fence is to put a fence roller on it, so a pole with a tube outside of it. When paws touch the tube it spins so they can't get traction. The tricky part would be figuring out how to attach it to the fence without drilling into it, but cable ties my help. You could also use a tie out and harness for him to chill outside with you. The plants are looking lovely in your new place!
Thanks :) yeah i saw those … drilling is the issue but I might just email the landlord :) at this stage we have just done supervised visits and it’s working well :)
Whoaaa, K'eyush is here too ❤😊
Keeping his claws cut might also help.
As a fellow owner of a huge Warocqueanum, I was so happy when you cut that big, damaged leaf. So many people are TERRIFIED of *pruning* their rare plants, forgetting that it actually signals the plant to GROW. Congrats on the RUclips plaque! You definitely deserve recognition for quality content!
I think you’ve done an excellent job with your initial set up of your plants. I love the way the plants looked hooked on the fence! Your indoor and outdoor plants and space will continue to adjust until you have “settled” mentally. Minimizing the anxiety and stress with what is “suppose to be done” is a must. Allow yourself the time and space to appreciate the changes and enjoy the challenges to bring out your creativity and inner strength. “Go with the flow!” ❤
Thanks :)
Get Brad a harness and lease! He might need some time to get used to it but its a great way to take him out and keep him contained while you supervise. If he gets really comfortable with the harness you could even take him on walks! I have plenty of friends with lease trained cats that love going on walks.
Beautiful home! Love what you’ve done with the place. Thank you for keeping it real and never sugar coating. Your authenticity is appreciated 😊💚🪴
Thanks :)
Love the new apartment and great layout of plants :)
Congratulations on your RUclips award 👏
Thank you:)
You have done ALOT in a short time!!! Everything looks great already. For AJ could you make a outdoor enclosure similar to a dog run? You could have it connected through an open window without damaging the apartment. You can always connect plants around the enclosure so it isn't a eyesore.
Ugh... the challenges of figuring out the best natural light space for plants. Your new place looks great, Jan.
(True story, when we moved into our place, I woke up early so I could watch where the sun exposure was and what plants would be best suited for the area. The furniture was just an afterthought.
What a beautiful home for you and Brad and it already has this warmth homey feeling, congrats ! Beautiful aesthetic as always and you hands down have the best planty + content on RUclips 🎉 thank you for sharing and I am looking forward to your next video yay!
Thank you :)
A beauty, inspiring smaller collection to taller/robust later as usual. Enjoy your new apartment/plant apartment
I love that you have shared all this personal life stuff with us. I have been watching your videos since you started RUclips and i gotta say the more you share about yourself, the more I want to watch theses videos. Thanks for making awesome content and taking us along for the bumpiness and fun of living with giant houseplants and Brad. 😊
Leash and harness for the kitty. I've done this with my cats when camping. Love your channel and your beautiful plants. Canada
I love that you hung plants onto the fence! I never would have thought of that, definitely something I'll have to keep in mind for the future.
Marvelous ideas 😮
I like what you’ve done so far and I especially like the outdoor patios! Everything will be beautiful!
I know that you were always doing videos and looking for ideas for new ones. I think you should do an entire video on past and how you specifically deal with them because you don’t seem to have a problem and other folks do. You could also cover fertilizers and other plant care such as if you put oil on your leaves and stuff like that.
Right out the gate those Alocasias made me SO HAPPY! Thanks for the great display idea as well, I will be doing it this weekend! Awesome channel.
You could put a catio outside for Brad, either build one or try to find an aviary for him so he can be outside but still enclosed and then you don't have to worry about attaching it to anything
one way to keep the moss in your poles moist is to put sponges in the center of your pole.
The moss is pretty much like a natural sponge anyway :)
“It also contributes to anxiety” lol Love it! Your collection is amazing and you make it look so easy! 🌱
You ability to talk to your audience - essentially people you don't know, in a trusting, friendly way, as if we were your good mates, really fascinates me. Also, I really appreciate how you can talk about plant care routine stuff in such an interesting and engaging way that it's hard to put the phone down! It's an amazing social skill, not many content creators have.
I learned heaps from your channel! Thank you for sharing your plant jourrneys 🙏🏼❤️🪴
Enjoy your new lovely home and plants. Love to see how you will change after your guess leave. Love to see what you have change and place outdoors. Enjoy🪴💚🌿
Congratulations on the new apartment and the RUclips award!! Well deserved!! ❤ I’ve just gotten into exotic plants this last year, so next move we make I’ll be checking window orientations and the amount of brightness will be the dealbreaker! I’m relying on grow lights right now. All south facing windows, only one west but it’s covered by trees. I hope you love your new space!! Oh, my cat too tells me when it’s 4 pm, dinner time lol 😂 I’d never seen a Cuprea before finding one at our nursery, it’s INCREDIBLE. So pretty, the shine from red, blue, purple, green etc, I’m shook
I’d love for our cat to go outside too, but when we got her we were living in a mountainous area, lots of predators, now, next to a big highway. So no, she doesn’t go out, as much as she wants too, she has to stay in
25:52 maybe you could try adding some sphagnum moss to the aroid mix in the grow pole? Maybe you could lay it down the back towards the plastic part so the roots can get through the chunky part and get moisture from the moss?
I really like your new home Jan. You've made it 'homey' already! I really hope you come to a satisfactory solution for Brad soonest. Forgive my ignorance but will your plants be able to survive outdoors all year round? Lucky you!
Very nice home and the plant set up particularly the hanging of the plants on the fence in the patio area. Brilliant and very aesthetically pleasing! Keep up with your videos. They have great contents. 😊
I love your experimental approach. As a plant addict and gardener, I worry about failure; but we have to take risks in order to learn; it's inspiring. Thankyou for your content. Maybe you could share some of your knowledge for those of use in the northern hem 😅x Nic
New place looks excellent! I'm slightly jealous of your 2 courtyards..perhaps you put kitty in a harness with a long lead so he can go outside while you are caring for the plants..just a thought ☺️😺
I’m so glad you’ve settled in and your plants look healthy. 🙋🏼♀️🪴💚🐩
Thank you:)
Oh my gosh! I almost think your bathroom is the best and most creative plant room! (the wee rubber ducks ... ♥)
You have a lovely new home ,with lots of space for your beautiful plants to be displayed. Have you thought of getting the tracker for Brad so if he takes off you can always tell where he is.
Bravo for getting this done in very little time. Very organized and methodical. Lots of new avenues to explore with outside space. Worried about kitty. Maybe an invisible fence to keep him in the garden and out of harms way. Our little ones are so precious. Enjoy your new home and garden.
Honestly Jan I think it's for the best :D I;m really envious about your courtyards! I used to have one too in my previous apartment and I had my little veggie garden there. Now I live next to a busy street and with a very sunny balcony. All my veggies died :D I think the only thing I can grow there is some desert plants :D (Poland here)
Hi Jan! I'm 47 and only just got into plants this year (very late to the party I know!). The first Instagram account I followed was yours and you introduced me (via a video) to AJ at Growing Grounds. I've since visited her amazing greenhouse twice and bought a fair few beautiful plants. Thanks for the inspiration, especially love the longer videos. Wishing you all the best! PS: LOVE the alocasia tub idea, where did you find that large round white container. Bunnings? Looks amazing, conceptually brilliant! Again, thanks for the inspo!
Thank you :) i got it from this korean or japanese homeware store in chatswood. I don’t remember the name of the store sorry :/
@@sydneyplantguy Daiso!
My adansonii went fully white too (and btw, the light makes absolutely no difference at all, you're 100% right) and weird thing is, it started to grow some chlorophyll with I think the 4th fully white leaf. It went kind of mint-ish all of a sudden and then every leaf came out fully white and turned minty within 2-4 weeks.
I find with all my aroid poles filled with either fern fibre, aroid mix or coco chip don't need to stay constantly moist. They can dry out for short periods of time and the roots seem to be perfectly fine. I water mine about once a week - 1.5 weeks and they do dry out completely in between. Fernfibre is definitely the best in poles in my experience, it does hold moisture then longest and can dry out for longer periods of time and the roots still thrive in it. oh and it doesn't seem to become hydrophobic either! :)
Hi! We just installed Oscillot posts on top of our fence for a ratbag that never used to be interested in getting out. It's helped a lot and doesn't look terrible.
Plenty of other leaves to help the Queen and since you cut that leaf, it may just helped with the growth of the new leaf. 😊
Congratulations you deserve it. You are magnificent and with plants.😀
Thank you :)
So, you don't have freeze in the winter if you can grow tropical plants outside? I noticed you don't have hanging plants on your windows. I think few hanging pots can make the place less sterile. Nice place you've got. Outdoor space is definitely big plus. Space for tomatoes 🍅 Should definitely try some tomatoes😉 If there is no real winter you can have huge tomato vines. They are tropical plants too 🙂 and very esthetically pleasing and smell good. Also flowers. Just some ideas 🙂
As someone with a painfully small house, I'm enjoying seeing your smaller plants! I've been actively moving on a lot of my large vines because they are unsustainable, and focusing on things that have tiny leaves or grow into a small bush rather than vine. Now it's much easier to see the larger, statement plants that I've decided to keep. I'm definitely stealing the idea of putting all my Alocasia together in a tub. I've just turned their heat pad on for autumn/winter so that will make it easy to keep them on it all together :)
The only thing I have found that makes a difference with variegation is temperature. And this was specific to my epipremnums. The higher the temps they are in, the better the variegation. No other variegated plants I have seem to be affected by any conditions, light, humidity, feed, etc.
What a beautiful new apartement with gorgeous plants, btw big hug for a cute meow😍
Thanks :)
I have monstera small form which turns all white, but after 3 totally white leafs, it gave me recently well balanced 50/50 green/white leaf. So don't give up.
Thanks for showing us the new place! Those outdoor areas look like a godsend.
Good
Luck with getting it settled. I wish we could do outdoors like that over here in the UK.
On the moss pole experiments - i have been using your methods for about 3/4 of a year now (thankyou! Im having a ball!) - but the good new zealand moss over here is Really expensive. But its better than the live stuff, so i isw it anyway. Recently i have stated mixing it 50/50 with coco chunks - and its working well - stays moist as long as my just moss poles. And the moss meshes it all together so it doesn’t fall out of the grid - even in non plastic backed poles. And the moss stops the water going straight through the pole at watering time.
The idea came from your experiments .. so thanks again!
Good luck in that new apartment! Is it further away from AJs?
You did not disappoint with the plants outdoors and indoors! Love the magical garden! Look forward to watching it grow.
Thank you:)
I wonder how tedious it was moving 200 plants to a new location and arranging them? Now, this video answer what was in mind. ♥️

I love your channel because you have such huge plants. I love to watch those big green leaves 😍
Love your new place. I can see you like it too . Great new start. Congrats
Loved the video! Looking forward on how you transform your new place.
Thanks :)
New apartment looks great! What is the white rectangular container/pot next to your ikea cabinet? I really like the look.
Thanks :) it’s a ‘self watering’ pot (but i don’t use the self watering bit). I like to use them for my crawlers & have a specific video ok my crawling philo collection :)
Love your videos!
You can add some moss or tree fern fibre in the poles with the coco chips or aroid mix in it and it helps keep it moist for longer. It helps retain moisture and allows it to dry evenly. It also helps to really soak the coco chips for a few days before using them, so you don't need to water them every as it takes longer to dry out. Also, in south facing windows, a large garden mirror can help direct some light towards those windows to give them a bit more light.
You are going to see terrific growths with the plants outside! Hopefully it doesn't get too cold or get frost in winter where you are. I put a monstera outside after it nearly died with thrips inside and it grew like a weed outside.
I found your channel through the moving video. I love the long vids b/c I can put it on like a movie and get things done. I also appreciated the honesty about the Sydney rental market. So many influencers make their life look so charmed and easy, and your experience was more realistic.
Thank you :) transparency is the way to go!!
Wow 🤩 for your new home! And also a huge Wow to your yards! I would open my heart to extending the plants to the outdoors for sure! I am an outside girl
Love the updates especially the plants on the hooks outside. Hoping they all acclimate well. Congrats on the milestone and keep up the content. Hugs to Bradlez!
Thanks :)
You are so knowledgeable and have devised workable methods, I have become very curious about leaning more about you. Of course, you set the limit on that. But thumbs up!!
Thanks :)
Beautiful!!! So happy everything worked out. Thank you for sharing! 💙😁🌄🌿
Love the new place, you’ve done a great job turning it into a home! Glad you’re enjoying your new space! ❤
Thank you :)
Always learning something new on your channel - Had no clue that Xanthosoma Lindenii had been reclassified again! I appreciate you always making sure to use their proper scientific names and having their ID's on the screen. 💚
Thanks :)
Oooh looove the way you interspersed the hanging moss poles on the fence. Looks awesome
Thanks :)
So happy for you to enjoy your yards
I have a cat also, I put him on a leash in my backyard and it makes it easy for me and safe for him
It’s a win win for both of us
I live in the USA, in Iowa. I have just gotten a Monstera. Then I found your channel, and I love how you grow your Monstera, I have repotted it, and there were 5 baby monstera in the pot. I kept 3 plants and put them around a moss pole. The other 2 went to a friend. I plan to rotate the pot in a south window that has a big porch over it. I am in the northern hemisphere so the is a sunny place. I really love your new apartment and your outdoors area.
Thank you :)
Love your new place and the plant arrangements. I wonder: is the outdoor sun going to be too strong for philodendrons? When I take my aroids outside for summer here in Virginia US I put them under a shade cloth. And how will your plants do outside during the winter? They may be coming inside temporarily during wintertime. It’ll be interesting to follow your adjustments as you get used to your new location 😊
Your new place looks great!! Love your courtyards. I think the tropical plants outside is such a great vibe
Thanks :)
I get so much enjoyment from your videos, congrats on 100k and your new home!!! You make such amazing and valuable content. Thank you for sharing! ❤
Thank you :)
Hi! New viewer here! Your Manjula is stunning. I don't think I've ever seen one with such large and mature leaves! Makes me want to try taking some cuttings of mine and work it up a pole! Very beautiful ❤️
Thank you :)
Look into making your cat a "catio" you build them an enclosure that is up against a window ,you open the window and the cat goes outside in the protected space.. there's usually a cat tree or 2 in the catio . It will fix his need to get outside
Thanks Jan for another great video. You have done so well to keep us updated when you have had so much work to do. I am sure everyone appreciates the effort you put into your videos. 🤗
Thank you Greg :)
Nice work! And nice adaptability!!!! I also like it how you say your velvets have spider mites so nonchalantly! I just found MORE of the buggers on my splendid after spraying everything else and felt wayyyy more stressed than you sounded! 😂
There are always pests. The earlier u just accept them the easier of a time you’ll have with them :P
Love the idea of putting multiple pots in one 👍
Looks great! CONGRADS on 100k 🎉🌿
Thanks :)
Consider getting your cat a harness and put him on a leash outside. We see lots of cats (here in Thailand) on harnesses sitting outside during the day.
I tried before … he hates the harness but I’ve out an air tag on him :)
Are you from South Africa?
@@sydneyplantguy maybe he will get used to it over time? Ive had pets hate collars etc but after awhile they give in haha.
Your new apartment is beautiful, congratulations, hugs from Brazil ❤️❤️❤️😘
Having an outdoor space give you more options for your plants I’m excited how they will tribe on your new apartment
Thanks for the video your setting in well, I'm sure brad will explore but always come home
Congratulations on 100K! Much deserved 👍
Your new place is looking great. I am really enjoying the vlog type videos...keep them coming 💚
Thank you:)
First time watching you video the plants are gorgeous and healthy all your plants are beautiful beautiful
I am really your way to decorate indoor plants, thas is give me much inspiration to follow how to decorate room well.thanks so much
Thanks :)
Definitely enjoyed this video, wish there was more! Love your new space!!
Thank you :) definitely more to come :)
That manjula inspired me to get a moss pole! I’ll be trying it on my manjula My micans and my Brazil. We will see what happens
So inspiring 😻 Thank you for the informative as well as entertaining content. We will be attempting to emulate your moss poles on several of our young aroids. Our kitties can totally relate to Brad's courtyard dilemma. Dedicated supervised visits work best for us. Congratulations on 100k subs and the beautiful new apartment!
Thank you :)
You should get a kitty harness and leash for Brad! My cat adores the outdoors so I started walking around with her on a leash and she loves it ^_^ it took a while for her to get used to the harness and leash but I'm sure she'd say it's worth it!
You have made your new home wonderful! :D (Maybe clean the wood-fence outside with vinegar - were its "green" ?so that the fungus there dont interfere with your plants in a bad way or somethin :)
Love,love your new courtyards!
It is monstera peru... The leaves will get the holes when they grow big... I hve few of them that already big n they hve big leaves with holes...
You seem at home! Love the new space & look fwd to seeing you, brad & plants grow. Thanks for sharing jan!
Thanks :)
I love your videos, Brad, and your plant collection. Thank you for sharing your experiences, it helps me so much when doing my research as well. I am a fan for life, without you my plant journey would be so different, and I love where it’s going now. 💚 thank you for all the work you do, it has to be so time consuming, and I appreciate your work!
Thank you :)
Glad your new apartment is working out! I know you are not a meter person, but I found it interesting and useful information. I’m basically in similar situation as you, with my main living area having North and West facing windows. I couldn’t figure out why some plants were not thriving in what I thought was very bright, indirect light. Again, similar to your back wall that the sun touches for a few hours. Psych! The par meter actually showed the PPFD was incredibly low. Moving just 1-2 feet over doubled the light, but that didn’t work for me. I’m an aesthetic guy myself, so it needs to look good and be able to grow good match. Meters don’t run me, but the information is helpful. I can use my real life results and compare them with “the charts”. Growing is an art, not an absolute hobby. I appreciate your information and you’ve opened up my journey tremendously.
Fully understand where you are coming from, it’s probably a good tool to use for oneself but I don’t want to talk about it online because some might take one of my meter readings (on a dark cloudy day in winter) and take it out of context and wonder why it doesn’t work for them … to me it’s all about letting the plant tell the story :)
Your bathroom shelf is so gorgeous! The humidity in your bathroom is so good for your finicky babies.
Love the new place and how much you have done with it, the convenience of the courtyards is awesome. The vittarifolium looks great in the bathroom, perfect place with the light and humidity. Congrats !
Thanks :)!
I admire your attitude regarding the new apartment/lighting conditions. As a side note, some time back I started incorporating "the proof is in the pudding" in presentations I give. It really does head off some negativity 😆
Thanks :)
Well done Jan👏👏👏 was always going to look great cause it’s you so I didn’t have any doubts about that 😉
Hope that Brad settle’s and the itch to get outside and jump the fence fades, which I’m sure he will he loves being with you 🥰
And I’m sure I’ve already said but, Congratulations on the 100k looks like your on the way to the next milestone. 🌱💚
Thank you :)
Looks so amazing in your courtyard. Beautiful place to relax with gorgeous plants to adore. What temperatures do you get in winter? I live in south Florida and do have a couple philodendron in my landscape. The climbers aren't allowed they would be adhered to the house. Appreciate you.
Thanks :) it can go down to about 6 degrees celcius here so some of them might struggle out there :P
Love the new place! Thank you for sharing the entire process! i get the space problem. I live in a studio apt with one window and 23 pendant grow lights. I had to get pretty creative to make them look part of the decor. Awesome you can have plants outside and in the bathroom! ❤🌿
Thank you !! 23!! that's a lot :D good on you
Love all the plants but the bathroom shelf display is awesome!
Thanks :)
Loved the story of all the things that went wrong with your queen anthurium - when you chopped off that battered leaf haha 😅 made me feel a lot better about all the tattered leaves in my collection!
Thank you for sharing. I had to resist skipping to see if there was an outdoor part. I use coco chips with a bit of perlite for Hoya and experimenting with other aroids (in the pot). I can’t top water only, eventually I have to bottom water/soak until all the chips sponge up the water. Chips have great wicking ability with a reservoir. I do love the results I get with chip only or chip mixes. Not sure how to engineer a successful pole. If there’s a way I’m sure you will figure it out! Your space is such an oasis!
Bottom watering just isn’t really an option for poles :/ ideally i’d spray it frequently to keep the coco chips moist but that is a lot of work :P thanks :)
Hi, congrats on your move. I'm writing in regard to the mother grow lights: I know you have a relationship w the company, so I'm hoping you relay this message: I noticed your issue w the lamp's height. I like the Mother Lights and see they paid much attention to design and sustainability. Yet, I haven't bought them due to the height issue. If they had an adjustable height base, they would be perfect. I wouldn't mind paying the extra cost of this feature. But for the price of these lights, to additionally have to buy a table that increases the space the lights occupy, defeats the purpose and hinders the aesthetic intention of the Mother lamp.
Once more, I congratulate you on your new home. Moves are never easy, and you seem to have done it excellently.
Hai delle piante stupende , meravigliose !! Bravissimo 👏🏼👏🏼
Its three weeks for my in new apartment and I am still not settled in 😂😅
Maybe a collar with gps app in case he ever does escape? Love the channel/collection- so many ideas for mine! Thanks and good luck!
