Argh, yeah, aren't blowies just about the worst thing about summer though? I can put up with everything else - the 40+ degree heat (in Celsius; that's about 104++ Fahrenheit), the insane UV, the sandstorms - but the blowflies, yeah, you bet I wear that hat all the time outside.

I looked up 2 separate sites, as I was sure cork hats had been around for decades as I remember them as child in the 1960s.
      * Early English settlers wore hats to keep cool and corks, light, jiggly and prevalent (thanks to rum being a popular tipple), were added to keep flies away - and also keep hands free.
*The exact origin of the cork hat remains unclear, but its emergence likely coincides with the rise of European exploration and settlement in Australia during the 18th and 19th centuries.

It’s also why we have signs saying “Road subject to flooding. Indicators show depth.” & why we have the indicators (white posts with a line every 10 x 20 cm & “1 M” marked. If you can’t see the indicators, it’s well over a metre deep.

The modern day cork hat is just a rough almost string net mesh 1cm opening that hang down over your wide brimmed hat about 10-15cm but does NOT go to you neck. I bought the whole family them when camping in Busselton WA. We counted 35 flys sitting on my face over the wrap around glasses. It works so well that you can eat beneath it. It’s elasticed around the head so you can roll it up and place it over the head band when not in use and you pull it down to use it. And that is why you don’t see the cork hats any more! Just brilliant for hiking or camping! NSW in Oz (Bloody hard to describe so just search “AOS COTTON FLY VEIL HEAD NET 1 UNIT”)

So you have to watch out after rain storms.

Such a fracas attracts birds (and fishermen) to the site of the carnage, except when Choppers go into a feeding frenzy they bite at anything moving.

I live in Melbourne AUSTRAIA and I know that SYDNEY people often don't like we VICS and or Melbournians. Most of the plants and animals and fish are introduced species. Apart for Kangaroos , Marsupials and the like.

Swagman hats with corks have been around for donkey's years but I think the younger generations that grew up in the 2000s haven't been introduced to them. You are more likely only to come across them in souvenir shops.
