The worst is that there are several functions that work in club management, that should be the same in international management, but they just aren't implemented for some reason.
Imagine a universe where FM had a massive upgrade to the international management, and a complete graphical overhaul to about FIFA 15 level 3D graphics. And they had a massive advertising campaign surrounding the World Cup. They could have made an impression on so many potential new customers! They could have worked with Sky Sports and FOX to do something like simulate results as advertisement of the game. But instead they release FM22 with a decent, but flawed, upgrade to the match engine and some fun ambient music for top European club tournaments.
@@basti2955 I don't deny that, logistically it's a nightmare collating all that data, I'm sure but please bear in mind that team researchers (scouts) are volunteers and not paid. They do it for the love of football and their love of FM. I'm sure nobody would begrudge paying for a yearly roster update if the incremental improvements SI call Headline Features were released as patches.
true but it's really tough to market, the game is close to being as good as it can be, other than a giant graphics update etc, so they have to try and sell any small improvement or showing data in a different way, its a very hard gamme to market, although they do still mmake plenty of mistakes
@@LokiDokiGG Again, it's difficult to argue with your points but I can't help feeling that we are only being sold the illusion of immersion, that (other than the match engine improvements) the headline features lack imagination or innovation. At the risk of bringing upon me the wrath of the FM Gatekeepers, I'd like to see new (and old) gameplay modes added: Maybe a career mode for new players, beginning as an under 18s manager possibly, learning the complexities of FM over the course of a couple of seasons; FM Touch as a play mode for players who love the core of the game but don't appreciate the time involved in playing it; the return of Challenge Mode; a "Reality" mode in which your CEO makes decisions about ground and facility improvements, appoints backroom staff and allows you to use your own finances to fund coaching courses, hell, maybe an unscrupulous owner could even sell or hire players without your approval.... Maybe FM's biggest challenge is that they don't really have an actual challenge, there is nothing else comparable on the market, they have no real competition to drive innovation and risk taking. Maybe SI are just too comfortable, or maybe they just lack imagination. I'm not asking SI to reinvent the wheel, I just want them to make it better.
I wish the different supporter types would give different/different types of objectives and how important they are is determined by how much of the fan base is made up of that supporter type. So like casuals may want you to sign a high reputation player, fair weather fans want you to win something, I wish their was a hipster type and to satisfy them you need to sign/play a young player from another continent or something like that.
The issues with Football Manager games are a lot of the changes they make feel like they’re done so it seems like they’re doing something, but often they’re things that don’t need changing at all eg - removing the squad depth screen. A lot of the bigger issues have been issues for a while - set pieces screen, international management being irrelevant, fan relevancy/stadiums & the inaccuracy of the finances tab are never touched. The fact they don’t touch these areas don’t fill me with confidence that they’ll be addressed in the FM23 or even FM24.
I really think the lack of communication is what hurts, we don’t know what to expect, when to expect it and why or why not… I’m sure internally they have a development roadmap, and with what they’ve added in FM23 I think they surely must have seen it’s a version only having light changes. I would really like to formally hear about what’s in the works for future iterations
I've been playing this game on and off since the first one when it was called championship manager in 1992. The basic mechanics of the game really haven't changed much since then. It would be nice for them to take a risk one year and just do a proper revamp of the game.
Totally agree with you re. the lack of immersion in the stadium surrounds; why is every car park always empty, apart from six burger vans and an ambulance or three? Does no-one drive to matches anymore? And as for the trees... FM23 looks ok, as did FM22, but for me FM21 gives me all I need so I will be sticking with that version.
My biggest issue with every FM for recent years is they seem to overcomplicate absolutely everything. I just am really desperate for a UI simplification / overhaul. The Squad Planner thing, it's just a more complicated version of the Squad View from last year. The Supporter Profile thing, what's the difference between Fair Weather / Casual & Family / Core - just more info than we need. That sums up SI really. Add info nobody uses and never fix basic bugs that have been in the game for a decade. The Manager Timeline thing is pointless - again, more info than we need and does nothing different to the Manager Screen that is already there - and with simlified info! Just compare Scouting to a few generations ago, it's SO complicated. I dread to think how new players could get into this game.
13:53 that comment did not age well. Great video btw just going to get back into fm after a good 10 years away and being a Burnley fan that made me chuckle haha
great stuff and I think you nailed it pretty much spot on about fm23 - SI doesn't really have to improve though because they don't really have any competition so they can suck at marketing and build in basically what you could do in Excel (squad planner) and call it "next level". It's really a joke but every year I keep buying so I guess fool me once... :)
200+ hours here to, and yes the positioning of defenders and trajectory of the players are from another planet. Tried to watch some matches in comprehensive highlights and I could see some weird stuff with all the players on the fields, like defenders getting the ball on a second ball after a corner, with a bad touch but no one around them, they just leave the ball and sprint back to the defence, even the players closest to the ball ( from my team or the other ) take some time to react to thatOn one occasion, in that "second ball bas touch" situation, I counted 9 players rushing to the ball after my WB made a bad touch, so the picture was pretty funny, 9 guys rushing the ball and the WB rushing away from it as fast as he can. For the Gk, yeah looks fine on the line but when they start to get up on the field a little, some very very weird shits happen. I could make a big list, each day I see something funny in the ME, my guess for now, get some average/good BPD, put 2 or 3 AF and enjoy the show ! =D
I really hope that they're working heavily on the Match Engine and that's the reason why the stadiums do still look iffy. My suspicion is that, ever since women football has been announced they're trying to make it work as good as possible and that means the ME needs a revamp that, come think of it, the core of it has been untouched for a good number of editions. Once that comes out, I think we'll get improvements of everything that seemed they're not able to improve now (but hey, the animations they added to players, especially GK, are here and now and I hope they keep adding those until it's time for a big switch)
Recently had a game where the 2nd tier walkways leading into the stadium looked like there was something moving very fast just through the doorways.... it was the scenery behind the stadium. The current match I'm in shows it off even worse. There isn't even a graphic behind the doorway.
I think the match engine is improved, nice animations, the way the players miss control is more realistic. They just need to iron out the defensive issues.
I got sacked not meeting fan's expectations. I think ti was a bug though. I had a board meeting where I had to explain myself for not meeting the board's expectations where I managed to convince them to give me 5 games to save my job. A few days later I had the exact same meeting, only this time for failing to meet the fan's demands, but whe I followed the same course of responses, I only had "reject" for the options instead of the "yes, please give me 5 games to save my job", presumably because I had made that promise a few days ago? Strange one
i had the fans on my back while on the beta, i was Bursaspor, promoted in season 1, under transfer embargo, i was an F for transfers, as soon as i started losing some games i was gone
I will say I've seen some smaller stadiums looking like smaller stadiums this year. Grounds with just one stand and just grass elsewhere rather than stands looking like they hold 20k when the ground is supposed to hold 2k. Seems better for that than FM22.
Only thing i would like to see is real big leap in ME making it core feature. Witj tactical changes having real visible consequences in match. What I really loved is EU cups presentation which is wow :)
I’ve got fm23 touch on iPad this year and works amazingly for myself due to flexibility of being able to play anywhere. I’ve played the game since champ manager days with the Jimmy saville lookalike on front of a red box if I remember correctly! Anyone else on iPad touch this year? I understand it costs £4.99 a month but I’m happy to pay due to it working for me as always in go and can play at work home and also on the road obviously not while driving 🤣
I can see why you're rating it a 7/10, because it's still a decent game. But let's be honest, are those the actual main features for this year? If so, that can not be anything other than disappointing. I hope we will see some big improvements to the match engine (more immersive match days) and the day-to-day managerial shenanigans in the next iteration of FM.
I agree with a lot of that. I think I'm lucky that I don't see the defensive issues so much in my save. I did see them in beta with Salisbury. I think there is a lot there that smellsof the graphics engine not representing player movement perfectly. I don't believe SI actually made any ME changes after beta. I think they made some changes to GK animations but the big change they had planned to defending caused bigger issues elsewhere. I read the forums a lot. You might say some people aren't happy. 🤣 The match engine is better. I also find the game tougher this year. A good team facing teams with a very low block is considerably more painful for the good team. The squad planner is pointless because it is too detached from the squad screen. The fact that it has no changeable columns is poor. It needed to be merged into the squad screen. There also needed to be options to do things such as add your own ratings or notes to a player. The draws are too long though I wondered if they changed something because my Hungarian 3rd Rd cup draw was the old FM22 draws. With Salisbury my FA Cup 2nd qual Rd draw would have taken about 2 hours if I'd let it. Grade sorting was an issue last year until fixed, I believe. Social stuff needs a vast improvement. I spoke to a player who had poor form despite scoring a tap in he couldnt miss in one game. He told he he'd played well. 1 7.5 and 4 6s doesn't mean that but the game doesn't see it. What is really needed is a little more transparency and communication from SI. For me, FM will always be good. It's the same game at heart and it's the hours of value for money that make the game good. That won't change but I'd happily accept the game having a year with no big features but just a year to polish all the components. But SI rary say enough. The forums are a mess. Many of the gripes are unconstructive and often rude but I can understand that people don't believe they see enough communication. The fact that Miles sits on twitter boasting games managed and his awful manager image is bad. He seems to engage on the game once a year for the features video. Im enjoying the game, even if I can't get MTK Budapest to play well as massive favourites often. Players with egos. I do think a lot of the game needs polish rather than a year of substandard features. Get old features working before adding significant new.
My pet peeve is how inconsistent and fickle the football feels this year, seemingly mostly hinging on whether you're playing home or away. Its realistic of course, but the futility of watching your defenders be legumes is the singularly most frustrating thing in the universe
I am late I know. I have seen my players getting hit in the back of the head by a pass a lot. And defenders block a lot of shots and the ball goes in a nice curve straight to the GK, almost every time. Has me screaming at the screen.
The planner would be great for international management I used it for one season then because it resets itself after each season even though you’ve set it up for the next two season it just makes it completely pointless
The only thing I dont like is the dissapearence of sound.. You can no longer hear a player strike a ball anymore.. You cant even hear the ball when it strikes the crossbow.
The squad planner craps out and goes blank after 4-5 seasons, also board not allowing stadium expansions, even though i apparently have 130,000 supporters on the waiting list for season tickets
I actually really rate the supporters thingy. They know FM is a roleplaying kind of game so its not about how useful something is, its the feeling that the world is actually moving and changing and the more they do to make the game feel real that way, the better for me. Of course its really basic but its a start and it should be acknowledged.
It costs too much. No way I'm buying this every year. They concentrate too much on bollocks that no one really cares about. They should get the basics right. Real drama from the board and fans like in real life. Nothing happens. I just ignore 75% of the game, set my team up and play the matches. It's the only interesting thing. That should be where they concentrate, not f***ING social media and crap. No one gives a toss about that. I played the demo of 2023. That was enough.
They could make major changes, but they'd need a proper and longer development cycle, and then release a new FM, rather than glorified database updates for 40quid a year. And that's why they won't ever make any real improvements and changes. The path of least resistance is making them plenty of money.
So for some reason my first comment disappeared. So yeah the squad planner is a downgrade. Top 5 each position irrespective of role? Gone. Ability and Potential irrespective of role for position? Gone. So roles are almost forced. Seeing all your players for a certain position? Gone. (Need to manually ad). Some of the info in the original overview now also takes multiple clicks to get. Also so far it does not seem to matter who you select to give you their opinion. So as someone who used the squad overview a lot it is terrible and indeed would have been better in international management. Only plus is self sorting and projected future ability. For me -5/10. For the super casuals 3/10 maybe.
I feel this fm is to easy never thought I'd say that I took Blackpool from championship to title winners in three seasons, I've been playing fm for years and never had a save go so well 🤣🤣
Squad planner stinks. I used to like the depth chart option, and that seems to be gone. You can look at the planner in 'full squad view', but it still isn't the same. If I'm being stupid and folks know how to access the old depth chart view (your entire team based on current or potential ability, in positions), let me know.
The squad planner also does not include any players that you may have in on trial either. You'd think that these players were brought in in order to be assessed for suitabiltiy for your team and should therefore be included.
The defensive play was crap in FM 20 and has gotten worse. I'm pretty sure making the defense crappier was how they got the long ball attack to work some. I really can't get past the defenders misreading the ball worse than 10-year olds, defending with your back to the ball, and GKs being 5 yards out of position. I also don't see why they wouldn't make international management at least passable for the World Cup. They have to know it was horribly implemented, much like Set Pieces.
This game makes me want to sell my PC, if i had a physical copy of the game i would break it in half, i literally feel like crying as i type this comment. 😥 When i interact with the players and see the players injuries that just "happens" to inflict your A-team i´ve just mentioned something, is it others that manages the team or me? A tip for those that have not played this game yet, don´t let the fake interface fool you into thinking there´s a sensible engine underneath the hood, Football Madness 2023.
At times, your thoughts are so simliar to mine, it's like you're inside my head. Just you, Jesus, Ronald McDonald, and Al Bundy. I though 7/10 was a bit generous though. I'm leaning more toward a 6. Apart from the match engine team, the rest of SI just "walked it in". (Just like Theo Walcott). Your end point about marketing just caps it all off. It's like there is no accountability for poor work at SI???
The World Cup is so toxic that it was too dangerous for SI to focus on it. They literally avoided stepping on a nuclear landmine, the 3D View update is a hidden update that has no impact on winning or losing matches, so for buyers we are paying 60$ for a database upgrade with some visual bling bling, so they start off bad, a WC focused PR would have just piled on to the bad press.
I have to disagree about the match engine. This year it's just plain awful. And fact they did not update it at all from reports from Beta is unreal to me. And this is something they admitted on forums. Every game there is horrible mistakes made by players of highest quality. Players will outright ignore players and if you have an AMC. Good job you won FM! AMs attract the entire defense so much so that if you have a good striker he will go 1 on 1 with keeper. Who will then promptly fall on the floor around 1-3 seconds earlier then what he should and be on his a** before a shot is even taken leaving your goal wide open. Animation's are great but game as a whole is worst iteration of FM in 3-4 years. Improvements are minimal and down right insulting. This game should not have been it's release price. It should have been 10 quid because that is how much value it added on FM22. Which on its own was FM21.5 with few improvements. If I'd give the game the rating 0-5 I'd would have been a 1 and that is because game itself functions. Waste of money this year. But great video as always Loki.
I've stopped buying FM. It's just the same game over and over and over. Nothing really changes. The graphics are shocking, the AI generated faces are a complete joke in 2023, the match engine is clunky (although it sounds slightly better)
Yeah.. not changing anything related to international managing is so weird... still can wrap my head around it
Nobody plays it, so they don’t want to improve it, but it’s crap so nobody plays it…
An open goal miss

The squad planner craps out and goes blank after 4-5 seasons, also board not allowing stadium expansions, even though i apparently have 130,000 supporters on the waiting list for season tickets
game Devs are just ripping ppl off..basically paying for the same game over and over for years
The lack of international changes is mad. They haven't changed this in years.
I actually really rate the supporters thingy. They know FM is a roleplaying kind of game so its not about how useful something is, its the feeling that the world is actually moving and changing and the more they do to make the game feel real that way, the better for me. Of course its really basic but its a start and it should be acknowledged.
"As long as your winning I'm happy" clearly not been watching Tottenham this season oof
My daughter has just started watching me play this and she's loving my las Palmas journey she's massively into red velvet cake 🍰
Are you starting a journey min any time soon?
i will probably do a journeyman once the Portugese save is done
They could make major changes, but they'd need a proper and longer development cycle, and then release a new FM, rather than glorified database updates for 40quid a year.
And that's why they won't ever make any real improvements and changes. The path of least resistance is making them plenty of money.
Carrot Cake. Cream Cheese icing. Hands down.
For the super casuals 3/10 maybe.
i have seen the giant football !
BATTENBERG! 🍰
This was such a lazy 'update' let's be honest
I feel this fm is to easy never thought I'd say that I took Blackpool from championship to title winners in three seasons, I've been playing fm for years and never had a save go so well 🤣🤣
Very generous I love cake
Squad planner stinks. I used to like the depth chart option, and that seems to be gone. You can look at the planner in 'full squad view', but it still isn't the same. If I'm being stupid and folks know how to access the old depth chart view (your entire team based on current or potential ability, in positions), let me know.
Here here. Like let's make squad overview better and then remove a lot. Bleh bleh bleh.
The squad planner also does not include any players that you may have in on trial either. You'd think that these players were brought in in order to be assessed for suitabiltiy for your team and should therefore be included.
Love me some portuguese cookie cake
With 375 hours in FM23 I can say "its alright"
The defensive play was crap in FM 20 and has gotten worse. I'm pretty sure making the defense crappier was how they got the long ball attack to work some. I really can't get past the defenders misreading the ball worse than 10-year olds, defending with your back to the ball, and GKs being 5 yards out of position.
I also don't see why they wouldn't make international management at least passable for the World Cup. They have to know it was horribly implemented, much like Set Pieces.
This game makes me want to sell my PC, if i had a physical copy of the game i would break it in half, i literally feel like crying as i type this comment. 😥
When i interact with the players and see the players injuries that just "happens" to inflict your A-team i´ve just mentioned something, is it others that manages the team or me?
A tip for those that have not played this game yet, don´t let the fake interface fool you into thinking there´s a sensible engine underneath the hood, Football Madness 2023.
Squad Planner is the most useless thing in the new game. I don't use it... at all!
This is so tru. When will we get a good game again!? No more good games out
2 minutes in: More platforms... As far as I know PS5 users still did not receive the game :D justSIthings
I've stopped buying FM. It's just the same game over and over and over. Nothing really changes. The graphics are shocking, the AI generated faces are a complete joke in 2023, the match engine is clunky (although it sounds slightly better)
Worst version of FM since it was created. This and FM 22 are abominations.
Yes if the board care about the fans, and your supporter confidence is low, the board can summon you to discuss your future at the club.
