  • All the Synology NAS info for 2020-2021 We Know nascompares.co...
Of all the companies in the industry of network-attached storage, few are as secretive as Synology. Whether you are an in the industry of network appliances and storage, the in-house IT guy, or a professional consumer (prosumer) who is just in the market for a new piece of kit, finding out information on the latest hardware and software releases from Synology NAS can often be rather difficult. I have been covering pretty much any and all new releases from Synology NAS for a few years now and although they are always rather secretive at the best of times, things are especially oblique in this latest generation of 2020 and 2021 range. There are lots of reasons for this, ranging from their brand's own elusive reputation to share information till the last moment, to the impact of natural disasters in the east and world spreads of Convid-19 having an impact on manufacturers as they either preemptively close/lower staff numbers, or are in areas of a large impact. So, today I wanted to run down everything we know about the software and hardware that we know is coming for 2020/2021 in the Synology portfolio, as well as update as much as I can as time goes on.

Thanks, this was helpful. My almost seven year old DS213+ died yesterday, so I got a DS218+ two hours ago and now it's running here fine with my old migrated drives inside. I was a little worried for my data, but it worked out fine. My two WD Red 2 TB drives still seems to be in good condition, which maybe is impressive for so many years. :)

Hi Jimmy, I realize this a 2 year old comment but thought I'd see if you're still around, I have just bought a DS218+ and the same as you taking 2 drives from a old DS213+ I'm hesitant to try the migration process as Synology says it's not possible for the DS213+ so just wondering how you got on with yours considering your DS213+ was dead ?

    • @jimboswe
      @jimboswe 3 года назад +1

@@epicmovies1080 I'm still around! :) As I wrote, I just moved my drives and it worked fine and it's still going strong without any problems. Not sure why Synology would say that it's not possible. The only thing I can think of is if the firmware versions of today have updated and created some gap between the old and new hardware that would make this impossible. But that seems like a dumb thing to do to your loyal customers...

Thank you soooo much! My old DS1517+ with all my documents and pictures (5TB) from my whole life was on that and no I didn't have a external or cloud backup (I do now together with a UPS!) The migration from a DS1517+ to a DS1522+ was successful. Thank you again!!!

If used Hyper Backup to back up to the Cloud on the old NAS, will Hyper Backup on the new NAS work seamlessly? Or will you need to do the backup process all over again?

Great video. Quick question. I’ve seen a few videos on moving drives to migrate to a new NAS but if I just want to buy a new NAS including new drives to replace an existing NAS is there a straight forward method or is it just to copy all data and rebuild the configuration? Thanks. Joe

Great video. Worked like a charm...until I tried navigating to the new drive. Synology Assistance reported 'verification failed / error code 384' when attempting to map stations from DS to windows explorer on a laptop. After much googling, I found that you have to change the SMB-settings on the DS if you were using SMB 1 on the old NAS prior to moving the drives since Windows 10 no longer supports it. Strangely, I didn't have a problem with it previously.

Thank you for the video. Will the upgraded NAS adopt the exact same numerical IP address the prior NAS was using when a migration is done. Or would you have to save the DSM settings of the prior NAS and import that setting file to the new NAS to create that. My synology 213 NAS hosts a website, which uses the servers IP address as the underlying URL.

You already have the answer 2 years later but no, you just static it to be the same ip as the old, also you really should be using a DNS server so you don't have to have things tied to ip only and utilize cnames or DNS names

Hello, Great videos and information. Need some clarification. In the case of migrating (physically moving) functional drives from an older RS815+ to the newer RS2423+. Would I be correct in assuming that the drives (coming from a Synology NAS) will not be listed as "unverified" in the new RS2423+ ?.. This applies to new drives that are not on the Synology compatible or incompatible list correct ??? Synology really needs to fix this whole "unverified" mess

I tried this, but unfortumaly the external connection trough my own domain, didn't work anymore, which I didn't expect to happpen, because I was migrating from the 220+ to the 920+, so i thougt that since they are from the same year, that the migration should work like a charm. To reach it, I always had to insert the port number manualy, and I couldn't figure out what the issue was. At the end I had to reset the DSM because I was not able to solve the problem.

Hi, I hope you can help me. I have a DS920+ with 3 inserted disks. The third one it's a basic raid because I only have TV shows in there for my NAS, but I want to hard reset ny NAS and format disk 1 and 2 to and then start over to start a SHR, of coursei will do this without the third disk inserted. My question is. After I did all that how do I insert the disk and see all the info I have on that disk?

  • @Aleziss

1:30 that is EXACTLY what happened to me, my 415+ just died and the only other in hand solution I have is to use a 411+II which is a risc in two way, first, the 411+II certainly do not run on the same DSM as the 415+ thus make data at risc while trying to migrate and two, I am not sure what will happend with the 411+II drives when I remove the 415+ drives and reinstall the original drives in the 411+II... backup your things, otherwhise, you'll be stuck like me at a high risc of losing all data... personal nas are far from being a valuable solution to keep data safe without having to back it up to another nas which is starting to get reall really expensive... at the cost of the potential data lost value...

Just a question: will this also work when you migrate to a NAS that has a newer version of DSM? I current am still on the old 6.4 version (for several reasons) and the NAS I intend to migrate to probably has the newer DSM 7.x version. I was wondering if the DSM is also migrated and does not conflict with the DSM already on the new NAS.

Great Video. My DS213J has a Network failure and I could not retrieve anything. I have taken my 2 HDDs (mirroring) out but I did not pay attention to the primary and secondary.
Now I want to buy either same model from a friend or a more recent one.. What is the consequences in not knowing what HDD was the primary from the secondary HDD in the bay? How can I know which one is the primary?
btw, I did a Network reset, I hope it did not touch my data... I am getting a bit anxious about that. Can you delete any data (such as pictures of your kids) just pressing the reset button on your Synology?
Many thanks in advance to all for your answers :)

I have a question about migrating my data from my old Synology NAS to a new one. My old unit is a
DS1815+, it has 2 Samsung 250Gb SSDs for read and write cache and 6 Western Digital 6 TB Pro Red
Drives that I have in an SHR1 setup and this is “total volume”. I have purchased a DS 1821+ and I want
To migrate my data over to it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my old unit it works perfectly
    Fine.
The reason I chose a newer unit is because I can have read and write cache without having to take up
Drive bays. The new DS1821+ allows you to have SSDs and have the use of all your drive bays for extra
    Drives.
The DS 1815+ has an Intel quad core processor while the DS1821+ uses an AMD Ryzen processor, I not
sure, if this will be a problem this is one of the reasons, I am writing you.
My question is, Can I migrate my data over to the new unit and if so, what is the correct way of doing this? I have new Synology SSDs for the new unit, and I am not sure if I need to migrate all the drives to the new unit including the old SSDs or just install all the HDDS. I am a bit confused as to how to go about correctly migrating the data over. I have a ton of photos, music, movies, and videos that I do not want to lose. I spent over 4 years working on my movie collection and I really do not want to start that project over again. Any help that you can give me on this process would greatly be appreciated.
Sorry for the long message but I wanted to give you as much information as I could to get help with this issue.
    Thanks!

Thanks. Very helpful video. I have a DS1515+ that just died. Won't power on at all. I pulled off the cover to look at the power supply, to see if any wires were frayed. Before pulling off the cover, I removed the drives. Being the idiot that I am, I didn't label the drives. I think I had it configured for RAID6. TheRealRoof yes is possible, you have to upload/save a full backup of your old NAS to your new NAS over network using hyper backup. Than on the new NAS use this backup to restore. You need twice as much space disk of courses. If you old NAS are not so old you can install a Synology beta tool to make migrating. My old NAS was to old and don’t support this future 😜. Let me know if this was helpful.
