Never liked New Wave. Some decent one-hit-wonders but the overall vibe was too disaffected and brittle. Not much talent was required to either write or play it either. (Rush/Yes geek)
This is my 14 y.o.+ period. The perception of Billy Joel among the plebes (us) when he first started catching on was that he landed somewhere between true rock and mainstream rock.
He eventually drifted all the way to mainstream and has been thought of as that since.

This was Billy’s tribute to 50’s rock n roll. He references many things that were hip & happening then especially the fashions sidewinders tab collars & sharkskin jackets. Many bands in the 70’s admitted to influences from fifties. Now many singers are borrowing from the eighties. What goes around comes back around. Peace brother!

I joke that my first memory was hearing Piano Man in the womb, making me a Billy fan since before I was born. Was, is, and will always be my favorite artist.
Thanks, Jamel. Always fun watching with you.

Listening to this song in the 80's 90's and 00's it sounds like he's singing about that era's type of new wave sound. Very cool!

This was a major ear worm when it came out. It didn’t sound like anything else on the radio and was really catchy and quotable. It was one of those songs that helped define the year.

Maller...my wife and I saw Billy Joel and Elton John back around 1999. They toured together, it was called The Piano Man Tour. Saw them once at the Palace of Auburn Hills ( where the Pistons play) and I think the other time was at the Silver Dome. They played for nearly 5 hrs, INCREDIBLE CONCERTS!
Cheers Mate, keep the music alive brother!

This is classic Billy joel at the height of his powers. His band was as important to his sound as Billy himself back in the day before he broke the band up around 1990.

The one and only concert I attended was Elton John and Billy Joel, back in 1994, Atlanta. What a great experience! Everyone was nice, crowd was polite and well-behaved. At the mid point of the concert Elton started doing Billy's songs and Billy did Elton's songs. Worth every penny for the nose-bleed seats, too.

A couple years ago Billy was on a late night tv show where he listed *his* choices for his top five favorite songs.
    1. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.
    2. She's Right on Time.
    3. You May Be Right.
    4. And So It Goes.
    5. Vienna.
I'd love to see you react to any or all of those. I'm partial to 1, 4, and 5.

Got to see Billy Joel back in the 90s when he was touring with Elton John. It was at the Pontiac Silverdome (RIP) and we were in the nose bleeds. We were so far back, Elton John was just a pink dot. Billy was dressed in black, so I didn't know he was there until he started singing. 😂 I'm guessing that there were over 4 thousand people in the Dome that night. And every last one of them sang the chorus to 'Piano Man'. Pure magic. 🥰
