Wish I knew about this back in the day. There was a point between ages 21-24 where I was literally lifting more weight every single workout. I felt unstoppable. Then I hit a wall and plateaued and just couldn't get over. Instead of taking a step back, I just pushed harder and harder. My form started to suffer and I ended up hurting myself (torn rotator, bulging discs, tendonitis all over). That kept me out of the gym for a few years. Now I'm 37 and the way I train is much smarter, partly due to people such as yourself.

Haven’t lost the motivation, far from it. I would feel like shit when I didn’t workout and couldn’t wait to get back in the next day. Gonna take it easy for a week and take the 20% de-load week advice. It’s just kinda shocking how everything was going so great and then bam, your body says nope, you had enough. I’m guessing the adrenal glands need a serious reboot.

I do like John's explanation of things.
I don't do bodybuilding, I do bodyweight and boxing training, and I've been really going for it for 7 months, but I got a signal from my body this week, in 2 parts:
    1. I felt angry - emotional - for no reason before my workout. Sometimes I have to work myself up to get motivated, but I never feel angry about it
    2. Afterwards I had no appetite. That is quite unusual
So I took a deload week this week.
I'm pretty sure I got it right, I pushed myself until something wasn't quite right, then I paid attention.
I'm sure I could have pushed through it, but something didn't seem right.

Best possible things you could do is
    1. Take a 1 week to a month off
    2. My favorite is going light-mid weight and sets are much shorter focusing on form and pumps, and no failure reps or sets so your CNS can cruise control and recover while not losing or barley strength when coming back to do mid-heavy weights

Great advice 🌟 I’ve been training hard for a good few months now and have been progressing like nothing I’ve seen before, both in strength and size. But last weekend I woke up and just did not want to move. Hard training coupled with a very physical job has finally taken its toll, and it’s such a crossroads when you love training but just can’t physically go for it! The motivation is there but the strength isn’t
My biggest anxiety has been losing my progress, however one step back and two forward 😎 and over the long term nothing will be lost! Just got to keep active and allow it to pass 😁

A few months ago I hit this. I was in the final 3-4 weeks of my program, doing my heaviest sets and I just dreaded going to the gym. I’d force myself to go, and after 1 heavy set I just felt exhausted. Putting weights on the bar and taking them off again was exhausting. I thought I was getting sick because I was just tired and exhausted all the time. My strength was depleting drastically, I’m talking like my 1RM on bench was 20lbs down from my 1RM Bench at the start of my program.
Once I finished that last month I felt accomplished enough that I just took 2 weeks off. Did a lot of walking and stretching and cheated on my diet a bit. Now I feel like a fucking tank and seeing strength gains again. No shame in giving your body a rest when you need it.

Some great advice on deload! I've fiddled around with those deload structures for strength athletes with mixed results, and I've also come to the conclusion that strength protocols don't transfer over all that well. Oh, and if I remember most of those studies come from track athletes, if I remember zoudos correctly, so there's a huge question of applicability to strength training, let alone physique.

So many things can be off when you are bordering over training. like John says sleep is a big one, libido, loss of appetite, weird things like sensitivity to light in extreme cases. these are serious signs that our body gives us to let us know it's time to back off for a bit. I learned the hard way of deloading myself. Although I'm more of a calisthenics guy, to me the need for deloads isn't all that different from bodybuilding in my opinion. After doing German Volume Training for 14 weeks when I was supposed to be doing it at a maximum of 6 weeks, I began to experience crappy mood swings, tiredness, slight loss of motivation, sleep loss, and worst of all, shoulder pain. The shoulder pain was the straw that broke the camel's back for me and when I went to talk to my mom who's a caretaker for old people, she demanded me to back off of training despite the results I got from it. It was then I had to swallow my pride and take the entire week off of training. I'm almost halfway through my deload week right now and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. My sleep's getting better, I'm no longer getting depressed, and my shoulder is feeling healthier by the day.
This goes to show how important deload weeks are. But when to take a deload can vary from person to person. How to take a deload week though is entirely up to the individual.

@@ritabanbhattacharya9038 Good on ya, bro. Although I still do calisthenics, I've been doing some weightlifting for my legs (primarily) and mid-delts. Mid-delt exercises is treated more as an accessory for me.

As I was training for nearly 4 times a week for 10 weeks straight, for the last 2 weeks there was no progress in terms of strength and gainz... I didn't go to gym for 10 days and when I went to the gym again, my strength was higher and gainz start to build up again... Deload guys, it really works...
