Oddware: Packintell anti-gravity trackball & Tandy 1000RLX

  • A Packintell trackball from 1989 that has nothing to do with Packard Bell or Intel, and a Tandy 1000 that is an XT-class 286, unlike IBM's XT-286, which despite its name is actually an AT-class machine. Are you confused yet?

packintell made a lot of stuff, like printers toners keyboard mouse, among other things.
i could not find a link to a company site, only various listings of different products from packintell for sale.
only clue i could find is this quote on a wiki page,
Packintell keyboard refers to a keyboard manufactured or commissioned by KME, on behalf of S.B.I. Computer Products Inc., branded as Packintell Electronics, USA.

Kinda weird that it had the same failure as that keyboard trackball (which I still have). I'd like to think its a driver issue, but I don't recall the trackball on that machine sending anything over the serial port at all when you moved the ball. I would try sniffing the serial output of this and see if its sending any motion commands. The MS mouse protocol runs at 1200baud. Something like Windows Terminal should work fine.

I hope you don't mind that I pipe in: yes, I use trackballs almost exclusively, have done so since around 1993~94. It all started soon after I got my Amiga 1200, and quickly developed "mouse elbow" (AKA Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI in my elbow) so I found a trackball that was compatible with the Amiga. It brought be so much relief in my elbow that I decided to stick to that type of controller. In 1998 I got my first PC for christmas, and immediately bought a Logitech trackball for the PC. I reckon that I've worn out 6 PC trackballs since then. I have only used Logitech trackballs since my first PC one. In total I have used 4 different models. Oh by the way, I mentioned that I had worn out a number of TBs, by which I mean that after extended use the button switches start malfunctioning and eventually stop functioning entirely, at which point it's time to replace the device.
