I performed a lip-synch / dance performance to this song at a talent show when I was in 8th grade. I dressed all in black, made a set of white shoulder-pads out of poster-board, and made my own piano/keytar, complete with a leather strap and painted-on keys, out of 3/4" plywood. (It looked more like an artist's palette, but it did the job.) I got a nice ovation, and the highlight of my junior high school life was that the HOTTEST 9th grade cheerleader, Stephanie Angevine, signed my yearbook that year and complimented me on my performance. She said, "I liked your talent show thingy." As a 5 foot 1, 145 pound butterball, I thought..."I'm gonna MARRY that girl!!!"
Incredible when you hear these early Devo tracks and you think its a drum machine but its not, its the human metronome, Alan Myers! RIP to Bob and Alan. Long live SPUDS and DEVO!
True. Unfortunately, none of them are actually playing the instruments in that video. No cords, and of course, Casale playing *chords* on an SH-101. Nope. :)
+MrCarl220 man he killed himself over that shit, if he only live to see the Millennium..... He paved the way for the modern "preformer". Amazing how they had so much back Lash in the 80s and now it's commonplace to lip sync. I know he was embarrassed, but he didn't deserve to die
This tune is so irresistible! Why does this sound so good?! I've listened to this song at least 400 times and I'm still not tired of it! By the way, Mark Mothersbaugh's hip thrusts are AWESOME!!! Screw the haters.
You mean, screw those who see its appeal to that part of human nature that is so empirically verifiable and yet (therefore) is most intellectually resisted?
What new and old fans need to do is every so often just listen to the albums and realize how damn good the songs were . They weren't doing all the visual stuff because they were covering for a lack of writing and playing skills. It was a way to supplement it. They are a top notch rock band
Never has there been a band who delivered an orchestrated performance as well as Devo. They developed a theme and stuck with it all the way through. De-evolution.I bow down to the spud boys. Fantastic. In the purest sense of the word. You won't see the likes of them again. Eleven out of ten.
Great band...they were VERY cool ....the general public didn't get them, but the cool people did....everyone who knows what good music is loves devo...
I'm seeing them for the very last time this Saturday night! So effing Psyched. Then New Order on Wednesday 11/15 and ECHO and the Bunnymen on 11/20. Life be good.💯
People can say what they want about Devo but they were a huge part of the changing music scene at that time & they made a name for themselves whether people want to admit that or not...
DEVO's charisma has always been cleverly cloaked under a veneer of 'nerdism'... These guys had the world punk'd then and now. I've been binge watching footage of DEVO recently and I am convinced that aliens abducted their drummer and implanted an atomic clock in his brain. On time, every time... RIP Alan
Bold and broad strokes, innovation with courage and charisma, ultra hip and refreshing, a truely iconic part of music culture and history of music in general.
The whole set-up, the thought. We think that someone of the four is going to step up to the microphone and then the fifth comes down the ladder with his own. Magic!
I watched this when it originally aired. I'm pretty sure Mark had an interview segment with Letterman. I remember Dave joking about the white shoulder piece and Mark flipped the piece upside down and said you can use it as a portable snack tray!
:D this is how you rock n roll "robotic style". plus I love it when they have their own choreography. Mr. Mark Mothersbaugh busting those moves! Awesome. Wish I was born in the 70's. I could have seen/heard them earlier. Long live the 80's.
It's been decades my friend. Still waiting to see if the other great fave band The Cars will get inducted. Sometimes the RnR HoF is just bollocks. Never explored this side of the 80s.
Yes, this seems a very rare instance of the b'hoys performing on national teevee -- and about the only instrument that was plugged in and real was Mark's microphone. Watch Bob 2's playing and note that they rarely (if ever) used those keyboards in actual live performances. He is, as always, a good actor though. Creepy -- this was the beginning of the end for them -- but there are some interesting interviews floating around out there of this very visit to NYC. diligent spud will find 'em.

He also said to me, "If we are around thirty years from now, look me up and see if I wrong." Mark was (and remains) a prophet of sorts. Besides all that, Leonard and Sheldon like this song.

Devo and the B-52's are such fun original bands.
University Bands.
Both should be in the RnR Hall.
The Monkees too!
Put Devo in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! They really deserve it -- lots of unique, brilliant, and catchy music.
I agree they should get the nod....... But its far more important to put rap groups in there........ eye roll
Bill Hay Dont worry the Hall of Fame is meaningless bollocks anyway

Agree. Talking heads too, their early stuff was brilliant. Later stuff ? Hmmm.

DEVO + David Letterman = winner.
So many many great musical moments on his show
So far ahead of their time.
Alan was a Beast on the skins!
Alan and Bob, we miss our brothers.
Unlock that ancient voice
When they came out I was about 12yrs old, they seemed like they were from the future. I'm now 53 and that still seems true.
Back then, they were doing their Duty Now for the Future.
Nobody understood Devo back then, but a lot of people get them now. I love these guys.
I got it from the first time I saw them
Muchos incluso muy lejos los amamos y entendimos en esos años… ellos adelantaron la DEV evolución del ser humano en manos de la tecnología
Not true if they were not popular they wouldn't have kept the recording contract so long at Warner Brothers
They blew NWA out of the water.
High IQ spuds understood them.😊
How could anyone no like Devo?
Humorless people generally did not "get" DEVO.
Their loss.
