Devo is a prime example of an overlooked band from this era. To the broad public they were only known for "Whip It" (which in my mind is far from one of their betters songs) and they weren't "commercially viable" enough to become more than just a cult band.
To get a clue what happened during the mid 80's listen to Dead Kennedy's "MTV-Get off the air!". Not saying all the commercial bands of the 80's were bad but a lot got way more airtime than they deserved for their talent.

Yes, this seems a very rare instance of the b'hoys performing on national teevee -- and about the only instrument that was plugged in and real was Mark's microphone. Watch Bob 2's playing and note that they rarely (if ever) used those keyboards in actual live performances. He is, as always, a good actor though.
Creepy -- this was the beginning of the end for them -- but there are some interesting interviews floating around out there of this very visit to NYC. diligent spud will find 'em.

I performed a lip-synch / dance performance to this song at a talent show when I was in 8th grade. I dressed all in black, made a set of white shoulder-pads out of poster-board, and made my own piano/keytar, complete with a leather strap and painted-on keys, out of 3/4" plywood. (It looked more like an artist's palette, but it did the job.) I got a nice ovation, and the highlight of my junior high school life was that the HOTTEST 9th grade cheerleader, Stephanie Angevine, signed my yearbook that year and complimented me on my performance. She said, "I liked your talent show thingy." As a 5 foot 1, 145 pound butterball, I thought..."I'm gonna MARRY that girl!!!"

So that's a ROLAND SH-101 He is "playing". It was my very first synthesizer and it's monophonic meaning it does not play chords so there is no way in hell this was not lip synced or pre recorded....it also did not have MIDI so anything you programmed in would eventually skip a beat and screw your entire song up if you were recording .

What new and old fans need to do is every so often just listen to the albums and realize how damn good the songs were . They weren't doing all the visual stuff because they were covering for a lack of writing and playing skills. It was a way to supplement it. They are a top notch rock band

I asked Mark about the origin of the band's name. Mark told me that humankind was de-evoluting and that things were going to break down. He also said to me, "If we are around thirty years from now, look me up and see if I wrong." Mark was (and remains) a prophet of sorts. Besides all that, Leonard and Sheldon like this song.

James Parsons Duncker They were students at Kent State when the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students during a protest. That's when devolution began for them.
BTW, those shootings were the inspiration for another song called "Ohio", by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

Last best album imo. It's a shame they couldn't have stayed more artsy and Avant garde like the first 2 albums.

I haven't seen everything that man has ever created but I have seen Devo and although my first degree is in science I know that there must be a God because THAT thing called Devo cant happen by accident in a random universe that makes no sense. Purest art man can make - live sound and visual with a backstory.
