It's really weird isn't it. When it came out I was aware of it but never actively listened to it, just had it on in the background when someone stuck it on, yet... I remember a whole lot of the lyrics and most of the music. It's a sign there was a lot more to it from a pop-music angle (and I really don't mean that in a derogatory way) than most gave them credit for at the time.

Linkin Park's first two albums are hands down responsible for introducing metal to larger audience during time when hip hop and rap completely taken over the radio stations.

  • @EyeShotFirst
    @EyeShotFirst 2 года назад +178

Those first 2 Linkin Park albums were so massive when they came out. I remember being floored by the production, the songs, and the power of Chester's vocals. It was the last time I remember new rock music being a big exciting thing on radio. I never really dug much that they did from Minutes to Midnight onward, though there were some good songs, I just feel like the thing that I loved them for was gone, and that was that revolutionary production those first 2 albums had. It's like they devolved from their peak of musicianship. Most bands work up to albums like those.

thats how it was for me as well. im a big lamb of god fan and when Mark Morton came out with his solo album he had a song featuring Chester on vocals. Cross off is the track and in an interview with mark, he stated that Chester wanted to get back into the the harder rock that they came from. Cross off was one of the last, if not the last tracks that Chester recorded. If you havent heard it you should check it out, its a damn good track and Chester is phenomenal as usual. He passed before they could film the music video for it.

The "PING" overdub on the kick reminds me of a blacksmith's hammer striking an anvil. The song is about someone being forged by an abusive person and finally finding the strength to stand up to them. Every "PING" is like another awful abusive thing they had to go through until they finally found the strength to push back. The "PING" is like the only silver lining of any abusive relationship - you hurt me but at least now I know what abuse looks like so I can be prepared if it ever happens again.
I was in high school when this album dropped. I remember most people saying it was "boo hoo my dad is mean" cringe. Linkin Park were masters of their craft long before they ever released Hybrid Theory.

What a great band and such a shame that Chester went through what he did behind the scenes. You've hit a couple off their first (great) major album now, but if you ever circle back to them and move on to others, you should definitely check out Lying From You from Meteora... It's almost two songs in one between Mike and Chester's sections, along with a MONSTER breakdown towards the end!!

Although I lost interest in Linkin Park after their second album Meteora, I still rock out to them. I love the way they mixed electronic/DJ type sound into a rockin melody... Oh, and the deep bass hits. IMHO Meteora was their "Black" Album . It was good , just not like the first album.... I got to see Chester in a band called "Grey Daze" play at the grand opening of the first Guitar Center in Arizona. They were more Grunge/Pop/Punk back then. They were pretty good, but I'm glad Chester joined Linkin Park. Double up Please !!! JR & LH -Ho's Down!!

Hybrid Theory came out when I was in 6th grade and was all anyone was listening to. I also remember the shift that happened once I reached high school. It was my first week of 9th grade and this really attractive older girl looked down at my shirt and said "Still listen to Linkin Park, huh?" Times were different back then. Actually it would be interesting if you could listen some of their newer stuff, maybe something from a thousand suns.

Great choice as always! and I guess it wouldn't be sooo bad if we have to 2 videos in a day, twist our arms, Geebz, haha. And maybe you could record a handful of videos but don't release them right away, trickle them out while you're sidelined from surgery!

Finn from Punk Rock MBA!! I'm a big fan of his breakdowns and the like.
As soon as I saw his 'Pop Punk with Breakdowns' shirt, I knew I had to have it.

I'm glad you got that '' signature sound '', I agree. I remember listing to meteora for the first time. I was about 10 years old. After the intro came '' don't stay '' I remember exactly how I felt and was blown away ...

I have a feeling it inspired a part of Bloodywood's Aaj too: ruclips.net/video/kgvH6tX4Ej0/видео.html - almost the same - the rest of Aaj has its own merits though and I love that track so much. The whole band exudes the kind of metal we appreciated in Linkin Park and others from the era, but with Indian instrumentation on top providing something fresh for the our current ears to feel something unique yet familiar.

The LP nostalgia is so real
Not to mention the second this came on I went full hyphy and start singing the 99 problems remix.............
Speaking of which, Geebz, LP did a mashup album with Jay-Z, pretty sweet, worth a vid if you're feelin it some day
If you havin girl problems I feel bad for you son..............

This album is one that stands the test of time for me. I still love it just as much as when it first came out. Definitely the best nu-metal album BY FAR.
Thank you so much for doing this one Geebz!

This is awesome to watch, I hope one day you check out “waiting for the end” one of their best songs and I’m sure you would be able to provide some really good insight into it.

I'm glad you caught the 808 sample over the kick on the one. Alot of bands add this in post to start a breakdown riff to just make it explode. Another great review!
