"karl vs steve - all the insults" is also hilarious, it's mostly karl absolutely destroying steve

Part of the idea was if there was a charge for bags then people would bring their own instead of paying for them and fewer bags would need to be made in the first place. It inconveniences the impromptu shopper but even someone as disorganised as me can usually remember my own bags if I know I’m going shopping. Usually.

It's law here so I guess the government get money as tax for environmental projects, but they only sell the big bags for life now. Minor point, but oxygen is a consequence of life, not a precursor. It would disappear from the atmosphere pretty quickly, except it’s emitted constantly by the plants and algae around the world.

But yeah if you're in the jungle etc, they'd definitely discourage you from improvising with leaves, since there's every chance they could be poisonous, and there are a lot of blood vessels very close to the surface in that general area. So toilet paper conservation would be a thing. And yes you want a clean behind to help prevent tracking methods such as dogs. Actually to avoid this issue, snipers in the British army, who may have to remain in the same place for a few days to get a brief window of opportunity on a target, I believe have a specific ration pack that is quite binding, so they don't need to defecate, or to reduce the likelihood, during that time. Basically the opposite of laxatives.

I've had that issue buying a bed in the past to be honest. I didn't have a bed, it was shown with a mattress, it was advertised with a mattress, didn't specify it doesn't come with a mattress, and the cost of it, I assumed it would have a cheap crappy mattress with it.
I never knew about this separate bed and frame issue until the first time I saw this podcast! I empathise with Karl; it is a surprise for a customer to discover that they get only the frame. On the few occasions that I bought a bed (one of them was around the time this podcast was recorded), both bed and frame arrived. The beds were bought from a well-known department store. My dad had 5 broken VCRs in a stack with a brand new one on top making #6, when I asked why he still had the 5 broken ones he said he intended to fix them. What is so entertaining about this show for me is that there is a sort of Laurel and Hardy dynamic between them. Ricky and Stephen are Oliver Hardy whereas Karl is Stan Laurel. It's generally implied that Stan Laurel is the clueless fool but in truth Oliver Hardy is the biggest fool (often due to his assumption that he is always right).
BTW, I think the idea regarding charging for carrier bags is to dissuade shoppers from just chucking bags away. (That was a boring comment weren't it?) Now instead of the seas and rivers being full of carriers you have to wade through them at home. If you have a carrier bag drawer at home you may be doing the right thing as some conspiracy theorists believe that when the financial systems collapse carrier bags will be used as legal tender. Luckily the TV show QI rectifies a lot of ignorance, debunks old wives tales and things some bloke told someone in a pub. You can eat after or even while swimming. Chewing gum doesn't stay inside you for seven years. Human urine doesn't work for jellyfish stings. Butchers don't sell beef curtains.
How do they stop you moving on a different day. Would they call the cops if they saw you moving on a Tuesday. Can't be enforceable. Or the seller keeps the keys until you've moved in. Seems a breakable rule.

What I don't understand is why they don't just make the bags out of something biodegradable, so that they're not harmful to the environment. There's no way a few pence is gonna be enough to deter people from littering with them.

In later series they really chop down more and more on Karl.
What I don't understand is why they don't just make the bags out of something biodegradable, so that they're not harmful to the environment. There's no way a few pence is gonna be enough to deter people from littering with them.
