All else being equal, in lighter winds, the boats that displace less water have an advantage since they will have less hydrodynamic drag. So the sailors who weigh less have an advantage. But in heavy winds, when significant hiking-out is needed to keep the boat upright, sailors who weigh more can have an advantage since keeping the boat more upright on the upwind legs gives them more VMG upwind, and this speed advantage upwind surpasses any hydrodynamic drag advantage the lighter sailors have.
This is awesome, I’m currently learning how to sail
I'm trying to learn the wind part to wing foil. :)
A heavier boat can be faster?
