    Love the video and the Gospel presentation. I am sixty years-old, sailed once when I was 21. Just bought a used Sunfish, trailer, and extra hull for $250. I want to make a termporary dredge platform for our pond with the two hulls. Also want to take up sailing on our nearby lake.

    Love the message, but there’s quite a bit of incorrect info in this video. The soft hull is not just as fast. When you find a hull that’s spider cracked and flexible, it’s not going to be nearly as fast especially not in waves. The wire bridal on the back with the loop, the one’s without the loop are legit as well. No one who races clips it to the loop in the middle, you tie it to the bridal so it can slide from side to side. 1 tip for your mainsheet block to keep it from pulling out is to always threw bolt it and use a backer piece of aluminum or large washers to keep it from pulling out. That is not an after market bailer. It’s the new style one that comes with all the newer boats. I think they started doing that in the 80’s. The porthole in the back was put there because the rudder fitting isn’t original. That style of rudder didn’t come on that year of boat. The pin’s that lock the rudder on, tent to bend. Be careful that it’s straight. It won’t go on well.

    FYI, Sunfish earlier than 1972 or 73 had the serial numbers on a metal plate attached to the forward bulkhead of the cockpit and they often go missing. I have a '71 that I rehabbed and there's no serial number. Fortunately, I don't need to register it where I am moving to.

    • @creativerepairing2960

      Hi Joy, I would recommend using fiberglass resin with cloth to repair any cracks or holes. Take a look at my other video "
      How to Repair a Rotten Door Frame Threshold With Bondo and Fiberglass" to learn how to work with fiberglass. In the situation with the sunfish don't put any bondo under the fiberglass like we did to repair the door jam but rather if cosmetics are important then a thin bondo layer can be used to smooth out a fiberglassed repair area. Fiberglass with cloth is used for strength while bondo is used to smooth a surface to hide cosmetic imperfections. The video I referenced above with show you how to work with both products. Both products are available at Homedepot or Lowes. I would love to see a picture if you can send one through this comment thread. Thanks

    • @creativerepairing2960
      @creativerepairing2960  4 года назад

      Hi Audrey, Thanks for the comment. Corroding usually happens by using the boat in a salt water environment. When salt water gets in the inside of the mast for boom it will destroy the aluminum from the inside out. Best way to combat it is the rinse the inside of the aluminum like we show in the video. Hope that helps. In our area craigslist and Facebook marketplace are the two biggest sites for finding a sunfish.

    Thanks for the very useful video. It seems you are in Florida, with your observations about corrosion from salt water. So I'm concerned about boating with alligators there! I'm thinking of going to Florida and doing some Sunfish sailing, but as a newbie to the boat and the state, I'm a little worried about capsizing and being a tasty snack. Same thing with avoiding swimming. Any tips from any tropical RUclipsrs? Common sense advice? Reassurance? I know enough to leave the gators the heck alone if I see them, and to respect them as wild creatures. Thanks in advance.

    • @creativerepairing2960
      @creativerepairing2960  Год назад +1

      Gators are typically fresh water reptiles. Not a big problem down here. Most urban lakes don't have any. Usually they are in river systems or lakes attached to a river system. I wouldn't suggest swimming at night but during the day I don't think it is a problem. You would probably be a greater risk driving in your car to get here than getting bit by a gator.

      Thanks, as for the sail try ebay or a guy in Orlando Fl area sells new ones on Offerup.com for $175. I never had to by a new one, but have used the family sewing machine to sew many repairs on ours. Also have used the "sail tape" you can buy at West Marine to make patches.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach 4 года назад +2

      Frank Marnell I don’t know what the damage is, but I second the use of sail tape if possible. I patch a couple smaller holes in mine. I also had a sail clip on the boom that was ripped out. I was able to replace it with a piece of webbing for reinforcement and a cheap grommet kit.

    Would this be a good option for a solo skiff build?

    • @creativerepairing2960
      @creativerepairing2960  3 года назад +1

      I have seen several CL ads where someone converted on into a small solo skiff and put a transom and small outboard motor on it. While I never road on one like that I might assume since the bottom of the hull has a curve to it (rocker) it would make it perform strange if it was propelled with any amount of horse power. It would probably get a little squirrely if it was on a full plane. A Carolina Skiff has a lot flatter bottom.

    People have told me that they've purchased a Sunfish hull (hull only) for little money. But they don't realize that the parts to get it sail ready will cost them quite a bit. Rudder and tiller assemblies alone run upwards of $300, let alone the spars, daggerboard, sails, etc. It's best to buy a complete boat to start with. Complete used boats in sailing condition are the way to go.

    One statement that is incorrect, not all Sunfish sailboats have a HIN number on the transom. I've sailed these since the 1950's. I currently own a 1959 in near perfect original condition. The hull identification number is on a metal plate riveted behind the front splash, it is 5 digits. Thanks for the otherwise informative video!
