Hey Nav Nation! I wanted to post this awesome discussion again as one complete conversation due to the technical problems we experienced in the stream. Now you can listen or watch in one complete video! Hope you enjoy!
I recently made a video that was me just being raw and honest about some issues in the community. I can appreciate those that are willing to be transparent!
When I first saw the price attached to the break he was promoting I just thought to myself that it was too much and moved along. The desire for controversy and hot takes has made me withdraw to my community because a large portion of people don’t care about the hobby, they care about the attention they get. To be fair unlisted leaf has millions of subscribers and the shout out buying packs from him has more value than buying packs from someone like me.
True. But the expectations were high for those purchasing the break. Not saying that the death threats were justified at all. If that is what happened…. As much as I really like watching Pokémon content creators some of them are out of touch with people that just want to collect or play the game. I can see where the reaction to Ando may scare people who make a living creating content. I think when there is scarcity the crazies come out. I think we also have to acknowledge the negatives of social media on mental health.
When you are running a business you have to have a certain degree of discretion about which partnerships you take up that could potentially affect the Goodwill of your brand. Whilst i do not condone the threats he received in any terms. putting aside the fallout and moral judgement it was not a smart business move from unlisted leaf to lend his name to this break, or at the very least he should have perhaps exercised much more creative control over the event before even remotely agreeing to it. He essentially undervalued his own brand (it cannot have been financially worth it even if it had gone well for how little he got) and misread the mood of his user base. Basically knowing when to turn something down is an option that should not be glossed over
The scam part was the fact that he marketed the opening as him doing it himself when in reality it was not. So yes, I'd argue that's a pretty clear bait-and-switch. Nobody deserves death threats EVER, but this was clearly misleading at the very least and he deserved to be accountable for that.
And, by the way, when you put yourself out there as an influencer, you expose yourself to criticism. Nobody is immune from that, and doubly so when you're a RUclipsr with substantial influence + way more impact than a random commenter. It's literally your job to engage with an audience, and I'm sorry that 100% of the feedback isn't going to be positive. It's part of the job.
I agree with the market comments… unfortunately we don’t live in a society that understands economics….I think Ando got involved with something that he regrets… I think once again you and your guests are looking at Pokémon from more as an investor/influencer perspective… it seems that your guests really want to have people see it from their perspective and I think that is great but is it possible that the people behind the stock x / unlisted leaf scandal did not have the hobby’s interest at heart…. The coffee breakers that handled the break didn’t seem to care… and I think that what many people are outraged at.
I think we can all agree that the cancel culture is wrong to target Hendo here. This being said, I don’t like how you just completely dismissed the other factors in this though. This was originally being sold as a pack break BY Unlisted Leaf, people were then happy to pay the premium, he then later said on another video after people purchased the break that he wasn’t opening them and they would simply be on a stream with Hendo watching the Stock X stream. The Stock X guys also handled the pack opening quite poorly. This is one of the main factors in this whole issue and you guys just completely dismissed / ignored and instead talk for 30+ minutes about how if he wants to charge huge prices he can (which is fine) which just genuinely left a sour note watching this whole video.

Catching up cuz I missed most of chat last night. Went live during family time/bed time for the little one.

Appreciate it my friend! 🙏

Look forward to you launching your own Pokémon dedicated convention in AZ. Very doable and big opportunity
We’re going to try and make it happen brother!
