You'll never understand the significance and the impact of the Beatles if you don't appreciate where popular music was in 1962 when they started out, and where they left it in 1970 when they broke up, after being at the forefront of musical innovation and development. The advances made in the those eight years is phenomenal, and will never be rivalled.

Good catch on the piano solo… most people think “harpsichord.” But it was their producer, George Martin, who played the piano at half speed an octave lower, then sped it up to get the effect you hear. The Beatles were absolutely amazing, and somehow managed to end up with a producer who was trained in classical music who then could arrange strings and horns to take their music to the next level. No McCartney, no Beatles. No Lennon, no Beatles. No Harrison, no Beatles. No Starr (Starkey), no Beatles. And no George Martin, no Beatles. If I could have you listen to just one album, it would have to be Abbey Road… the culmination of their massive talent. But oh, what you’d miss by only listening to the one.

Good info on the middle 8 solo, originally it was to have been an electric piano but was discounted to what is on record today. There's an original version 'out there' which does feature the electric piano, if you can find it and listen to it, it's understandable why they kept the George Martin solo.

Starting with the Rubber Soul album (and continuing until the end), the Beatles were always open to experimenting with different instruments, different genres and - as Paul has said - happy accidents. (He has said they never ignored an accident.) Their producer, George Martin, who had worked with all kinds of recording artists from classical to jazz to whatever, was also integral to the process. He came up with effects that the technology didn't exist for yet but that the Beatles heard in their heads and wanted to replicate. It was an amazing creative partnership among the five - the whole was indeed greater than the sum of its parts.

Funny you say there were no synthesizers because while it is a real harpsichord it’s done with studio effects on the recording.
George Martin played the part, but couldn’t get it to sound clean at that speed, so he recorded it half speed and then added it back to the mix at double speed to get the sound he wanted.
It sounds simple but is nearly impossible to play clean at the recording tempo.

It's not a harpsichord...it's piano recorded but sped up to sound like a harpsichord....George Martin played the piano in Baroque style.

I don't think you have heard a real harpsichord if you thought this piano solo sounded like one. A harpsichord sounds much more 'metallic'.

When it came to The Beatles, we listened to the entire albums. The pacing of their songs was part of the whole experience. This was there to bring the soft reflection; deceptively simply beautiful and deeply touching. It's one to hold in your heart when you know you have a special person in your life, or wish to God you had. Thanks again, BP.

To write a 2 minute piece of music with that much substance is really unbelievable. The way it makes one feel in terms of the nostalgic reminiscing, to the beauty of the harmonies in the melody and the lyrics, and it's only 2 minutes. It's a masterpiece a timeless one

Length of the music is approx 2 minutes... Composed by Lennon and McCartney. I believe Lennon had the lyrics and that took a day or two, then McCartney helped finish the melody between the start and finish probably a few weeks. The recording session was rather fast as well.

When you listen to the words, so simple and yet so powerful. They had that intangible something that touched our lives. They were "in the pocket" at the same time as the rest of the world. They got us and we got them. They were "our family". Those not around then can't understand. They weren't just an Elvis, Michael Jackson etc they were in everything we heard, saw, wore, talked about. There will never be another like them. We held and hold them with "affection". Whilst being so cool, they also allowed the world to see their vulnerability. As they used to say "Beatles Forever"

And ended up sounding like a harpsichord. Absolutely brilliant. If you do this album, it's important to listen to both the UK release and the US release. There are some of the same songs on both, but also different songs on both. I prefer the US lineup, but it is missing Nowhere Man, which is one of their best. The UK release is missing It's Only Love and I've Just Seen a Face, which are 2 of their best, and were on the UK release of Help!

The Beatles were a rock band before they were anything else. They experimented with loads of different types of music but they never forgot their roots. You have to listen to their covers of rock songs from the early days and then stuff like "I'm Down", "She's A Woman", "Back in the USSR", "Helter Skelter", "Get Back", and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". To get a great idea of what they could do if you're going to start with only one album, choose Revolver from 1966. It's in the middle of their time together and almost sounds like a greatest hits album on its own.

John sang this song, and this album needs to be listened to in completely. Don't miss a single cut on his evolutionary Beatles album. This is where the changes started in their works! I believe it was 1965 and was the sixth album released in their history. They stopped being just another boy band with this one Black Pegasus. Sorry, but even the Hollies, Kinks and Who get left behind but not forgotten! Geez, that was 59 years ago and I'm still doing the same things. Am I in a rut? This was a nice choice of tunes today Robert thank you much for the memories!
