So glad to hear that! Meat substitutes are usually more expensive and usually not as healthy either, whole foods are healthiest and usually cheaper too! Let me know if you need any other help Traychelle, or any other videos that you would find helpful.
There are a lot of meals that you can make that no one will know are vegan. Curry, butternut squash soup, dahl, some pizzas, pasta, and a lot of things you already make and eat and even more could be vegan with a little tweak. I was primarily an ovo/lacto vegetarian(I ate eggs and milk) and that might be an easier gateway to vegan.
Sample some meatless options like soyrizo , tofu , morning star products , using seasonings and sauces jazz up vegetables so you don't feel you are missing anything oh and try vegan mayo a spoonful for a cream taste can make a huge difference in your cooking .
Gracie M My son, who is not vegan told me about "What the Health" on Netflix. Two days later I became vegan I have never enjoyed cooking until now! I use Pinterest often for great recipes. I intend to stretch my golden years as far as I can with vegan !!!
on the frozen veggies, get the non steamble bags, steamer bags are 12 oz and regular are 16oz, just an example of how to get a little bit more for your dollar
i know it might sound funny but we always give potatoes the "smell test" before we buy. you'll know if they're not good with one sniff. good ones smell kind of like dirt... bad ones? like death. helps even if you don't *see* a bad one.
@@M00NdaYn Geez, when I used to live with my mom we once forgot we still hat potatoes in the drawer. It smelled horrid and we looked for weeks whats off until we figured :'x

It's expensive if you buy whole natural foods. I went vegan and I don't eat processed foods. I spend a lot of money for that but it's worth it. I'm trying to cure my body naturally. I have endometriosis and I don't wanna have another surgery.
I love Aldi's! I get chips, bagged spinach, canned beans, vegan cornbread stuffing (you can't get that anywhere else), salsa, hummus, avocados, and so much more. Thanks for this!! Yeh you can definitely eat cheap vegan!!

@Susan Dyar No offense but I believe the anti can sentiment is purely common sense. You want to take a metal can, expose it to heat along its journey, have it sit around when metal can naturally decay, have it exposed to acid by foods like tomatoes, and then say that canned foods are.....fine?
Just FYI I buy pinto beans in bulk and you can make refried beans for pennies. Last fall I bought 50 pounds of dry pinto beans for $18.00, I did have to buy a small amount of 10 pounds just last week for $4.00 I know that won't last until fall but it's still cheaper than canned and I know exactly what's in them. I've been thinking about buying some rice in bulk to save money. : )
No Egg Craig super easy in crockpot! I put in 2 pounds with water, cook overnight on high, drain most of the water (save the rest to add as needed), add salt, pepper, cumin, and garlic then use immersion blender to whip it up. It gets super creamy!
I plan to do a full week this week coming. I have done a few vegan days, and did well other than a few mistakes. (Eating something I thought was vegan and wasn't. Did you know baked bbq chips have chicken and milk in them???? I need to read labels better!) But I felt good on those days and am looking forward to the upcoming week.

So, I am transitioning to vegan, and last week at Aldi, I KID YOU NOT, I bought those lard-free refried beans and tortillas thinking "they're cheap, why not buy 2?" 😂😂
Hey Craig, When making dry beans. I cook the whole bag at one time. Then I portion them. Using 2 cups of beans per portion, in ziptop bags and store in the freezer. I use them just like I would canned beans. Makes it quick to use anytime and don't have to boil beans every time.
No Egg Craig he was for a year, then met a girl that wasn't and he started eating S.A.D again, which upsets me but all I can do is keep cooking plant based (our 4 year anniversary is this month!) and hope he'll come back... he still likes tofu and my vegan spaghetti.
Thankyou, as new vegans we are finding out new ideas almost every day it seems. In the UK, our Aldi looks slightly different to yours but close enough to make your ideas usable for us. go vegan and nobody gets hurt
Dried beans CAN be a convenience food. Just takes some planning. I commonly cook up multiple types (in different Crock pots) in multiple pounds worth, once soft, I drain, and decant into 2 cup increments (roughly the amount in a prepared can of beans) into a baggie and freeze flat. Once frozen, you can move store them as desired within the freezer, just the flat square shape makes them take up very little room. No salt and no garbage either in the home prepared beans.

LOVE Aldi! I rarely shop anywhere else, but we travel full time and when I can't shop there I am LOST. We just did an Aldi Haul video a few weeks ago when they had their avocados for $.26. I got a bunch and froze them at that price. Did you try the vegan hot dogs they just had a couple weeks ago? They were actually really good! We aren't vegans (yet), but we are working week by week on becoming more plant based in our diet. We have five children (all boys) and they eat a LOT, but we eat for $400 or less per month for all seven of us...thanks to Aldi!
I didn't try that actually, but that sounds really good haha, and .$26 avos!? That's a steal! I would have done the same haha. What made you guys want to make the switch?

Well, first started thinking about it when I started having some really funky health issues last fall. Symptoms were pointing toward autoimmune disorders and the more I got looking into it I realized that most naturally minded physicians recommended removing animal proteins from the diet. I did that for a week and my symptoms began to fade and one day I tried to eat a chicken broth and they came back right away that night. So, I continued with the vegan diet for about 6 weeks and everything went away completely. Since then I have reverted back to eating meat just because it's all I've ever known, so I don't really have a full arsenal of good vegan recipes. But, that's why I have been watching more vegan RUclipsrs. I'm trying to learn from them. I just love Family Fizz. Have you seen them? Recently I have been switching over as much of our foods to plant based as I can until our kiddos get used to it. They all are loving tofu and meatless chilis and vegan hot dogs and sausages. They will pretty much eat any veggies for the most part, so we are well on our way. Our biggest hurdle is going to be cheese. We are major cheese lovers...lol!
@@NoEggCraig lol not at all. I’m back on a plant based diet and I had to remind myself of all the options I have. On the SAD diet it’s easy to forget how great vegetables are 😭😭
Lol dude you crack me up 😂 so excited to see you shopping here bc we just got one where I live + I'm a new vegitarian (hope to one day go vegan- baby steps). Definitely subbing to your channel.
Yep - dried beans soaked and cooked are MUCH nicer than canned. Just soak for 10-12 hrs and cook gently for an hour or less. No salt. They are absolutely delicious. Nice work!!!
The ting is with the thirty dollars and a family of four you get one hundred and twenty. I'd like someone to do an eighty dollar family of four challenge.
You could be the one to do it! I don't think that's unreasonable since the more people you feed the more you have to buy in bulk so you'll save more in the end.
Melissa Menchaca you can definitely do that! I have seen videos and posts where families of 4 survive on $40 a week! More people = better reason to buy in bulk!
That is so true, as a vegan you have to make sacrifices when shopping. Juice, and dry food (convenient) and cereal bars add up really quickly and are usually packed with sugar. Reading the package labels is key.
He's gay Petra haha yeah I assumed that too.. they stock a lot of Australian made stuff in our stores though which is great. It's probably all the little aus flags on things but made me think it was Australian but it's just the stock. I thought Woolworths too, Kmart, Cadbury, heaps of brands and stores that aren't.
jeannette katt They do have H-E-B in Texas and they have a wicked amount of vegan/vegetarian food like meat substitutes!!! That are crazy cheap than like Trader Joes And Whole Food and Walmart.
I'm not vegan, just vegetarian, but beans are such a life saver. I use them in many different ways, even in sweet stuff! We eat falafel once a week at my house and my kids love it. Super cheap, like 2.00 for eight servings. My basics shopping list always includes black, red and garbanzo beans. I even learned how to make fake "cookie dough" for the kids to munch on out of garbanzo beans.
In sweden where i live we have like kilo-price so you easily can compare wich product is the cheapest, when the stuff are different weights and price. Do you not have something like that in the US? not in kilo of course but like pound-price, haha!
Make your own salsa!! It’s sooo easy, wrap the tomatoes, garlic and pepper (if you want) in aluminum foil with olive oil if desired then just bake. Also, invest in an electric pressure cooker so you can make fresh cooked beans from dry in less than 1 hour.
your video came up in my right hand column and now I am a new subscriber. Great to see a down to earth vegan youtuber. Greetings from Sydney, Australia!
Moises of course he's aware. That's not the point, the point is cheap. If you couldn't tell. I didn't hear or read 'healthy' Most people on a budget under $30 are sacrificing fresh and healthy for cheap. Still a lotttt better than frozen pizzas and pot noodles which is usual budgeting student staples my friends eat.
Moises Assuming he's keeping his sodium low(to prevent bloating and water weight gain) and he's burning more calories than he's taking in I'm pretty sure he's fine. The door>>>
In Australia we have regulations for supermarkets so that the price tags on the shelf actually have to tell you how much you're actually paying for the product. For example pain killers they have to state how much you are paying per pill and another example sugar, the price tag tells you how much per 100 grams (or per 100 ounces for example seeing as you're American). That really helps when trying to figure out how to save the most on a budget - just a fun fact, not sure if this is a big thing in America.
it is always about time consumption / convenience versus money. I make my own stuff from scratch , I buy dried beans and make refried myself plus dried goods will last forever and not go bad. Also about the marina sauce. So easy to have some spices growing in the kitchen window, like oregano or basil. and I am already buying garlic and onions, so cheap and easy to make myself , just buy the cheapest tomatoes (fresh, canned or glass doesn't matter), better in bulk, cook a big pot and freeze in small serving portions for pasta & pizza, add some carrot for natural sweetness. I can always squeeze out 5 more minutes to do stuff but I can not get more money, so I always opt for "DIY" :)
This may sound crazy but the best way to check to see if potatoes are good it to smell them. If they smell like dirt they're good if not don't buy them.
Make your own hummus-dirt cheap, too Also try to make your own marinara, freezes beautifully, too. $1 or less for a 28-9 oz can of tomaot sauce/puree, add dried italian spices, salt/pepper, garlic powder. Done.
I look forward to seeing what you make. I usually only buy some stuff from the bulk section ( vital wheat gluten, chickpea flour, raw cashews, nooch, etc) and have a field day in the produce section.
Just for the record, some Dollar Tree stores have refrigerated and frozen sections. I used to get frozen veggies at Aldi, but now I do most of my shopping at Dollar Tree. ;)
Do watch the video for all the details and info, but here's Craig's haul: Bag of fresh spinach 2 cans refried beans Canister of oats Jar of salsa 2 jars marinara Pumpkin pie mix (to add to oatmeal) Frozen veggie mix (steams in bag) Bag of (dry) great northern beans Bag of potatoes Fresh mushrooms Frozen peas (steams in bag) 2 boxes pasta Bag of carrots Bag of basmati rice 2 bags taco-size tortillas (10 each pak)
I've been vegan since the beginning of the year, and I shop at Aldi a lot. You can get a lot of your staples for so much cheaper than a grocery store. New sub!
go Craig!! thanks so much for inspiring others around you to be vegan. I just found your channel and I can't wait to watch everything in the near future, lol. keep it up!
Love this video! Frozen vegetables tend to have more nutrients than the fresh ones because they have to be picked when they're ripe then they;re flash frozen. So you can get frozen veggies for cheaper and be really healthy in the process!
In England using Aldi I spend around £15 a week on my vegan shop and never buy anything until the next week! I did some of the money conversions and the stuff in America are still considerably more money than here in Britain! We have huge bags of frozen vegetables for so much cheaper than you got those small bags.
If you were to shop ahead of time and stock up things in cupboard and freezer as everything you bought other than the spinach will last for weeks to months to years you could have gotten a lot more. Some stores even have discount food areas for fresh and another for other processed/canned/dried foods. If you shopped multiple stores for the best sales on specific items you would save even more. You would probably be able to get a month worth of food for $45-50 and it all be vegan. There are very few foods that I would buy if they were not on sale. When I shop I only buy sale foods for the most part and base my meals around that. I sometimes will buy the store out of certain items when on sale. Not vegan(former 15 year veggie) but we eat a lot of veggie and vegan meals.
And....beans aren't hard to do, in fact dried beans are super simple, just need to give them time to soak and cook (thank you crockpot) The hands on time for dried beans is really less than a minute. If you have an extra couple of minutes add a sauteed onion/jalapeño or some green chiles.
I pick up flat bread in my supermarket last weekend and realized the expiry date is another 5 month. They put preservative in the ingredients. Must be a lot to make bread last that long. So I just put it back. Go to the baking section, buy extra fine wholemeal flour, go home, knead and roll my own roti.
Ok, this is for one person.... multiply that times 3,4,5 or more and include all meals, that total comes up real quick. Especially if you are trying to buy organic.
Aldi is the only reason why we had food in the house for 3 months
For real though they're life savers
i barely shop anywhere else now saves so much money

Wow! You definitely have a new subscriber here! Loving your content and sense of humour. Looking forward to seeing more videos :)
Awesome, thanks so much!
Just curious where did you find canned beans for 59 cents? A buck a can is a deal where I live. I've seen them as high as 3 bucks a can.
Wow haha idk that's just the price near me
Lila Collins they're between 40 and 55 cent here in Florida but only at a few stores like Walmart, piggly wiggly and save alot
I still find myself going back to this video
Haha well that's not a bad thing!
@@NoEggCraig lol not at all. I’m back on a plant based diet and I had to remind myself of all the options I have. On the SAD diet it’s easy to forget how great vegetables are 😭😭
@@TorTheWeirdo that's great to hear! I'm here if you need anything Tor!
Lol dude you crack me up 😂 so excited to see you shopping here bc we just got one where I live + I'm a new vegitarian (hope to one day go vegan- baby steps). Definitely subbing to your channel.
Awesome! Great to have you here!
Love this! It really motivated me to cut back on my grocery spending.
Just stumbled across your channel, it's great, I think I'm gonna stay :)
*subbed*
Edit: 5:07 - 5:23 I do that all the time lol
VegAnimation haha glad I'm not alone
Yep - dried beans soaked and cooked are MUCH nicer than canned. Just soak for 10-12 hrs and cook gently for an hour or less. No salt. They are absolutely delicious. Nice work!!!
The ting is with the thirty dollars and a family of four you get one hundred and twenty. I'd like someone to do an eighty dollar family of four challenge.
You could be the one to do it! I don't think that's unreasonable since the more people you feed the more you have to buy in bulk so you'll save more in the end.
No Egg Craig 🤔
Melissa Menchaca you can definitely do that! I have seen videos and posts where families of 4 survive on $40 a week! More people = better reason to buy in bulk!
Melissa Menchaca I do it on $80 a week for 3 on a mainly raw vegan haul.
That is so true, as a vegan you have to make sacrifices when shopping. Juice, and dry food (convenient) and cereal bars add up really quickly and are usually packed with sugar. Reading the package labels is key.
what the fuck? this entire time i thought ALDI's was an Australian only store wtf
haha it actually originated in Germany 😂 they're literally all over the world
No Egg Craig just got one in my home town. I'll be coming home to visit my folks quite a bit more from now on...😂
lol I'm German and we have ALDI stores EVERYWHERE, I'm a student so the cheap prices are great!
He's gay Petra I though it was dutch 😂 wtf
He's gay Petra haha yeah I assumed that too.. they stock a lot of Australian made stuff in our stores though which is great. It's probably all the little aus flags on things but made me think it was Australian but it's just the stock. I thought Woolworths too, Kmart, Cadbury, heaps of brands and stores that aren't.
"ALAN! You're not a tripod! You can move over here!" ... that made me laugh so hard - great videos! I just found you.
Greetings from Switzerland 🌿
haha thanks Andrea
NO FAIR!!!!!
YOU HAVE AN ALDIS!!!!
i miss aldis. they arent in el paso tx. nearest one to us is in Oklahoma
It's the greatest
jeannette katt They do have H-E-B in Texas and they have a wicked amount of vegan/vegetarian food like meat substitutes!!! That are crazy cheap than like Trader Joes And Whole Food and Walmart.
I'm a HUGE Aldi fan and that's how I found your channel. Great stuff. Two thumbs up.
I
"59 cents is usually cheaper than 65 cents".
Boi😂😂 new subbie
Mary Dellomas yes! ✊️
In sweden where i live we have like kilo-price so you easily can compare wich product is the cheapest, when the stuff are different weights and price. Do you not have something like that in the US? not in kilo of course but like pound-price, haha!
yeah just not at Aldi's
also for refried beans, they are way cheaper if you cook pinto beans then blend them up with tomato paste juice and salt and seasoning.
Great haul! So easy to eat on a budget as a vegan!🍃💪✌
Right!? Not hard at all
I'm convinced I can find a gold standard meme-worthy moment deep within your channel😂 Love the video btw!
oh god don't go deep in my channel, the further back you go the more cringetastic it gets
I wished german Aldis were this great!
One day
Make your own salsa!! It’s sooo easy, wrap the tomatoes, garlic and pepper (if you want) in aluminum foil with olive oil if desired then just bake. Also, invest in an electric pressure cooker so you can make fresh cooked beans from dry in less than 1 hour.
looking to save on beans but bought hummus. This is cheap to make yourself. come on man
did not watch it to the end before commenting, my bad
Subbed, glad you showed up in my recommendations. I'm looking forward to watching this series :)
Team vegan!!!
your video came up in my right hand column and now I am a new subscriber. Great to see a down to earth vegan youtuber. Greetings from Sydney, Australia!
kaz coll thanks! Glad to have you and hello from NY!
woo! This is what I need!
Woo!
Where had this channel been all my life. You are hilarious.
i hope youre aware that just because youre vegan doesnt mean youre eating healthy. thats a lot of canned/microwavable shit.
Moises of course he's aware. That's not the point, the point is cheap. If you couldn't tell. I didn't hear or read 'healthy'
Most people on a budget under $30 are sacrificing fresh and healthy for cheap. Still a lotttt better than frozen pizzas and pot noodles which is usual budgeting student staples my friends eat.
Moises It's still healthier than what most Americans eat.
Moises Assuming he's keeping his sodium low(to prevent bloating and water weight gain) and he's burning more calories than he's taking in I'm pretty sure he's fine. The door>>>
Still better than at least 90% of Americans!
He looks so unhealthy. Black eyes and junk food.
you got me with that 'Barbaric!' lol 😂
"The more you know" cracked me up. And when the thug music came on. I love learning little tips and tricks from you guys thanks xo
Love your work, Craig! Subbed, man.
thanks!
Great video! I like your unique editing style. Vegan and trying to lower my grocery budget, subscribed!!
Hey Courtny, glad you found me!
it is always about time consumption / convenience versus money.
I think this is a really good idea because even people who aren't vegan all the time might eat vegan on occasion since meat is so expensive
yahhhh cheese is hella expensive too!
Hey I am watching this 2 years from then! Thanks for the playlist!
I was talking to spedifically to you Ginan!
I'm sure there's a warning label, but make sure you check dried beans for small rocks and other debris. same thing applies for lentils
Oh there is haha, I already rinsed them and they're soaking as we speak!
cool beans
adam fink 😂
This may sound crazy but the best way to check to see if potatoes are good it to smell them. If they smell like dirt they're good if not don't buy them.
That does sound crazy but definitely useful haha
Make your own hummus-dirt cheap, too Also try to make your own marinara, freezes beautifully, too. $1 or less for a 28-9 oz can of tomaot sauce/puree, add dried italian spices, salt/pepper, garlic powder. Done.
This is my new favourite vegan bodybuilding channel. Subscribed.
I'm huge
I look forward to seeing what you make. I usually only buy some stuff from the bulk section ( vital wheat gluten, chickpea flour, raw cashews, nooch, etc) and have a field day in the produce section.
I would usually have a field day in the produce section too, but it's hard on a tight budget!
the fact that you added bernie sanders saying barberak makes me really happy
Bernie Sanders!!!??? You mean Robert Byrd? 😂
Just for the record, some Dollar Tree stores have refrigerated and frozen sections. I used to get frozen veggies at Aldi, but now I do most of my shopping at Dollar Tree. ;)
Do watch the video for all the details and info, but here's Craig's haul:
Bag of fresh spinach
2 cans refried beans
Canister of oats
Jar of salsa
2 jars marinara
Pumpkin pie mix (to add to oatmeal)
Frozen veggie mix (steams in bag)
Bag of (dry) great northern beans
Bag of potatoes
Fresh mushrooms
Frozen peas (steams in bag)
2 boxes pasta
Bag of carrots
Bag of basmati rice
2 bags taco-size tortillas (10 each pak)
I've been vegan since the beginning of the year, and I shop at Aldi a lot. You can get a lot of your staples for so much cheaper than a grocery store. New sub!
First vid of yours i saw, subbed after "barbaric!" haha. Editing on point. Great info too :)
haha thanks, glad somebody caught that
go Craig!! thanks so much for inspiring others around you to be vegan.
"You're not a tripod, you can come over here"
In England using Aldi I spend around £15 a week on my vegan shop and never buy anything until the next week!
Not vegan(former 15 year veggie) but we eat a lot of veggie and vegan meals.
love ya, No Egg , you"re the best .
Haha thanks I try!
I have never really thought of looking at the cost/calories. It brings a new perspective on choices.
I had to like and subscribe at the senator Byrd barbaric clip..was not expecting that. awesome video, looking forward to more. :)
hahaha whenever anybody says barbaric that is immediately what I think of
I'm not bout dat Iceberg life either, Craig! 😂 #goodtimes
Ok, this is for one person.... multiply that times 3,4,5 or more and include all meals, that total comes up real quick. Especially if you are trying to buy organic.
