Always good vibes when you guys are together IRL. The podcast is always a joy to listen to but there’s an extra something when you guys are together in person.
The Japanese ambassador (to the UK; the home nations are not recognised on the international stage) sang the welsh national anthem in anticipation of some sort of official visit.
My last trip to Japan was a few years ago and I had similar encounter in a small local convenience store (not one of those branded chains). As I was lining up to pay, the Japanese customer in front of me received typical cashier interactions. But when it's my turn (I'm Chinese but not from mainland China), the store clerk quickly switched up his behavior from the typical Japanese store clerk customer service to "who the fuck are you hurry up pay and leave" attitude. When I noticed the shift in attitude, I paid more attention and realize that the clerk isn't Japanese. He's probably from mainland China or Taiwan. So, I believe these foreign staffs might treat you differently when it's obvious that you're not a typical Japanese customer. I believe that the staff could literally be asking for a tip.
As an American, no, you dont tip convenience store workers, certainly not cashiers. There are two states which still have full-service gas pumps, meaning an employee must pump your gas for you, and you aren't expected to tip them either.
One state New Jersey is Full Service. Oregon went partially self service, and your suppose to tip an attendant if you arrive at a gas station that has both self and full service. There are other full service gas stations in other states, but they are extremely rare(Mostly northern states like Massachusetts and upstate New York)
Tip culture is only to replace the liveable wages that companies refuse to pay in the US. It definitely shouldn't spread to places where workers are paid an actual wage
Chris, that looks like a compostable cup. The lid and cup are made to compost so they are much more flimsy than the hard stuff in Japan. Hope that answers your annoyance :)
I never had Pete pegged as a fan of No Use for A Name. I saw them play a couple times in London, one time at the Astoria and again at The Garage. I'm sure he's into a lot of Japanese pop punk like Hi-Standard too?
There are companies in the USA that do the same thing with tips. My buddy worked at and essentially ran a Dunkin Donuts franchise location when we were in high school. He got in trouble with the owner on two points; eating or donating the donuts they were going to throw out in the dumpster at the end of the day, and taking tips. They were going to go after him for an unbalanced till basically saying the money should have gone to the store, but also if the register is "over" the calculated sale value at the end of the day he would also get in trouble.
As a Westerrn Australian who has been four times in two years and with one definite and two possible trips planned, Japan is big enough to be diverse but easish to travel around. I especially love getting out and walking forrested mountain paths. My home state is huge and unless you fly. driving distances are by hours even days. And then while there is jae dropping natural beauty here, deserts, forrests, gorges, tunnel creeks,, the most amazing beaches and quokkas, the towns are all kind of the same and culturally it is very limited here (not counting the Conti Roll and Long Mac 3/4 topped up). I do enjoy other countries, but from here Japan is just so accessible and only one hour ahead. So even after 15 hours travelling it is possible to land and start exploring.
Every time Pete's car was mentioned, I heard it as Toyota Sentry. When the doilies were mentioned in this video, I was reminded of the cars in Tokyo Vice so I googled Toyota Sentry which was corrected to Toyota Century and Pete drives the same car the 1999 Chihara-kai in Tokyo Vice drive around in!
Hey Pete! Get yourself an ozone generator and put in the car with the aircon fans on. You cannot be in the car while the generator is running. You want an industrial one the size of a small lunchbox. It will eliminate the cigarette smell. You might have to run it for a few hours but it should work well for you
There was something amazing about this episode, I was wandering around B&Q listening and it was perfect RADIO! Banter and anecdotes and talking about stuff from 15 years ago
The answer's sort of in the question, though. What kind of man is unpopular with women? The kind of man who would organize a protest about it. Annually.
16:27 - Not sure if this happens in Japan, but when I lived in Singapore, I would occassionally (actually fairly rarely) be told I couldn't do something, when I knew full well I could. I learned some people just didn't want to deal with foreigners, and assumed, as a foreigner, that I didn't know, and they hoped I would go away.
I still have most of my old Disc burning kit about, only ever made one VCD which was The Nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride that was probably compressed to buggery and since been replaced with various DVD and Blue ray copies, also still have a Firewire Card although the Handycam it was for was sold donkeys years ago. If you're passing through Herts and you can bring me some blank discs and whatever you want on them I can probably get some sorted so you can demo the TV etc, may well be something conversion wise about too as I know with BMWs ones you can get a Digital tuner mod, plus if theres any inputs you can probably just hide a little Android box somewhere in the Boot and run it smart TV style with even the ability to run old Japanese TV and ads if at a Car show etc.
If I had to guess on the tip story, the cashier was probably not Japanese. Been living in Japan for over five years and I can't imagine a Japanese person ever asking for a tip. There is an increasingly large amount of SEA staff at convenience stores these days and as someone who hasn't lived in Asia it might be hard to tell if they are Japanese or not for that guy. So I'd expect that the staff member was a non-Japanese employee who knows westerners have tipping culture and figured they'd give it a try for some extra money.
Try reading the Google reviews of convenience stores. So many negative and strange and funny reviews. Very entertaining. Also lots of comments about foreign workers.
My girlfriend and I bought two statues at the airport, for what we thought was a measly £12. When we left the store, the two girls who served us became very animated and started giggling, which I thought was a bit weird. 🤔 When we got home and checked our credit card, the bill came to £127!!! 😮 Guess what? The store "assistants" were Chinese.
@zorfmorf2414 I knew they were Chinese because I picked up on a few words and numbers that they said between themselves. I practiced kung-fu in my teenage years.
Goodfellas is Scorsese at peak form. I'll watch any of his output, but I don't think he's ever bettered it. Went to see it 3 times when it was released. Eggers is fantastic and if anyone is going to do justice to the classic vampire tale - it's him. The Murnau and Herzog versions are well worth watching, if you haven't seen them.
A boy I went to school with was brainwashed by mr hook hand. He was sent to Guantanamo bay. Such a nice quiet lad he would be the last person I would ever think could be taken in by someone like Hamza.
my 2 fave all time films are 1969's The Italian Job and 1983's Local Hero. Couldn't be any different from each other, yet both live in a special place in my heart.

Haha ok so the car video hasn’t come out yet…watch the space!
I went looking! 😂
I was wondering whether YT failed me with notifications and recommendations or not haha
Is it going to be on this channel?
Lol
So you're going to release it right before you're back in London again? Just like the Cyclethon video 😉

Funny Chris, because when I go from Essex to Kent, I think the EXACT SAME THING.
I'd always tip bossman for a delicious sausage from the rotating conveyor belt, personally
I do to...unless they main Eddy
Protest seemed to be related to dating culture. Christmas has totally different meaning in Japan compared to Europe.
That dad-drawing website sounds DELIGHTFUL, honestly.
Chris Broad sitting in the Football Ramble room. Never thought I'd see that day.

When you boys started talking about Abu Hamza, I thought, "Wait, not that Abu Hamza, surely?"
And lo and nehold, it was the very same.
I have an obscure anime series on VCD that I bought in Singapore back in 2007😂
Lovely Sunday night viewing ❤

Did I hear that Pete and his partner had adopted a child? We adopted twins who turn 17 next month and I'm wondering where the time went....
been brought up a few podcasts back yea, just random lore drop.

So Pete calls Chris an old old Soviet man whilst looking like Uncle Joe Starlin.

Foreigner working at a Conbini definitely.
I’d call the manager tbh.

I could be wrong, but that looks exactly like the Jaackmaate 'Happy Hour' studio...
Pete you should replace the cabin air filter in your toyota

Some ambient colored lighting would probably also do wonders
