Xander, you picked up the double haul incredibly fast for a rookie. I've been fly fishing for several decades. It took me months of casting before I started double hauling. I never deliberately tried learning it, it just happened while I was regularly fly fishing. Here's a casting tip: Concentrate on feeling the rod load on the backcast. With a graphite rod, once you've got say 20' of line out, you can feel the line load the rod. Just backcast, pause, feel it load the rod, and then start your forward cast. Thanks for beautimus vids..

  • @nevillesmith9130
    @nevillesmith9130 2 года назад +108

Dude - I’ve fly fished for twenty years and when you were casting off the rock, you were actually double hauling… which is somewhat technically difficult for a beginner. Hats off fine sir… well done!

Being a Southern girl, we fished with a cane pole. My dad always had a rod and reel. In the Air Force, we had a buddy who was passionate about fly fishing. Some of the things we learned, which may of may not be true, the fly lure should simulate the flies hitting on the surface of water. We mainly fished for trout and arctic grayling in Alaska. You don’t really “catch” salmon, you snag it. There are rules for that too. Anyway excellent adventure! Thanks for bringing us along.

A tip. I seen it from the start, the hand you grip the rod with you're supposed to use your index finger to 'guide' the fly line while stripping the fly back. It keeps the line closer so you don't have to reach so far foreword to strip (at the rod guide like you were) you curl your index finger loosely to let the line slide through easily. Not bad for a start. When setting the hook, don't lift the rod like conventional gear, you strip set the hook because fly rods are not designed for lifting. Biggest fish for me on fly so far is a 160lb Tarpon. I fly fish Saltwater, Brackish and all types of Freshwater

Great video Xander. TY for sharing. I taught myself to fly-fish 40+ years ago. Casting is important for presentation. The Science is also important. Learn what fish are feeding on what insect and in what stage of growth, and you will outfish anyone, anywhere. Blessings all.

I've seen a dude rock fly fishing with a long stick and one make-shift eyelet on the tip and the line on a spool at his feet. "It's all in the wrist" so he says. This way he didn't have to hike with a clumsy fragile fishing rod through the woods. GREAT VIDEO Xander, always a pleasure to wake up Saturday morning to one of these.

Xander, When you draw in your line, draw it in BEHIND your right forefinger so that your finger can control the line. Otherwise, just keep practicing, you'll get it. When done right, fly fishing is the most productive way to fish. I still use my spinning outfit mostly, but if you want to just catch and catch, matching what the fish want with flies is non stop action.

Honestly not bad, one of the first survival channels I've seen actually be active and not just cast it out then wait. The only advice I could give is tighten up the slack so you have less of that awkward shift from holding the line to reeling in and fight the urge to go hard while flying the lure like you were, distance is pretty much a non-factor. Fish can see the flight of the bugs and if you better mimic their movements by being a bit slower it'll help. The guy who taught me was crazy good and would often have the fish jump out at the lure before it hit the water, he always out fished everyone.
In the end it's all just about finding that smooth rhythm and from there you'll learn what works for the fish you are trying to catch.

Loved the video! I have to tell you the same thing my uncle taught me at the age of 10 years. Keep the elbow down by your side. Only lift and drop the forearm. Pause briefly on the back cast giving the line time to straighten then drop the forearm with a slight flick of the wrist. Let the rod do the work. I am looking forward to your next video demonstration.

Fly fishing is certainly an art form, watching someone do it well is amazing. You can run a fly on a spin rod. Tie on your fly to a piece of line (80-100cm), then tie on a float (half filled with water) then tie on your main line. The water filled float gives you weight for casting, but still floats, and the fly (either wet/dry) sits on the surface or drops down.

Your forward cast and back cast should be similar to the motion of hammering a nail into a wall...the sudden stop will help to propel your fly. Snap your wrist to a stop at 10 o'clock before lowering your arm down on your final forward cast. Tight loops!

Sure the fly fishing starts out as an idea, then you go out and even make a couple of good casts, maybe catch a fish or two on the fly...then you look at what you are casting and think that you can make a realistic fly too, you start to tie flies in your free time. Before you realize it, you're hooked😉
Great videos and another great adventure👍

For a first try with a fly rod, you did very well. One of the other great advantages of fly fishing is that your lure can be in the water all the time, unlike spinning. Learn to do a roll cast to help a lot with fly placement and your hits will increase even more. Read the water and you'll have a good idea of where fish are likely to be.

I shoulda watched this in the evening, so I could have had a drink to brace myself before watching the fly fishing. 😀
You idea of the advantages of fly fishing are way off, but the same as most people who’ve never done it. To me fly fishing is by far the best way to fish rivers and especially streams. It’s just a better tool for the job, but it’s also just a more fun way in other situations.
Also, it’s something you can fall deep deep into, and many fishermen study the local insects, hatches , nymphs etc etc.. so they have a way better idea of what fish are eating, so often more likely to catch, but not always.
I ended up building my own rods, and spent a fortune setting up a rather large fly trying "shop". I spent years tying and testing patterns. It can be quite a hobby. But it’s not always the best tool for the job, and frankly I’m much more likely to grabs spinning rod.
Anyway, keep it up, and for sure you’ll get it. Being willing to learn and having humility are two traits you seem to have, and will almost guarantee success.

Awesome video. It's cool to be a beginner and I look forward to your progress. From what I see there's a bit too much movement with your elbow when casting. On your cell the guy mentioned "opening a screen door". That's all the movement you need, it's basically all your forearm doing the work and try to keep the rod straight up. The timing is the tough part, when to go forward and when to go back. It's a fun way to fish and I hope you stick with it. Go to Quetico the first 2 weeks in june and blast some 20 inch smallmouths on poppers. That would be a fun time!

Keep hitting that jump, dude. It took me a lot longer to catch my first fish on a fly, but I never looked back.

Lol I love how at 5:30 you stir the coffee with a log and the next screen you can clearly see spoons and forks that arguably would have worked better

A good advice to learn fly fishing is to start taking lesions. It is harder to correct the mistakes after a while instead of correcting them from the start. It is wise to learn the fundamentals and ground principles from someone that knows the craft. I love your videos, and are really impressed by the amount of calories you digest from your meals! Keep up the good work!
