Being frugal is not about being cheap, it’s about being resourceful

I think when you have kids it is some what important to take some trips with them. Just an annual trip to the beach or a lake (whatever is closer). It takes gas money, a few nights in a hotel or cabin, and bring some food with you so you dont have to eat out every meal. Gives my kids something to look forward to and is an opportunity to make so many memories.

I get buyers remorse over everything. I buckle down and save everything I can then I spot something I want and think YOLO! Then I spend a lot of time feeling guilty over non essential spending. I have been working on minimalism over the past 2 years and it always brings me back to saving and living more frugally. I think that there is a huge need to work treats into the budget so that you don't splurge.

Tnxs for your video’s. I am a single mother of three kids, that I adopted as a single. I live in the Netherlands. I can relate to your story; I am also living frugally, but sometimes it is a struggle to continue to do so. But I am glad I do. My eldest son went to high school. I could buy a brand new bike for him and all the schoolsupplies he needs. We go once every year on holiday, but we stay in the Netherlands and only go for 10 days. By living this way I was able to make extra payments to my mortgage for several years. Tax refunds and extra payments go to the mortgage too. In 5 years from now, I won’t have any payments left and we’ll live mortgage free. Me and my kids have decided that by then we buy a dog. Please continue making video’s; I like watching them.

Being 60 this year I definitely definitely wish I had been more smart with my money when I was younger. If I had, I could reduce my work hours from 40 a week to 32 or possibly 24 hours a week which is something that my body would love me to do now after working physically hard my whole life. There’s got to be a balance it can’t all be one way or or all the other. I also think people need to start purchasing what they need rather than what they want. That’s something that I’ve been seriously doing for the last couple of years and it’s amazing the amount of money I haven’t spent. Like you I could go on and on about this subject but I’ll close with saying another awesome video Kate, I do look forward to Friday’s! 💗💗💗

I live in India . I am a single parent with a son . We have traveled almost every year since 2005 in the country. The way I plan it is I make three parts. Travel , accommodation and food. Think about the total budget and divide accordingly. Another fun thing about this country is we have accommodations for pilgrims at hindu temples where you stay for free and leave a donation that you can afford. Using this opportunity I have been to beautiful places in the Himalayas when on a shoestring budget.

I’ll be 59 in November. I left full time employment in July of 2018 due to major stress and anxiety. The only way this was possible was we are debt free. No mortgage or car. Thanks be to God. I’ve worked part time since October 2018 but that’s closed right now due to the coronavirus. It’s not much but it helps.
I so wished I/we had been as smart as you when we were in our 20’s/30’s.
Our savings is not what it could be because of my spending. I think I lived the yolo life for a very long time. It’s hard to realize that we could have so much more money instead I have purses etc.
I’m doing a much better job. Again thanks be to God. It’s hard to break that chain.
I really love your channel. You’re very informative and relatable.
Keep up the good work. God bless

My thoughts: it comes down to priorities, values and needs. Once you allocate your money to your needs/essentials you can spread out the rest to your priorities and what you value. Would you agree Kate?
I regularly review what my priorities are because they do shift and I am clear on my values. When creating a budget or money plan, it's possible to set it up as: Essentials, Priorities, and Values. Example: Savings might go into priorities, Travel might go into Value and Rent/Mortage into Priorities.

I vacation multiple times per year. It is my thing! But I am also in BS7. Last year my family did a Caribbean cruise with Disney, I took my son on a European cruise with Disney to celebrate his high school graduation, and I went with my mom to her highschool reunion in Maine and Quebec. This year is Italy, France, and Spain with my daughter and her Spanish class, and a family trip to Disneyland.

Great advice! Spend on what brings you joy and save or cut out on what doesn’t. I am very frugal on most things in my life, I rarely eat out or go to the movies, I buy store brand food and produce that’s in season because it’s cheaper even though it may not be my favorite. Use old towels instead of paper towels and make coffee at home. I used to shower at the gym to save in water (until the pandemic hit). But once or twice a year, I like to go on a holiday. Usually one trip that requires a plane ride and one road trip. I still travel frugally, using points and miles, getting groceries and enjoying free activities at my destination. But it’s something that I really enjoy so I just budget for it. Holidays and retirement investing are where I like to splurge. I don’t mind if I have to live simply otherwise. I wasn’t always this way. I grew up with very frugal parents and when I finally had my own money, I definitely went YOLO for quite sometime. Glad I finally found my path and have been much happier not spending money on material things but fun memories instead and hopefully a secure future with retirement savings.

I haven’t been on a vacation in 5-6 years. I had immense debt from a private autism school for my daughter. Once she was settled, I tightened my belt so tight not a single dollar slipped through unnoticed until I rebuilt my EF. Then I was seriously injured and spent the 16k during 4 months off of work. Finally, I have my emergency fund up to 24K. I am going to Disney sometime in the next year with no guilt our self doubt. Yes, it’s expensive, but priceless memories made will be worth every penny!

I never want to have the money anxiety that I had before paying off debt and living beyond my means. I agree with you on practicing gratitude. I'm very proud of the life I have created and have so much to be thankful for. Has it always been easy? Same dilemma how much to spend vs save and where is the balance. Dave says there are only 3 things you can do with money spend , save, give. For along time I was in save mode , but my cousin passed suddenly this year and I realized you can’t put your life on hold to save for tomorrow , forever. I agree with you there is a balance and nothing beats going to bed with peace of mind. Glad to know others struggle with the right balance.

I loved this video. And I love how you talked about your living arrangements. In 2009, I left an abusive husband. I had two daughters and one on the way. Not my best shining moment in life. I moved in with my parents and ended up staying 6 years. I was able to go back to school and get a good job. Unfortunately, my dad passed away that last year we were there. Pancreatic cancer. I look back now at that and I am so grateful for parents and the time I got to have with my dad. Just my opinion, maybe you should stay. 💗 I was wondering if you have any videos about your monthly expenses and how much you save. Do you have sinking funds? Already paid for hotel and airfare; my friend and I are sharing a room, and bought tickets to a Broadway Show. All I will have to buy while there are incidentals, transportation and food. Happy about that!

Homeownership in this day and time is not always what its cracked up to be. There is a lot of hidden cost. Your housing situation dounds perfect for now and into the foreseeable future. If you want a change, paint the inside of your home in brighter colors. It will pep you up for fairly cheap and bgive you the feeling of a new home!

You are amazing! I resonate with everything you are saying.
My experience with homeownership has not been worth it. I have been house poor for so many years. I haven’t stayed anywhere long enough to make ownership worth wild. I loose money every time. I’m hoping this is the last time I make this mistake. My theory on ownership is that you need to be sure you don’t want to move for at least 5 or more years. You need to put the 20% down so you are not paying PMI which is an extra fee on your mortgage until you have 20% value. Also you need to have maintenance money to cover repairs and upgrades. Also make sure you can pay off the house in 15 years or less. At this rate with my 30 year mortgage I’ll never pay it off and still have all the stress of ownership. There is nothing wrong with renting. You don’t own the house anyway, the mortgage company owns it.
We are Disney addicts. My goal is to move to Florida and work for Disney. We try to go every year. We use our tax refund to go. That has been my savings plan for many years. We are just now working on a savings goal to move to Florida.
Your videos give me inspiration and motivation to keep going. One day I will be debt free.

Indeed it is the best of both worlds Kate. Know what you spent your money on. Chose what you find importend and see what you can do to make life better. ( for yourself and the ones you know or love) Enjoy what you have got and still are able to do ( finacially and fysical) and a smile!!! ( Just like you do) it makes everything a lot more fun. A friend of mine had a message for us on her funeral: what the world needs now is love sweet love, it's the only thing that really matters ....the full 29 years she lived were truly like this. She lived a frugal , little energie she ever had and all her money she spent on writing positive cards to People who she knew could really use one.

Girl I can relate! My last two real vacations were to Dominican republic in 2008 and Mexico in 2009😂 I did a long weekend away last summer up north and a long weekend this fall to Niagara falls. My travel is non existent! Miss it but truthfully I'm a homebody and prioritize my mortgage. I would encourage you to buy a home if you can. You build financial equity and it's a sense of comfort and accomplishment. Personally it's worth it to me to live frugally to own my house. Especially as a single woman. After my ex and I broke up and I moved out of our house, it was important to me to have my own space again 💙

YOLO? We are eternal AND THIS You is only once. Whatever anyone wants to have/be as that expression that is their decision and it's all good. Frugality isn't everyone's good. It wasn't mine until recently and I'm over 50. Frugality is also often too much a cover for stinginess, ownership in a silly way, judgement against self, God/Source others, and many other unfortunate mindsets. Blessings to you and your family

I love to do little getaways the cheapest way I can. I purchased a home in April that was exactly what I wanted but higher price then I would have paid if it wasnt important to me for my kids to stay in their school district. It fits my budget and I am so glad i bought. Vacations are extremely important to me. We do one big one per year and spend around $1000-1500 and little excursions during the year.

I've learned that living simply and being content with what you have been blessed with is extremely important. What's important to me is spending time with God, quality time with my children and husband, spending money on experiences not on stuff. We've come to a point in society that what we have is never enough. We want a bigger home, more cars, the next best handbag. It's a never ending cycle. I got to the point where I felt like a hamster on an exercise wheel running and going nowhere. YOLO so live.

Kaden is a little sweetheart! I recently had someone describe me as a financial minimalist. YOLO-ing has been a very foreign concept for me because I've been a money planner for so long, that I rarely splurge. It keeps me sane (or is it insane)! However, just a few years ago I spent more money than I ever have, but it was all for home improvements and my hobby. I went through sticker shock at first, but I get to enjoy my "investments" every day. Now, I'm back to the financial minimalism comfort zone!

About being the richest cemetery resident...
So there once was a very rich old man, who valued his money above all else, above his family and friends. And his last request was that his entire fortune be converted in cash and packed into an extra large casket around his body, so only he could benefit from his life's efforts.
The widow's friend attended the funeral and noticed only an average size casket. She hugged the widow and whispered "Where you able to fulfill your husband's last request?"
"Yes," the grieving widow replied. "But try as I might, there just wasn't enough room for all the cash in the casket
"So I took it out and wrote him a check instead..."

Hi Kate. I think there is nothing better than the opportunity to live in your Grandmas House with her right there before she crosses over to the next life. Kaden will always remember when he lived with his Mom and his Great Grandma. Such a Wonderful Blessing and Irreplaceable Time you are living in right now. You can always buy a house later. Or even buy her house later if it's an option. And as far as vacations go, your brother has gone to Disney so many times he knows all the hot spots and the time wasters so let him be your guide on the best vaca ever. My sister went to London about 5 times. She took me her 6th time. She asked me what I wanted to see. I had no idea. So I said take me to all your favorite places. It was an amazing vacation! She enjoyed it just as much as I did. If you share the hotel room it will save you both a ton of money. And as far as Kaden goes, since he is about 6 now, he will never forget hus vacation with hus uncle and Mom. ANd you will never forget his joy and happiness when he is there. You will be such a proud Mom for giving it to him. Book it, Smile and have a Wonderful Time.

Frugal is hard, because I have to remind my husband constantly why we live this way. But I try to be consistent. We have indeed so much. We are healty, have to beautiful kids, a nice house, lovely family an friends. Every day I write down my blessings of that day. We're so rich.
I'm a schoolteacher and today I talked about the kids about having a loth of clothing and stuff. Do we need all these things. Wouldn't it be nicer to have less stuff, but more family time. They all agreed. Some parents bought clothing for the kids that the kids actually did not want. And the parents still bought it!! Kids love to go on vacation in a little cabin with almost no stuff and have the time of their lives! Just having family around. That is what matters. That is what makes us rich. Not a closet full of clothing.
But no judgement to anyone!!! As you say Kate, everyone has to live their life!!! It is just that when you talk to kids, what they really want is family and friends around them.

every other year we go to texas, my bff has a lovely home with a pool, and we love visiting - the transport to get there, that is usually the only thing I pay for as she knows my situation and she treats us like family. cooks for us, entertains us, we do activities that are affordable and swim a lot in her pool. my grandson also used to go to scout camp and church camp, and that was really a vacation for both of us, him at camp - me at home with nothing to do but take care of the animals....now he doesn't go to camp anymore so on the off year we went to universal in florida, last year my former husband died and we were back and forth to texas 3 times over the summer and it was very costly, he was from the same area as my bff....but we still managed to go have fun while we were with her and visiting him daily, so this past summer we did not go anywhere. we did not even go to a local amusement park or anything because the year before had drained savings and mad money and put me so far in debt I never thought I would see out. I helped to pay costs of his funeral, get his belongings taken care of, and made sure my daughter was there for him. She also had no money, so I paid for everything and after wiping out my savings, being further in debt from all those costs, I found it impossible to afford to even buy groceries unless I budgeted and stuck to the regimen. I owned 2 vehicles and several months ago my son hit a deer, then my daughters vehicle blew a head gasket, and I let them use my truck....Now, I am to be debt free in January with the truck paid off, but I have not and cannot go anywhere without a vehicle and I did not replace the car, and of course I let them use the truck. This situation is very hard on me, and on my mental well being. cause if I say no - i'm a mother who doesn't care, if I say yes then I am the mother who lets her kids take advantage of her. but the bills that were all ran up were because of my children and my inability to say no to them. so, yes YOLO has hit home to me Kate, but I am just existing - not living because I am bored to death not being able to go and get a pizza even, we are very rural so no public transport, having no choice but to be frugal even if I don't want to be.... I although i will be debt free, what good is having the extra money if i cant get anywhere to purchase things that are in my budget?

We take vacations but usually it’s a staycation!! If we do go on vacation we research and go do something amazing & family oriented!!! Last October we pulled Eli out of pre-K for a week (the week before fall break). We had this trip in the planning for about 6-12 months. Stayed at an Airbnb & went to New Mexico to go to the International Balloon Festival!!! It was AMAZING!!!!! Loved it so much & met so many people from not only around our country but even Canada & New Zealand!!! So yes, plan fun vacations but who says you have to do the big ones every year? Find some stuff in your own backyard- go camping with your friends/small group, go hiking, find towns in your state with festivals going on & go pick your own apples or whatever off the U-pick-it fields. Have a blast. As long as you are together and having fun enjoying each other, no need to worry about doing it up big. Especially when “we gots bills to pay!”

    Hi Kate,
Prugne here, awesome video! I did not know what YOLO meant.
Now that most of my life is behind me, I most certainly think about what changes I would have made, things I would have done differently, but most of those things you only know from experience.
Things I'm glad I waited on were:
    1. College
    2. Kids
I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up, I still don't know what I want to be... I guess I will know when I grow up.
I agree with you, security and comfort are more important than flash in the pan things.

Donna Jones I don’t agree. I’m great full to have our home. We will have it paid off soon. You can always sell your house you’re in and live off of the money you get from the sale of your house.
