      Thanks for asking. I wanna know too. Was watching CGHiker do the R2R trail and he says he wakes up at 11pm and on the trail by 1 am just to finish while there’s still daylight out. Also watched a father and son duo do Whitney. That one is a good video too. Their channel is called TQ. They made it look so easy. Started around 6, summitted around 11 or so and finished about 8 pm. Also check out Womderhussey. Super informative. Not the norm for sure. Good watch!

    50th sub..... congratulations on your summit. I was confused as this is a new upload but should be waaaaay more snow then I read the comment that it was filmed last September. I made it to trail camp Sept 13 but decided to turn around because I got no sleep the night before at line pine lake and carried too much weight. I did summit in 2010 and was one of best days of my life. Did it in one long 20 hour day. Cried last 5 mins to summit once I realized I was gonna make it. Realized last year that Whitney....for me...is a day hike. Killed myself carrying heavy bear canister and ruined my chance for summit but I will always have my 2010 summit. I did it in early June and had to micro spike up the chute as the switchbacks were still too sketchy. Great video and narration. Happy trails from Riverside CA

      Thanks so much for the sub! 50th deserves something! If you want to send me your mailing address via email to regansummits@gmail.com, I’ll send you something to commemorate your Whitney experience.
      Congrats on your 2010 summit. Nothing can ever take away the fact that you stood at the top.
      I don’t blame you for turning around last year. I would probably have done the same under those circumstances! Carrying too much weight is something I think most of us have done.
      Going up the chute is tougher! That’s definitely a summit bid to remember.
      Cheers from Arizona!

    Did this hike Memorial weekend in 2004. The 99 switch-backs were completely covered in snow so we put on crampons and went straight up the chute, on a ridge of packed snow, just left of the pinnacles. This pretty much wiped me out but I did make it to the top. The scenery above the treeline is unworldly.

    • @ReganOutdoors
      @ReganOutdoors  4 года назад

      So you got a little bit of the mountaineers’ route in at the end? Very nice! Without the gradual and lengthened ascent of the switchbacks, you basically gained a few thousand feet in a fairly short distance. Nice work! Going up the chute is a burn!
      I had planned to film it again in 4K this year, but my trip was cancelled on account of the wildfires and subsequent closures.

    I've hiked this 5 times, and summited 3 times. Every time I did it in one day. It's not an easy hike as it's a long day on one's feet. But it is all worth it when you get to the top and realize that at that moment, in the 48 states, no one is higher up than you unless they're in an airplane. The biggest cruelty of all is making it to Trail Crest, and then dropping down a couple of hundred feet before going back up. Why, oh why?!?! Thanks for the video - brought back some good memories.

    • @LeeFred78
      @LeeFred78 4 года назад

      @@elizabethabbitt2425 I don't remember why I turned around the first time, but it wasn't for weather. The second time I turned around, we ran into a big snowfield real early in the hike a couple of miles before Trail Camp, and we weren't equipped for a lot of snow. I knew it would be worse the higher up we went, so we made the decision to turn around. I always went up in late June or July.

      @@vickersonp The descent can take quite some time on tired legs, and often times, people don't realize how long the ascent will take them. The trail isn't at all technical or dangerous, and there are plenty of people on it during the summer months. I wouldn't worry. It's a very safe hike and a very easy-to-follow trail.

    I wanted to see more gear... And to know the temperature and elevation as you went. But, I’m kinda weird that way. The details round it out for me. Allows me to step inside the experience more easily.
    I’m pretty sure this hike is well beyond my current fitness level, but boy, is this sure something to aspire to.

    • @ReganOutdoors
      @ReganOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark. Thanks so much for your input! I hear ya! All good points. Because the majority of the mileage was done in the dark and not filmable, there wasn’t much actual hiking footage to work with. So I decided to keep this video short, and not drown out the hiking footage with gear, stuff around camp, etc, as there would have been a long lead up and a short hike. Next year, however, I’m going to go back to Whitney, and start in the morning when the sun is up, get a ton of footage, and make a much longer hiking video with all of the details included. This one, I just wanted to show a lot of the scenes that people stop filming as they get more tired... such as the 99 switchbacks.
      You could do this hike with the right training. It’s just a very long day of steady elevation gain :)
      Cheers Mark!

      You would be much wiser to make it a multi-day/ over-night camp hike. 7 hours to Outpost is not good, and it would only drag you down further from there. I am an average hiker - 4 hours from the Portal to Trail Camp (6 miles/12,000 ft), and 16 hrs. round-trip time. You should try starting in the afternoon, and hike to Lone Pine Lake (2 1/2 miles), and over-night there. It is just below the permit point, so you only need a single over-night permit for camping above the lake. You can get acclimated to the altitude there. The next day hike to Trail Camp (just below the switchbacks / 12,000 ft) and over-night there for the 1st day of your over-night permit. Then take most of the next day to summit, and hike back to the Portal in the afternoon. Unless you do a lot of high-altitude conditioning hikes, you will not make it in one day, and only hurt yourself trying. Its a beautiful mountain worth taking your time to see in comfort - not in agony and frustration.

      This was previous. September to be exact. Right now there is a decent amount of snow on the switchbacks, but nothing that crampons could't handle. I've spoken with a few people who hiked it in the last few weeks and they said it's easily manageable with some spikes. If you're going soon, just be mindful of the section with the posts and cables. It's a little narrow, but nothing too technical.

      @@ReganOutdoors I've done Whitney several times, plus Half Dome, Grand Canyon, Gorgonio, San Jacinto, and others... I tried Cactus to Clouds and failed after the first 5 miles due to leg cramps. First time that had ever happened to me. I had plenty of water, Gatorade, fruit - no matter. Maybe it was just a weird day and bad combination of things. At the beginning trail head I met this local guy carrying only a small water bladder on his back. He looked super-fit. He said "have a nice hike", and started running up the trail. I didn't see him again. The first 2 miles of the trail are very difficult to navigate due to numerous other trails meeting and forking away from the main trail. The way is marked with paint dots on the rocks but there are so many that it becomes confusing which way to go. My hike ended up a short 10 mile round-trip. When I got into my car, every muscle in my body ceased up in a massive full-body cramp and I was paralyzed for a couple minutes. It was mid-July, so maybe I underestimated the heat and its effects. I used to hike in Arizona in 100+ degree heat, so I though I was used to it. Good Luck.

      I did that same loop in 2006. Awesome hike, but today I don't think the permit allows you to access both trails. You get a permit for either the Main Trail or North Fork. When I did it I had a permit for the main trail, and the North Fork did not require a permit. Though, I've been on both trails several times and never inspected by a ranger.
