This is something that I've always felt was painfully missing in AfterEffects. I've found times that I needed to fill that gap with custom expressions, but this is awesome. Now all AE needs to do is implement a node-based interface. :)
Love the easy way you explained that, thanks. Do you have a tutorial on creating on/off properties within the panel? Or one that shows how to create instances allowing style changes using a slider?
Great tutorial! Take care that if you are working with your “Fast Previews” set to “Fast Draft” the changes on Master Properties are not reflected in the comp viewer. You have to be at least in “Draft” mode.
Looks like a great addition to After Effects and I can see how it could be very useful once you get the hang of it and work it into your workflow. Thanks for the video!
Nice to see a quick overview of what Master Properties can do--but this seems like a pretty simplified example. You've still ultimately made four versions of the original comp. Surely the big advantage of Master Properties is that you can use multiple instances of a single comp in another "master" comp but alter it each time without having to duplicate the original..?
Yep, you're definitely right. That is a huge advantage to using Master Properties. We want to do a follow-up tutorial once the hype has died down about use cases like this.
I've been testing this out with rigged characters. Works great with only having to have ONE layer for a whole rigged character and just having the parameters that I need to animate, visible in the new comp. The only thing that bugs me is that you can't copy and paste keyframes in the new comp. I have a walk cycle and eye blinks that I want repeated, and I can't just copy-paste to extend it. I hope they fix that!
This can be useful when you are replicating the same thing over and over again, but don't want to lose your keyframes. Similar to the "override" feature in Sketch.
Thanks for teaching this, very helpful and time saving. I just got one problem, I can't figure out how to implement this with comps that has precomps inside other precomps. Does it in that case? Thanks!
I have a project where I have a different video clips with audio inside of a precomp. I want to be able to change the timing of when each clip starts playing, and do it with Master Properties (sometimes this clip is visible but needs to be paused, while a second clip plays). I have been able to add time remapping controls to the Master Properties, but now my problem is with the audio. When changing the time remapping on the clip itself in the source timeline, the audio follows the in/out key frames on time remapping, but when changing these values in the Master Properties, the audio does not change in time even though the picture does, and continues to play from the start of the comp. Any ideas on how to make this work?
if i wanted the box the middle triangle and the center square to always be the same color, could i somehow set a mastercolor that all these elements pull from?
I haven't tested this myself but perhaps in the master comp you could parent the color of two of those elements to the color of the third and use that third color property as the one that is in the Essential Graphics panel
This was pretty interesting, well explained. Just a bit slow for me: after changing properties on new comps once or twice I got the idea, no need to do it 10 times in a row ;)
I don't see anythig new from the esential graphics panel. Those HDTV channel people can just edit the mgrt in Premiere, why did you do 4 comps when you made them editable in Premiere or use a function to give them 4 options of color? I did not understand the difference, sorry
Hi i am trying to make a template for my glitch effect, but i cant seem to find out how i can change the image in the template, how can i makeit so that (who ever) uses the template can put in their own image on the template so the effects transfer to that one?
It's kinda tricky right now with Master Properties because you can't upload files to the master property project directly from premiere. I think your best bet would be to create an After Effects template.
oh okey, i have been trying to make template work (with out anyeffect) i am just trying to make it work so that i can change images inside the template (like i would be 3rd party) and i cannot seem to find out how to do it, i know how to make a template and drag all the compents that you could change as a 3rd party, but cant fiqure out how to makeit so that i can change pictures in this effect. (i use this effect a a lot on pictures and video)
Let me give you an advice... you should go straight to the point. This content could have been explained in 2 min actually. No need to be changing colours 4 times each time. Appart from that, thanks for the tut, look like this feature may have huge potential
I also disagree. His explanation was thorough and useful for showing the ways that the Master Properties can benefit any project. You're just too impatient to appreciate his approach to training.
It looks cool, but it just seems like more hassle than reward. You're hardly saving any time and most of the time the client only cares about the end product.
SNR1 yeah I'm also doubting this is the "innovation" we've needed ':D Seems like u could change it quicker by hand... And if you really have to design something modularly (I get it when projects get more complex this is often a must) why not use a layer with slider control etc and throw a expression on there... Can also be in different comps, in my mind you can see everything more clearly when u have Master control layers (u can hide and lock other stuff) and it's also very fast workflow-wise... I think Adobe really lacks meaningful updates in AE... I mean what they did to premiere this time is reeeally nice and maybe I'm wrong and this will be super awesome... But don't see it right now... I mean compare this to idk 'ray dynamic texture' or other plug-ins... That's a cool feature. But don't incorporate that one into vanilla ae, cuz I think that guy deserves every cent xD!!
I think this is really meaningful. There's no need to setup anything just click few buttons. The ability to duplicate the master comp and make it do other things without breaking the composition is genius!
Hmm maybe I have to watch the video again or try for myself... Can you setup shape layers' paths too? Or is it limited to color, text, transform properties?
I'd guess you cant change shapes with the current version. Although I believe MasterProperties will get better in future. Although you can get script called "hooker" from Aescripts and control shape of the shape layer through MasterProperties.
What that's a pro tip! The place where we really see Master Properties taking off is collaborative projects between senior and junior AE artists. They basically give you template-style controls without the hassle of learning a template's architecture. And of course, if you do a lot of lower thirds it could be helpful. We typically us the EGP in Premiere, but a lot of folks still batch render in AE.
Thanks, but you made this way more complicated than it needed to be. It would have been far easier if you had boiled this down to very simple examples instead of such a complicated and contrived storyline.
This is the best thing in AE i have ever seen. This saves me about 20 years of repetitive work for thousands of files. thank you
mind = BLOWN... How did this feature slip under my radar the last few years? What a time saver I reckon...
Thank you very much for this tip, was searching for this for years
Fantastic feature, possibilities are endless when you combine other options to it...
This is something that I've always felt was painfully missing in AfterEffects. I've found times that I needed to fill that gap with custom expressions, but this is awesome. Now all AE needs to do is implement a node-based interface. :)
This is game changing
Çok teşekkür ederim. Tam aradığım buydu :D
Great! Looking forward to implementing this feature between AE and Premiere Pro.
Thank you, Caleb for this informative tutorial! I can see why Master Properties is such a big deal.
this is Heaven. makes any projects so Ez 👌
Master Properties masterly explained by an awesome Master of motion graphics. Mind-blowing tutorial. Thanks!
Love the easy way you explained that, thanks.
Do you have a tutorial on creating on/off properties within the panel?
Or one that shows how to create instances allowing style changes using a slider?
Nice tutorial, thanks!
So helpful, thanks!
this is so dope. thank you for this!
Thanks for another brilliant breakdown, Caleb!
Thanks Ryan. Cheers -Caleb

You're really talented and a great teacher. Well done
Really Helpful Thanks School of Motion !!
An Amazing Tutorial! Super helpful, I learned a lot! Thank you !
this is great! thanks a lot
Looks like a great addition to After Effects and I can see how it could be very useful once you get the hang of it and work it into your workflow. Thanks for the video!
a trick : watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Adrien Maverick yea, have been watching on Flixzone} for months myself =)
@Adrien Maverick definitely, been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :)
@Adrien Maverick Yea, have been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself =)
@Adrien Maverick Definitely, have been using Flixzone} for years myself :)
Oh my god i've been needing something like this! I've been working in AE for 7 years now. never knew this.
Because it's new :)
Awesome!
Beautiful - thank you!
incredible. thank you
This is great! thanks for the breakdown!
No problem. We love this new feature.
Very useful ! thanks a lot

Looks good hopefully they let us copy master properties like any other transform property.
Thanks for teaching this, very helpful and time saving. I just got one problem, I can't figure out how to implement this with comps that has precomps inside other precomps. Does it in that case? Thanks!
took me a while to comprehend the concept, but its pretty useful
It would so awesome if you guys did a tutorial on how to make the SOM intro (0:00 - 0:09)! Please!! :)
coming soon!
Awesome! Looking forward to it and thanks so much!
Is this method sort of the same how prior people used NULLS to store such variables?
Change text - Right click "Source Text" then click "Edit Value." Thanks!

wow!
rockin
Hahha that client was ideal! they approved almost immediately on everything they received :)

Happy day

Kinda confusing the panel is named "Essential Graphics", could have been named master properties, would make more sense right

What is this, my master property is not added to effect of my composition, why?

He copied a brand new instance of a composition and then changed one thing inside there. How is that any different than the way it used to be?
How did you create your channel intro please reply me
涨知识~
谢谢
is this cc2018?can 2017 do this?
This is in 2018.
Sexy, no property compositions anymore, wuhu !
Let me give you an advice... you should go straight to the point. This content could have been explained in 2 min actually. No need to be changing colours 4 times each time. Appart from that, thanks for the tut, look like this feature may have huge potential
Thanks for the feedback. Cheers!
strongly disagree! this thorough example is super helpful to someone unfamiliar with the applied process.
