I wanted to do a video talking about one of the care items that I use for taking care of my boat and fishing equipment. I learned about this product from a friend and decided to try it myself. The product is called Salt Away. It is a concentrate that is designed to wash your boat and equipment removing the corrosive salt buildup for being in salt water.

Man that beach cart trick is gold!! I’ve got one that I never use also and despise carrying all my gear back to the garage and cleaning my rods and reels and gear. I’m for sure doing this now.

Dude this is awesome! I've been looking for something like this. Still learning the salt game as I've been a freshwater guy my whole life until this year. You should offer some kind of contest to go fishing with you, I have my own boat but I need to go with someone that knows what they're doing in Virginia saltwater fishing, Again great video! I just got some of this stuff for the winter. Purchased a new vehicle and figured it can't hurt to rinse the car down periodically during the winter on those days it's above freezing just to get all that salt off.

I cut down a 55 inch barrel to 29 inches and put my motor in that. I add the salt away and let it run for 10 minutes. Then I rinse it. If you get a blue barrel, you can actually see the salt in the bottom of the barrel.
Good stuff, remember when 1st came oit mid 90's at west marine and help on couple 2 stokes performance!! They purred up!

I was watching a video by a guy named Dave I believe where he conducted an experiment removing his heads on a Yamaha to examine the cooling passages. He was not impressed with Salt Away and got better results from another product (Redlyme or something like that). Salt Away left a lot of salt deposits and he flushed while he had is thermostats out to keep a clear passage. He also removed and examined his anode ports on the heads. It was pretty clear that Salt Away wasn't strong enough to attack the deposits and get in the nooks and crannies of the passages. He ran the tests with the motor warmed up as well as a two hose set up with one going to the static flush port and the other to earmuffs. He also used a bucket and recirculating pump to do a thorough soaking while the engine ran.
Salt a way breaks down salt and a descaler redlyme is to break down calcium and calcium bicarbonate which is what shells and sand are made of
@@troyb9609 We use those on outboard. They have limited impact. You would damage the aluminum if you had a strong enough solution to fully dissolve the encrusted salt which has been heat baked into the metal. These are larger boats that live on the salt water. It is a major effort and expense to pull them so that flushing can be attempted certainly not something that is going to get done after every outing! Cast iron parts have to be completely disassembled and soaked in an acid bath. The loss of metal is a big factor in the corrosion process leading to premature failure.

I would like to add a bit if I may. Every outboard out there recommends at least 15 min. of flush time. So even if you are using salt away. Make sure you flush for the full 15 min. If you want to flush for longer it will not hurt anything. Just always flush with clean water at the end. IE: 5 min of salt away & 10 min of pure water. 10 min of salt away, 5 min water. 15 min salt away 5 min of fresh water. Always end with water for a minimum of 5 min. (longer does not hurt here either) No matter what flush agent you use, it has something that is eating the mineral deposits. Most of the time it is a weak acid of one kind or another. This acid over time will do damage. Even vinegar will eat aluminum, end with water. If you do not the acid will end up pitting your motor, just like the salt will, you just will not run into low flow and heat issues. Let's face it repair costs are high, parts are expensive and down time is time off the water. That extra 5-10 min with water at the end will save you money and time in the long run.

@@SouthernReelsFishing Salt away will not tell you what their active ingredient is. I can tell you that it is slightly acidic PH is 6.2 (when mixed as directed) , a PH of 7.0 is neutral. To put that into perspective vinegar has around a 2.6 - 3.5 PH depending on the vinegar. There is also corrosion inhibitors in salt away. Salt as a mineral can not be eaten by a chemical. It is water soluble, so it will dissolve in water or any other salt away type of liquid. But once the liquid dries the salt will remain. That is why flushing will get rid of it. It pushes the dissolved salt out of the motor. The acidic nature just speeds up the process of dissolving the salt into the liquid solution. Three elements are required to create corrosion, A corrodible material, Oxygen and Moisture. Salt holds moisture which is why you see corrosion with salt deposits. Two of the three elements are impossible to remove from an outboard motor. Oxygen and a corrodible metal... So the inhibitors create a barrier on the metals surface that reduces the amount of moisture that can sit on the metal. (like WD-40 on steel).

From all I’ve read people wash the boat first then spray this on as the last step and don’t rinse it off. Will definitely have to try it.
No point if you wash the boat first. Always rinse the product off. Main benefit of this product is for your motor.

I will be taking my pontoon boat up the Neuse River in NC and that is really brackish water. I will be using a public boat launch to both launch and recover. There is no water faucet to hook a hose up to for at minimum an initial flushing with just plain no salt water. My thought is to have a couple gallons of mixed salt away and water and with a funnel get it down the two flush ports I have on my Suzuki 150. Once I complete the 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive home, I will go through the full de-salinization process properly.
What are your thoughts on my plan??
Nice video and boat. Great idea about the pier cart too. Might have to pick one up . Do you wash the boat down (hull mainly) before you apply the salt away and should you rinse it after or just let it dry?
Thanks! I apply the salt away first then go to washing as normal after that. Flushing the engine and washing all the rear components down with it are my main concern.
I just use this product for my jet ski was kind of clogged before the water spot on the side was only dripping
I'll let run for couple minutes and left the product overnight and flush next morning really works

I have a 4 stroke. Instead of using the "headphones" as you call it, can I just attache it to the garden hose on the side of the engine? Would appreciate your feedback, thanks again.
What I was told by the dealer is to use the headphones because it follows the natural path of the sea water as it comes in. Also it flushes the water pump and the full engine coolant system better as well
I always use a ton of that stuff when we get back in. I guess I need to ease of a little. 😁

I used a non salt away garden hose mixer and it ran through the clear container (similar size to the salt away mixer) very quickly say 45 seconds did it hurt my motor running a strong mix of this stuff through one time?
i have left over in clear mixer (water is blue), do you just plug it to the hose next time and contineu to use it?
Awesome review! I use this stuff every trip for the boat, trailer, rods and gear too. I put some in spray bottle (Diluted at 20%) and spray on wheels and brakes after launching the boat. Have you used it in a garden sprayer? Wondering what the dilution ratio is for a 1 Gal sprayer.
I have not but I have seen some folks at the boat ramp doing so...
This May be a dumb question but do you run freshwater after the salt away or should in the left with a Soapy coating inside the motor and On the exterior of the boat/interior

I have never NOT used this every day I pull my boat out of salt water. Salt away is better than the rest and I never have corrosion issues because of it...22 years with a vessel!!💯

You don't need a boat if you live in an area that salts the roads you can use this stuff for cleaning your car. Cleaning your plowing equipment your snow blower etc.

I dont flush the motor with just water after treatment. I only rinse the boat and gear and the outside of the motor

I was not aware that you can run Salt Away through the motor. I use it to clean my boat but only run freshwater through my motor after I come in from fishing. My boat is in a slip, I don't take it out of the water. I use the rinse hose on the side of the motor. I would not have access to the area you are attaching to. I live on Long Island NY.

Thanks! For some outboards you shouldn't run the motor with the water hooked to the flush port. They say the water pump may not get enough water and the impeller could get damaged.

I kept my ‘00 Seadoo gti 20 years from new in nothing but salt water and used this every day I pulled it out of salt water. Yes definitely!!
How does your van do towing your boat? What engine does it have etc....
It did very well actually. It is a 2006 3500 with a Duramax though so that really helped.
I love this stuff but the clear container is either leaking or over tightened and cracked. I really with they would redesign the set up. It works great other than that. I have been using it for a decade on my motor, trailer, reels and truck
It does that every time, all I have to do is loosen it and then re tighten it and it works fine after that

No not necessary. Kayak is mostly plastic... I just use Simple Green on it

The most important thing with salt flushing your engine is to do it religiously from the very first time your boat hits the water and to also let your motor run for a nice long time while flushing. It needs a good 15 min i think. I have no science backing this up though mostly just fisho folk lore
All of this is true, except the time required rule. My particular motor will overheat if run longer than 10 minutes on a hose headphone setup in the summer...

The only thing that sucks about that is Suzuki and Yamaha are really not supposed to be ran with muffs they are very temperamental I need to run them with 55-gallon drum cut in half they've been known to overheat on muffs but since you're not really running it for long you should be okay
I only do 10 minutes on average. Just enough for the thermostat to open and for the rinse to get about 30 seconds of run time.
Don't drop the mixer either. That plastic is super fragile. I also dislike the green turn knob. When it's wet, it is very slippery. It's overall a lousy design...but it works.

Bubba. That salt away does zero to salt. Its a gimik like slick50 and pb blaster.. Do a before and after flush by pulling thermos or anodes and you will see the only thing it does is turn the salt blue.. Sorry man but its just a proven thing about the stuff. Much better products out there.

So you are saying that you would run Dawn Dish washing Detergent through your $18000 outboard engine?
I’m with you bud, in Australia it’s morning fresh dishwashing liquid and there’s thousands of outboards that never leave the salt and still last 3000plus hours.
