    Soften the butter in the wax paper it comes wrapped in , Then transfer to the Butter Bell using the back side of the wax paper keeping your hands clean. You will have much less clean up in the end.

      Yes, but then you don't get to lick the spoon. (Grin!) With artificial, butter-flavored grease, this might not be so appealing, but with fresh, grassfed butter, mmmm!

    Alternate method: fill the bell with cold chunks of butter. Place the cylinder over it so the whole thing is upside-down. After the butter softens, smoosh it down with the back of a spoon, invert, and place in the cylinder you have no filled with the right amount of water.

    • @sweetcanada17
      @sweetcanada17 7 лет назад

      Mae Zeppa - that defeats the purpose of this thing. The point of the water is to prevent critters, bacteria, mould and other things to get to the butter.
      The way you described it, you may as well just use a traditional American butter dish. Something like in these pictures: www.google.ca/search?q=butter+dish&rlz=1CDGOYI_enCA640CA640&hl=en-US&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic9KGt29fVAhUKjVQKHUwJAkcQ_AUIESgB&biw=375&bih=591

    Thanks! I knew what it was, but didn't know how to use it. And there is the possibility of the butter falling into the water if it's not pushed into the bell real good. I thought it odd to hang it upside down into the water, but that's how it's kept fresh.

    • @DavidsTutorials
      @DavidsTutorials  6 лет назад

      LOL! I once asked my brother-in-law to fill the butter bell while we were doing other things making dinner. He didn't understand the need to press it in and the next morning when we tried to use it - the butter was in the water! Fortunately, it was fresh, clean water.

      Thanks, Pappy! Since making this video, I also use a second room-temperature server, but my second container is a standard butter dish. I use the butter bell for getting butter to spread on foods, and I use the butter dish for butter for cooking. @@IdratherbeinHobbiton Hey, here's something I have not yet put up as a video (but I might soon) - the absolute BEST grilled cheese sandwiches are made with (real) sourdough bread. If you can find it. Not the kind that simulates sourdough by adding vinegar to the recipe, but the real kind like from San Francisco, made with a rennett starter. Generous (real) button on both outsides, and you can add other things if you like (such as a sprinkling of dill weed or some thin-sliced tomato), but just a plain ol' grilled cheese on real sourdough is to die for. Restaurant-worthy - but they won't do that because most restaurants think grilled cheese is for kids and make it the cheapest way possible. I think Cracker Barrel restaurants used to have good sourdough, but I haven't checked in the last few years. Try your grilled cheese this way and let me know what you think. Take care.

    Cool to see tutorials and useful info from an older guy like yourself, gives me hope if I ever reach your age. I'm considering buying a butter bell since some of my butter went bad in a glass tupperware container after I left it out for a week not knowing as much about butter as I thought.
    Apparently butter in a butter bell can last up to 30 days? but that is to say, do you have to wash it out every 20-30 days or whenever you empty it? or do you just keep adding new butter when you get low? I feel as though if my butter went bad, any small remnant in the dish could go bad even if the bulk was newer.
    My grandparents always had their butter in a covered dish on the counter, I never noticed my grandmother washing it, but their butter never went bad, so I was very surprised when my own did.

    • @DavidsTutorials
      @DavidsTutorials  3 года назад +4

      You should change the water in the bell every 2 to 3 days, and other commenters have said it's good to add a bit of salt to the water to help keep out bacteria. We all keep learning, and YT is a great place to share what we learn.

      It is always a question whether to add music or not. Sometimes it makes a video better, sometimes it just gets in the way. I know people out there in RUclips land feel strongly both ways. I'm still undecided, and much depends on the content of the video.

    I have this butter bell for 3 weeks now I went to store for less bought it $ 1.99 I was looking for small sugar jar it was taped off so when I got home I removed the tape it's something I never seen before. I put sugar in it anyway and ant's still crawl into it. I know that is not for sugar use. So for some reason I look the bottom of the jar this morning while eating breakfast. This is what I found out it is for butter use lol. I'm sure will enjoy my Butter Bell from now on thank you for the Info.

    I grew up with this and absolutely love it and don't understand anyone who doesn't use one. Occasionally in the summer though I will stick it in the fridge. They keep fruit flies and moths from getting stuck on your butter...though I'm sort of guessing and going from what I've seen at other people's homes who don't use a bell. Strange I never actually knew the name for it, butter bell, I just called it butter cup,lol.

    I'm not sure if you can help. I've bought a Butter Bell from Amazon and shipped it back because the lid doesn't sit flush with the container. My replacement is the same way, are the lids suppose to rock back and forth? Thank you

    • @DavidsTutorials
      @DavidsTutorials  8 месяцев назад

      Hi, Amyk5260. When the first one I had broke, I bought a replacement on Amazon. The bell did not fit inside the well, and I returned it. The next one wobbles a bit when in place, but not bad enough to replace it. If I have to replace this one, I think I'll go to a flea market or a thrift store, where I can actually put hands on the thing to see its quality before purchasing it. If the one you have wobbles just a bit when put together, I'd say that's no big deal. But if it truly rocks back and forth, I'd send it back and write a scorching review on the product, warning others not to buy this item unless they are okay with shoddy workmanship. I don't like being negative, but if it keeps someone else from feeling they wasted their money, I feel it's better to let them know.

    • @DavidsTutorials

      No. The water never touches the butter. There's an air bubble trapped inside the bell, so you only need enough water to seal against the rim of the bell.

      Hi, LarenaWalsh3554! You should be sure the bell is dry before mashing the butter into it. That way, the butter will stick to the smooth ceramic of the bell and won't detach and go into the water. Good luck and have fun!

      I think as long as the butter is not liquid, it will stay in the bell. The key is to press it firmly into the bell so there is no air gap on the sides or bottom. Try it and see.

    • @Broken_robot1986
      @Broken_robot1986 9 лет назад +2

      @Ainslee Umlah Nah yo, the water doesn't touch the butter. There is a bubble of air between them. Imagine or test by filing a big bowl with water, and then putting a see-through glass into the bowl upside down. You;ll see the water does not go up, into the glass unless you let air escape.

    • @DavidsTutorials
      @DavidsTutorials  3 года назад

      Ainslee, Christopher is correct. If you have a large transparent glass, fill it 2/3 with water, then invert a smaller (empty) transparent glass and push it gently down on the water in the bigger glass. You'll see how the air in the smaller glass keeps the water out. Sorry for the delay in responding (it's a YT thing), but I do appreciate your comment.

    Wait, what do you mean "it will displace the water"? If I put too much water, i.e.: higher than the most outer layer of the butter in the bell, won't the butter submerge into the water? ... Or is butter supposed to be submerged; and of so, won't the butter begin to mix into water?

    • @DavidsTutorials
      @DavidsTutorials  5 лет назад

      Nope, not at all. To check it out put water into a glass bowl, then turn a small clear glass upside down and push it down into the water. You'll see the water does not go into the glass.
