    When I was in the U.S. Coast Guard I went from an east coast duty station to Station Lorain, Ohio, which was a search and rescue station. One night we got our 41 foot UTB underway for a flare sighting. It was so rough that we did a snap roll and broke the mounts of the mast. I never worked so hard as a coxwain to keep us from going over, and a few times I was thinking to myself that we weren't going to make it back. Lake Erie is indeed a cruel and unpredictable body of water.

    As a subscriber who grew up on Lake Erie, I appreciate and approve of all of your Great Lakes stories!
    Something you ought to know about Lake Erie…the Erie Quadrangle. It runs across the lake, bracketing the Presque Isle peninsula off the city of Erie and the Long Point peninsula in Ontario. The two peninsulas pinch the lake in like a waist, causing the lake’s currents to shift. If you look at a map of shipwrecks in the lake, you’ll see that more have sunk in the Quadrangle than in the rest of Lake Erie combined.

    • @refluxcatalyst7190
      @refluxcatalyst7190 2 дня назад +3

      That's also because that's where the most traffic is/was. I'm a sailor out of Erie, and it can be TREACHEROUS all of a sudden, but your "quadrangle" is also the entirety of the East Basin, and the only deep part of the lake.

      The Great Lakes do not get that name for nothing. The Bay of Biscay is a nasty part of water. See it on a global map it may not seem like much. But many have lost their lives there.

      I don't feel bad for him, quite the opposite, maybe he should have been a little smarter and done what every other captain there was doing and wait out the storm. His ego is what killed his whole crew, I mean the ship was trashed in just a matter of hours, it also wouldn't surprise me if he was the first person to abandon ship onto the life boat from the time the ship started sinking and made up a fantastic story of nearly drowning to gain some sympathy.

    I kayak on lake Erie often, and yeah, no matter what time of year, the mood of the lake can change *real* fast. Even today with modern weather forecasting, you still can't be 100% sure what you'll encounter. The Great Lakes are so large that they generate their own weather, and sometimes pretty quickly at that. I can only imagine how much more lonely and hopeless the crews of those ships felt over a century ago without radio or proper safety gear. RIP to those brave souls.

    My family had a boat growing up, and we spent some time fishing on Lake Erie. I remember there was an underwater ship wreck east of Kelly's Island that we would try to get out to and get some good fishing in. That wreck was what got me hooked on reading and watching these great lakes disaster stories. It still amazes me that the lakes can bring down such massive ships. Later, we watched an ore carrier load up behind Cedar Point in Sandusky Bay.

    The great lake's are definitely like the ocean, except for the salt. As a kid, growing up in Michigan, we would take trips to South Haven Michigan and swim in lake Michigan. Back in the 70's, when i was seven, i was caught up in an under tow, and everytime i thought i was gonna make it back, I'd get pulled further out as i was pulled under water. Thankfully my mom noticed, and was able to get someone to swim out to bring me back to shore, it was pretty scary. I once heard a sailor say that the water of the great lake's tried to kill him, and after seeing the carnage of the past, i tend to agree with him. I have gone on trips to Northern Michigan travelling over the Mackinac bridge, and the wind has at time's felt like it was gonna carry the car away. A lot of people aren't aware of how dangerous these lake's can be, i suppose that's why i am always interested in the history of the many shipwrecks.
    Thanks for all the time and effort you put into telling these stories while having respect for the loss of life, whether on the lake's, or out in the ocean.
    G-d bless.

      Cedar point is on a peninsula on the mainland just north of Sandusky, Put-in-Bay is actually on South Bass Island. They're relatively close (15 miles or so) and a ferry that runs between them, but they're not the same. I've sailed between them many times, and it can take a good 2 hours to get from cedar point to Put-in-Bay
      But yes, cedar point offers pretty good protection for Sandusky harbor, and probably would offer even better protection if the cedars for which it was named weren't mostly cut down

      There's a photo of the schooner J. T. Wing passing under the Blue Water Bridge (Port Huron - Point Edward/Sarnia) in 1939 or 1940. There's another photo that I can't find. It shows a steel freighter and a schooner at the bridge. The first Blue Water Bridge was completed in 1938, so that's pretty late as far as schooners. I'm not sure how late they sailed, maybe 1950s. (btw, A second span was constructed in the 1990s; the first is still going strong)..

    The Merida, when she was built, was an experimental design. She was built with her engines amidships unlike most other freighters with their engines aft.

    I used to own a little place on the shore of Ontario, and one night a storm popped up, 20' surge. The next day, our 40'beach had literal tons of driftwood, dock foam, a Canadian coast guard radio, multiple dead fish, 2 tires, and no joke about 30,000 plastic tampon applicators. It was gross. Took me 5 or 6 solid weekends to clear that tiny shore.
