imagine the world of horror you would find yourself in after translating one of these signs, only to find the words
*"I'm a chuckster!"*
You think you hear breathing behind you - you turn around and see only a glimpse of a Pianta before being thrown through your living room window into the street below
At least signs don't throw you.
@@getajobmate1281That sounds fucking hilarious, frankly.
WOAH AHHHHHHHH!!
@@PositiveStellarLuckyAchiever Thats what the signs want you to think
I can't believe the alphabet is literally laid out from A to Z and yet nobody had made that connection.
From what I saw, "Hylian" in Breath of the Wild and ToTK are similar. They're literally written in english romanticized letters, but in a strange font that makes them appear unreadable. Most of them just saying what it says on the tin "like the Stables say "Stable" and the signs all say like "This way/That way". It's really cool how just using a goofy font can make an area feel so foreign yet familiar.
and then there's Tooth and Tail's spoken language which is a phoenic cipher...of english. Yet sounds like an east european language. People are so creative! We solved Tower of Babel.
Isn't it the Sheikah language in BoTW that's translatable? @@MarioMastar
there's a couple characters that have double uses, I can't remember what all of them are, but it's like maybe R and G use the same character. I think there's 3 or 4 Hylian characters like that. At least for botw/totk. The Hylian font is different in most of the zelda games.@@MarioMastar

I think it's pretty amazing that the brochure page was translated to use the letters for "Noki" instead of "Mare" for the English release.
Does the Japanese version's brochure translate to Mare? It may read Noki in all versions
(Edit) I should finish watching videos before commenting lol
@@gabs3147 It's ok. But yeah, that's exactly why I was impressed! They went to the effort to translate it presumably into English. It's impressive that such a small detail was caught for a 2002 Nintendo game, but even moreso that they changed it!
Someone on the localisation team had sharp eyes!
@@sonic2kk I think they were told about the alphabet by the devs as background info when given the game for translation
Mare is Italian for sea, and seeing how much Italian is in this game it's fair to assume that's part of it, which makes me wonder why they changed it to noki for western audiences.
@@TheFrantasticIf I had to guess, I'd say it's because "mare" is already a word in English (albeit with a different pronunciation), meaning a female horse, so using that name for the fictional creatures in the game might have caused confusion. Does make me wonder where they got the name "Noki" from though...

@@nottrevorallenLMAOOO THIS IS AMAZING

Um, actually 🤓, the gamecube doesn't use jpegs for compressions but pixel values that use much less bits than the common 8 bits per channel we use in the modern days. Most opaque textures are in RGB565 and translucent ones are in RGB5A3 in GC & Wii games.
@@RedStoneMatti will jpeg you.
Rather than waves, I think it is actually spirals akin to those found on some animal shells. Which would make sense for the Noki since they all have seashells on their backs.

It's definitely shells
great work!
Feeling a bit star struck here. You’ve been a big inspiration to me!
:00
Hi!
Yeaaaaahhahaha, Shesez! I've been thinking about you the whole time while watching this!
It's kind of insane how seemingly nobody has tried this before, especially considering this is basically the EXACT same thing people did for Splatoon several years ago. Considering how much Sunshine was brought up during at least the hype period of the first Splatoon game, it's a shock nobody thought to revisit these symbols.
If you wanna get the highest quality versions of the symbols for the game, maybe look around for any texture rips online. That way we can all just make sure for certain that the letters only found in the alphabet wall or the sign are 100% accurate.
Assuming you're the first person to work all this out, this deserves way more views. It's not every day you find something hidden in a twenty-year-old game.
For sure, I've already sent this to the only person I know who cares about Sunshine haha. Let's get this trending!
GameXplain sent me here
@@Chris__1Same lol
Same, I clicked their video to find the source in the description and came here. This video deserves the views.
Well, Gamexplain promoted it, so it's getting that.
5:21 just fyi and also on the subject of obscure Sunshine stuff: Mario can only hang from a ledge for about 15 seconds before trembling and falling off, I don't remember this mechanic explained on the manual, maybe there's an npc out there who tells you about it, but it's definitely intended and not a glitch.
Just a little bit of info in hope of defending one of my favorite games ever and Noki Bay, an area I really like, though I can see why this mechanic was removed in later games.
PS: the green bird pushing you out of the small "rest zones" is BS and I won't defend that.
Fun fact, that enemy's name is "Hatopop." There's a second version of it called "Puncher" that's just a boxing glove on a spring. There are only a total of 4 Hatopops and 2 punchers in the game.
Those things are so confusing, cus they make me want to scream from anger but also laugh, cus it's kinda funny
Maybe the Nokis installed them to deter raiders from stealing important artifacts from their homes?
This has got me thinking that we need a Dolphic Font ASAP
I'm probably looking WAY too deep into this but as a History nerd i can't help but think having both dolphic & regular scripts was inspired by the fact that if you look at the history of most Mediterranean islands (ESPECIALLY those in the East like Crete & Cyprus for example) they've almost always had 2 separate scripts in common usage by large numbers of ppl. Just for crete alone during the minoans they had hieroglyphs & an Alphabet used separately, then during Roman & later Venetian rule both Greek & Latin alphabets were widely used, then during Ottoman times it was Arabic & Greek, and lastly nowadays both English & Greek Alphabets are widely seen & used. It's almost certainly just a coincidence but i suppose you never know
I definitely hope this isn’t a coincidence
Nintendo LOVES to make incredibly hidden secrets and references. As an example, the names of shrines in TotK or BotW - I forget which - are based on actual shrines in a Japanese city (I again forget which lol). So I have a feeling this actually was done on purpose
That's not a coincidence because it's more or less like a recurring idea, right ? I don't know much about History and what you're talking about, nonetheless it's a pretty common idea for me and maybe for the collective subconscious that some islands will use both international and local languages.
@@SomeGalNamedEveThe city is Kyoto! (which is also where their HQ is located)
Dude this is freaking mindblowing I've played this game dozens of times and never thought about those symbols actually meaning something.
dummy
It always amazes me that even after 2 decades, people are still able to find new stuff in Mario Sunshine! You deserve more views 🙌🙌
Wow. I came across your video today via an article on a website called Nintendo Life. At first I was extremely sceptical that you'd found meaning behind a seemingly random set of squiggles, but within minutes your methodical approach had me utterly convinced.
Absolutely amazing. Great to see that the video seems to be gaining traction.
All the best!
Bro same wtf came from the same website
@@randomnugget7750 Hahh, small world, man! 😄
@@neilt82 yeah fr it's cool tho because I see websites always linking small RUclipsrs now pretty cool honestly
Here I was thinking “wow how much did they pad this video to stretch this to nine minutes?” That was refreshingly concise and really interesting!
It’s not every day I find someone as obsessed with inconsequential lore and details in video games as I am, but god is it a good day when I do.
These are the best videos. They keep a 20-30 year game alive to this day.
You could've easily extended this into yet another 30 minute video essay with tons of filler, but you more or less mostly only talked about the important stuff and got straight to the point. Awesome work my man, I'd love to see more content like this. Cool mystery, too.
This is what gives videos like this an instant like. Fun and easy to listen to but gets straight to the point. No wonder RUclips had a hard cap of 10 -15 minutes on videos long ago. While I don't mind playing a 30 minute or hour long lets play or continuous documentary, Nothing's worse than watching a 20 minute video about "Have you ever noticed why this coin is blue?" and it's just literally a lighting thing but they spend FOREVER talking about their childhood and other games unrelated and Raid Shadow Legends unironically being the best game ever. (and if you don't have adblock, there's like 10 2 minute ads across the video).
rztu bod tvr をJISキーボード配列に当てはめても「すつかな こらし かひす」になるだけで、特に意味はなさそう
Google Translated to english because why not:
"Even if you apply it to the JIS keyboard layout, it just becomes ``sutsuna korashi kahisu'', which doesn't seem to have any particular meaning."
It's a coherent sentence at least so maybe it's accurate. Very fitting for the video lol
Lazy ass, this is an english speaking video for an english speaking audience. Take the damn time to translate your shit
@@Lokoloi OP is saying that the phrase "Sutsukana korashi kahisu" (the equivalent Japanese characters on a keyboard to the letters on the sign) means absolutely nothing in Japanese.
If there is a meaning, it remains solely in the head of whoever wrote the sign.
@@TSDT I GOT IT!
After digging around with ChatGPT and searching Google in Japanese, it seems like the phrase might be something like "A tragic end. Turn around." The first two words, "sutsukana" and "korashi", could connect poetically to words with darker tones, namely "tragedy" and "killing". The third one, "kahisu", could connect to "kahinashi" which is similar to "useless", "ineffective", or "there's nothing I can do". So I tried to put things together given the context ◉‿◉
This is so cool!
Yeah, I immediately assumed that that sign said "Gelado." Because it's very close to "Gelato" Beach and could be a typo
Never played this game but managed to be engaged in a video about a squiggly wiggly language from it. Therefore, this is art.
Oh my god I love this game so much, thank you for sharing this with us. I find ciphers to be a TON of fun and had a really good time following along, also because I happen to be Italian myself. I was shouting "PARCO!!!!!!!!!!" at the screen once I pieced it together, shortly before hearing you confirm it too. It's incredible that such a mystery has apparently not been solved by the fanbase until this moment!!
This is awesome! You did a great job of sleuthing this one out, what an incredible secret. I can only imagine the feeling of euphoria you had when you parsed out "Viking" and the other subsequent words only to find that it was totally 100% intentional on the developer's part. That localization change from Noki to Mare on the map screen absolutely sealed the deal for me. Very cool mystery, thanks for sharing it.
It may be from playing the game so much, but I can read Gelato and Parco easily. I think I realized those signs weren't gibberish when I noticed that the Sand Cabana sign is different on the Japanese version (where Gelato Beach is called "Mamma Beach"). Props for figuring out "viking" and noticing the alphabet frieze tho
(Also why does everyone think the ledge drop thing is a glitch? It's like the whole challenge of these ledge sections, and the reason why they give you spaces to get up and rest on the way across!)
Actually I think the glitch he is referring to is him being unable to move across the ledge at all. I recently tried out the Sunburn mod, and noticed that I couldn't go across the ledge like I remember being able to, once the ledge angles up or down, mario just gets stuck there. I don't remember it being like that at ALL in the original GCN version, so I can only imagine its some sort of emulation glitch (or a version difference, and the emulation uses an older glitchier version), and considering he is playing the Switch 3D All Stars version, it must also be that way. I also think the people assume the dropping is a glitch because there is no animation to show him getting tired. But this is also something I don't remember having a problem with in the original. As a kid it was clear to me that you had a set time to stay on the ledge before Mario tires out and drops. So I can only assume there used to be some sort of animation to show that, which is broken in the emuation and not playing, making the drop off seem glitchier than it should be.
Discovering new info about a 22 year old game. Good job!
I've seen multiple people in this comment section suggesting using the 3D All Stars version to get a better look at the textures which is weird because this video already uses the 3D All Stars version for footage outside of footage from the Japanese version
Holy cow! I'm stunned nobody has been even close to what you've done. Here's hoping maybe looking at a texture dump or something like the hd port we can get a definitive alphabet. Very exciting. We may not know that the book in the mystery of noki Bay is but turns out it had a linguistic secret to share anyway
Casually finding a hidden language in SMS is insane. Love the way you look at this game.
I’ve been waiting 20 long years for this video 🥹
Sunshine content with Ace Attorney music is the fastest way into my heart. Oh, and uh, nice discovery too, I guess
I guess?
Congrats for essentially being one of if not the first to solve the cipher.
This is crazy, it deserves WAY way more views. Maybe it wasn't the most pressing mystery in video games, and maybe you haven't revolutionized SMS with this discovery, but just the fact that this is in the game at all is crazy. I live for this kind of weird, niche content.
Wow this was really interesting! It's a shame the sign doesn't seem to translate to anything (maybe it was just testing the script they came up with?), but the other logos and text all make perfect sense, and it was interesting to finally understand what they meant here. Hopefully someone creates a font based on these characters at some point too, it'd be interesting to be able to play around with it in fan art, videos, mods, etc as well.
Either way, great job with the video!
Given the context, it looks like it may have been the code name for a chip in the gamecube as Sunshine was a launch title for it. They always throw little easter eggs in there like that to reference the technology that made it possible. Could also be the first initials or last initials of the group of devs who worked on the graphics based on hierarchy. We'll never know but it's kind of fun to speculate since we got THIS far and I doubt it's completely random given the location of the keys on the keyboard would be awkward to randomly type in that order.
This video should have like 100k views, I had no idea this was actually a language in the game! Such a cool and surprising piece of trivia. I even remember that specific moment in the Boundary Break video you mentioned too, thinking I bet there's something to it but never realized there was enough in the game to piece most or even all of it together. I bet there are higher quality versions of the symbols stored somewhere in the game's data. Would be so cool to having a working SMS font one day.
Kudos for figuring this out, always love to learn something new about games and even more so when it's about not only my beloved Sunshine, but also languages which are one of my biggest non-gaming passions!
Will definitely check out your other Sunshine videos and your channel in general when I have the time!
it's a shame that gamexplains low effort video just relaying this info already has more views
well i am proud of my youtube algorithm for recommending the original B)
Let me guess, they didn't credit the original video?
@@PixiuchuI haven't seen their video, but I'm pretty sure they always credit when they do these kinds of videos. It's just that after finding out there's no reason to go watch the original video. Its why reaction content is actually harmful, although to be fair, simply reporting the news isn't reaction content.
Shame that GameXplain low effort videos get more views than anything
I'm so glad that this topic was its own video rather than waiting to be investigated in the main GBD videos. Great work, delivered excellently as always. You have a way of making videos thorough and well-paced.
Thanks for doing what you do.
i know you said in another video that you didn't come up with this all on your own, but i'm amazed you were the first person to go in-depth in this on video (and possibly even the first to decipher the whole alphabet). i'm not sure if i'm more amazed at this or that it took 22 years for someone to do it. either way, kudos to you!
i hope this video gets way more views than it has now. so underrated.
Super cool video! This reminds me a lot of the ARKS language used in Phantasy Star Online, where a lot of the symbols look like their latin counterparts and you can sometimes just read it if you squint a bit. When you pointed out that the sign said "Gelato" I couldn't unsee that it actually LOOKS like it says it in just a really weird Latin font lol.
This is wild, I actually noticed the Viking thing forever ago. When I was younger I *only* figured out the word Viking and did, in fact, assume the rest was gibberish and that they just made the swirls for this particular sign say Viking for fun. I'm both surprised and really impressed by this video, and I congratulate you for figuring out something that no one else put the time and effort into.
Random side note, in my head I always called this ride in SMS the "Viking Voyager" based off of a viking-themed swinging boat ride at Worlds of Fun. Buuuut the swinging boat ride I was thinking of is actually called the Sea Dragon. Viking Voyager is a log flume ride nearby lol. So I stumbled onto Viking pretty much by luck.
Super interesting, and very well done!
This is such a cool find! Honestly, I hope Did You Know Gaming hears about it so they can feature it in a future video and credit you for it 😄
It was so satifying that the entire alphabet was laid out, but you could only make out what it was because you already had figure out the detailed shapes from other places. Fantastic video!
I was always kind of curious about this language as a kid but never expected there to be anything to it. This is such a cool find, thank you for your work and the great video! I really hope the algorithm picks this up! :)
This is some of my favorite stuff in games
Inkling language, hylian language and now dolphic language
This is amazing. This NEEDS to be seen by more people! You have earned a sub.
the fact that the brochure localized mare to noki means there was absolutely a design sheet somewhere. WHY DIDNT THEY PUT IT IN THE MANUAL OR SOMETHING JUST FOR FUN
So happy my favorite mario game has new stuff been discovered :').
This is absolutely fascinating! I never would’ve guessed it was actually a translatable language, this is so awesome! Many of the letters do look a lot like English characters, and it’s really interesting that some of this correspond to Italian letters.
Dude, your presentation deserves a LOT more subs. I just found you now and I'm glad I did.
Loved this video, as an SMS speedrunner, I might use its language for a tattoo in the future, thanks for your effort!
An absolutely incredible discovery! I'm actually in awe that this has finally been discovered.
instant subscribe, you’ve worked something out i couldn’t do in 20 years!!!!!!!!!
An awesome find! It's crazy that nobody wanted to dig further on this just because that one sign was gibberish. Clearly there were other more-intentional glyph placements, as you proved.
By the way, maybe you could share a transparent image of the Dolphic symbols you've made? I imagine somebody might enjoy taking them and forming them into a font or something!
Top ten video of all RUclips tbh. Mom get the camera.
Great video! Very concise and the editing was great! Hope it blows up!
This video is gonna pop off once the algorithm picks it up. We'll done dude!
Interpreting those compressed textures was impressive on its own
This reminds me that I, once again, need to go and decipher the moth priest script from Elder Scrolls. The wiki for that script says "well, it has more than 26 letters so it's impossible" and I'm just like "...have none of you dinguses ever heard of the International Phonetic Alphabet? Or just, like... literally any alphabet besides the Latin alphabet??" Bc the number of unique glyphs in that cipher matches up perfectly with the IPA
This is a really well made video! I'd wager the vast majority of people who have played Sunshine have never given this text a second thought but you've ensured I'll be paying careful attention to it next time I play it.
Dude. This is seriously impressive. Way to go.
Wow! Great work! I nver even put much thought into this. But you sure got me excited!
wow, that is incredible. I admire your determination not to be sold on Sunshine’s swirly alphabet being gibberish, which ended up being the language of the Nokis/Mare, that’s pretty cool! Makes me curious of some other games now that also appear to use gibberish on signs and some textures like Paper Mario, I’m intrigued in taking a deeper dive myself now so thank you for that!
Of course the Mario game most connected to Splatoon has a translatable in-universe language. Splatoon's dozens of scripts is just the natural (or, uh. I guess not entirely natural, given the lore of Alterna lmao) evolution of Dolphic. Viddy games is the same! Good stuff
I've played the game since release and never thought this was a language, let alone could be translated. Incredible work!
This is so fascinating! I really thought I knew everything there was to know about this game but your discovery is so exciting! I genuinely got chills when it turned out the brochure symbols for noki/mare bay had been changed to accommodate the language differences. That seems to really confirm that you're right about which letters you've matched with each other! And this video was presented in such a good way! So much kudos to you!
im obsessed with sms, literally know sm about it since ive been playing for 18 years, but this is amazing. i love finding new things, thank you
I always had a slight curiosity about these symbols but never even thought to try deciphering them. This is really great stuff!
I was on the edge of my seat with this and I was so satisfied. My gosh this is just great. I love that you saw these symbols and said there has to be a meaning and you found it! It just makes me really happy. Well done you.
Not sure why prompted the youtube gods to send this into my suggested feed but I am sure glad they did.
Man, to think this has been kept under wraps for so long...
Nice to see that someone has finally taken it upon themselves to unearth this mystery!
I like that you said the language resembles waves to represent the noki, but I think that the swirls are the spirals of their shells!!
Wow incredible work figuring this out!! I can't believe this video has so few views, this is a great find!

This is amazing! And all of this was right under our noses (somewhat literally with Mario's nose and the alphabet in Noki Bay lol), yet no one actually put together all the pieces until now. Great find! Thank you for this video!
Amazing! It's easy to assume that the internet has simply figured everything out by now, but that's far from the truth. "Never assume you're too late to the party" - I completely agree! Great work.
It's so cool that you took the time to look this up and figure it out - plus make a kickin' fun video about it. Great job!

I'm SURE that's an id for something since Sunshine was a launch game for the gamecube.
I apreciate that you properly called this a cipher.

Brilliant detective work! One of the best things about this video is that if you rewatch it, you can actually read Dolphic 😄
Amazing work! All these years after it was made. What a game!
I'm surprised it took so long for people to figure this one out considering how similar a lot of the words look. The letters really aren't changed that much. Especially on Gelato.
Was a fun watch, props on figuring it out.
Bro this is waaayyyyy too cool. First time seeing this, you’ve earned my sub!
What a phenomenal find! Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite video game and I think this detail enhances it that much more. It deepens Sunshine's already rich worldbuilding, as well as enhancing the pre-established themes of tourism's negative impact on hot destinations, this time from a more cultural angle though rather than an environmental one. It's stuff like this that makes me love Super Mario Sunshine. The care the devs put into making the island feel like a real, grounded place is something no other Mario game can even come close to.
