A tip to mesuare the correct level of oil that I use with my RE Classic is, put the bike on the footrest, wait a minute so the oil can move then put the bike again in the stand and you will see the correct level of oil in the marks.
Thanks a lot, seen on an ipad while on my knees with my GT535, this was as if there was a friend telling me what to do. 🫶🏼👍🏼 You should do so much more of this!!!
I have a 2013 model exactly like that one, in the Forest Green color. I bought it new. I have converted mine to an Amal carburetor using a kit from Hitchcocks, and also installed replaced the 30 pound cat con torpedo exhaust with one pretty much the same size and shape as that one, except in chrome (I DESPISE flat black) also from Hitchcocks. I run mine without the removeable baffle at the end. I live in AZ, U.S., and use Motul 20w50 oil. It gets HOT here. Having been used to Japanese bikes, this bike is a nightmare to change oil in, but that's what you have to deal with when you have a REAL vintage design bike, and not a modern retro. The sound and feel of this engine is worth it. Switching to a carburetor and aftermarket exhaust completely changes the sound and feel of this bike. It's 10 times better. Sounds and feels just like the old iron barrel Bullet. Besides all the steps required, which just seem to go on and on, I have had two problems not mentioned here. The first one is the two large O-rings that go at each end of the filter. The one you put in first, before the filter, and the other one that goes on the spring loaded filter cover. There are no grooves for these O-rings to fit into, and there is a bit of room for them to move around, so it is impossible to know for sure if they are in the proper place after you have installed the cover. I have used vaseline to help hold them in place. The second issue is getting the oil level right. I want the oil level on ALL motorcycles to be right at the top of the sight glass. That is NOT overfilled. I put in a couple of quarts of oil, and with the bike on the stand, started the engine and let it run for about 15 minutes to get it nice and warm. I then let it set for an hour or so, on the stand, and checked the oil level. I could just barely see oil at the very bottom of the sight glass. I filled it up to the top of the sight glass, ran the engine a few minutes, and assumed the oil level was correct. I left it till the next day. Just before going for a ride, I looked at the sight glass, and to my surprise, the oil level had dropped again, to just above the bottom of the sight glass. Before starting it, I again filled it up to the top of the sight glass. I warmed up the engine for several minutes, and went for about a 50 mile ride. When I got back, I parked it on the centerstand. The next day I checked the oil level, and this time it was still where it was supposed to be. To make sure it wasn't overfilled, I leaned the bike slightly to the left. With the centerstand only about half an inch off the floor on the right side, I could see a gap between the top of the oil level and the top of the sight glass, confirming the oil level was correct. I have no idea what caused the oil level to drop so much overnight. I have a H-D Sportster, which also has a dry sump engine, except it actually has an oil tank. And when you change the oil in it, the level stays put. This same thing has happened on every oil change on the Royal Enfield. I just accept that these bikes require a bit more fiddling than a modern bike, but they are so much more fun to ride that to me it's worth it. Recheck your oil level the day after changing your oil.
Close up video on the spring retaining plate disassembly and o ring replacement would be appreciated. Trying to see details from 3 metres away is impossible to see. Thanks. Great video btw...
that matte black silencer looks amazing, and your way of explanation is very nice englishman...could you please post more of such DIY videos for different models of RE?
Getting the gauze filter out isn't as easy as in the video if you have a rear disc brake model. As the rear master cylinder gets in the way. I found unbolting the master cylinder makes it a lot easier.
Great video, very useful. Thank you. It would have been good to include the torque settings for the sump bolts...also a close up while changing the o ring on the sump filter...but thank you anyway. 👍
Just watched the vid. I have seen several others but only your vid shows removing the spring retainer and replacing an additional O ring when replacing the filter. I have a 2020 C5 and just want to know if I am missing something. Thx - helpful vid.
@@HitchcocksMotorcycles thanks, Info is much appreciated. BTW love your exhaust, the bike idles and sounds beautiful. And the panniers are perfect. Thanks to Stu Fillingham (spelling?) for directing me to your site.
Hi Danny, we have these listed in the video description but have also listed a copy below: Torque settings as taken from the workshop manual: Filter gauze cover 0.6KG-M (6NM) Main drain plug: 2KG-M (20NM) Oil filter cover: 0.6KG-M (6NM)
Just realised I didn’t place an o ring behind the oil filter, will this make a difference, should I be concerned? Great video and put up 2 days after I changed mine, but will watch again for next time.
Hello, if you have missed out an o-ring during assembly, its definitely worth going back to refit one as it may cause unfiltered oil to pass around the oil filter.
Well spotted, the GT is one of our test bikes that has our 4 valve cylinder head conversion fitted. In the future we will be releasing a full video on this setup.
I dont own one of these bikes yet.. The thought of doing an oil change every 5000km was daunting, but after seeing your video, it looks oh so simple.. Is there a manual with these bikes that states the torque settings for the bolts?

Don’t have a Royal Enfield dealer in Jordan so I bought a new classic 500 from Dubai dealer and had it shipped to Jordan. I was told to add oil, connect battery, tighten bolts and nuts, and adjust tire pressure. Do I need to do anything else. Thanks
Hi Amjad, the bikes would usually go through a PDI before making its way to the customer, if this has not been done, perhaps the dealer can supply you with the PDI list for you to go through and check.
Old school master. I am horrified to see how many likes are when somebody is monkying around with the bike and how little number is of those how want to learn how to do basic things. Learning is the hardest school for cabbages!
Thank you for creating such a clear tutorial on the engine oil change. I have no worry now about carrying out the job myself.

Always enjoy your clips and your high quality spare parts for our Classic 500 bikes.
Liked the use of the graphic showing exploded view 👏

Great video, thank you. Thanks for the Tq settings in the comments too.

You could mention that the kit with the o rings is an item, part no90055D. Anyone just ordering a filter gets a bare filter.
I would like to know the torque settings for the relevant bolts in the oil change.

Great. My classic 500. Needs an oil change soon.
You guys sell the whole kit for oil change I guess.
Good vid, very clear and concise giving me plenty of confidence to tackle it myself.
Would it be possible to include the copper washers in the oil filter kit please?
Mine included the washer.
Thank you very much!

if possible, can you make a video on how to install the Airfly engine guard for the EFI model which has the oxygen sensor.
Thank you!
I like this modal
Plz make a video on thunderbird general inspections and maintenance
Thank you, very clear instructions. Would you be able to do a chain adjustment and wheel alignment check on the 2015 B5 please. Much appreciated.
Good video
If you pump the kick starter a few times you'll get more oil out.
Could you possibly do a service o the 500 Electra please
Very nice bike
That is probably the best oil change video I have seen. Are all the washers, seals etc in the kits you supply ? Thank you in advance
The Hitchcocks oil change kit is excellent and includes everything mentioned here except the oil which you can order on their site too.
I've had trouble with the oil strainer cap weeping a little oil. Daren't tighten the bolts up any more. Don't have a torque wrench.
Hello could you put some videos on here for the pre unit bikes as it would be a great reference point
Thank you 🇮🇹
Lovely bikes. Nostalgia but in modern world.

It is not necessary to replace this O-ring on every oil filter change, but we like to do this if carrying out a major service.

Is synthetic motor bike oil ok?
Can you make a video on LIGHTNING 535...😄
Whats is the torque for the forward drain plug
Standard model has electric start, not available in India. Dont know why? (specifically this tank), though ES comes in other plain colored tanks.
Its 500 standard comes with electric start
350 version has kick only
Excellent as always from Hitchcocks, what torque settings please ?
Hi Danny, we have these listed in the video description but have also listed a copy below:
Torque settings as taken from the workshop manual:
Filter gauze cover 0.6KG-M (6NM)
Main drain plug: 2KG-M (20NM)
Oil filter cover: 0.6KG-M (6NM)
I have bought Smith & Allen 4T fully synthetic 15-50 oil is this ok for my royal Enfield classic 350 2022 reborn model. Many thanks Rob
Can i ask if my RE 2016 classic oil change will be the same as the GT bullet classic Oil change? Much appreciated for any advice.
Just realised I didn’t place an o ring behind the oil filter, will this make a difference, should I be concerned? Great video and put up 2 days after I changed mine, but will watch again for next time.

Can u make vidio royel Enfield 500cc crom full service
@@joaogabrielfelizardo7861 confused why you are asking me to make the video?
Please make a video on engine oil like the grade, quality and what are the differences and pretty much everything about engine oils. 😁
Why the head on CT 535 looks different can u please review that as well

Is there a manual with these bikes that states the torque settings for the bolts?
No need for torque values
Just snug up the bolts properly without any jolt
I know this coz I own one from many years
Did you add any more oil after running it for a minute or just 2 liters is good enough?
After running the bike up, you should recheck the oil level and top up if required.
How many litres oils for bullet 500cc
What are the torque settings please?
