11:33 There are actually 52 teams playing in the Spring Nationals (47 prefectural winners + 4 additional representatives from the 4 biggest prefectures + 1 more team from Tokyo as host). So they play in a 64-team bracket. So, to win the tournament, the team needs to win 6 matches.
In this case , 12 teams get a bye in the first round to make it work. Basically, 40 teams play in the first round, with 20 teams advancing and joined by the 12 teams that got a bye, making it 32 teams in the second round. The 12 teams that got a bye are the top 4 teams from Summer Interhigh Tournament plus 8 lucky teams by drawing.

The reason that it was the pinch server’s first official match is that the super high under hand serve only works on a gym with really high ceiling. And only in a big stadium like the Tokyo venue would have high ceiling. In the prefecture prelims, those gyms would have lower ceiling.

Its also a manga only detail but this teams backstory was they lost last year at the same spot but because they couldnt get used to the stadium, which is why they had a member practice a ceiling serve that could only work at Nationals. They knew how the stadium messes with people and wanted to try and capitalize on it.

So something to know about underhand serve. A regular serve that you see most other people do requires throwing the ball in the air and hit it above your shoulder, which takes time to get the accuracy and power right to get it pass the net. Underhand serve is actually the first serve you learn as a beginner. You just drop the ball and hit it as hard as you can to get it up, much easier to master. Karasuno's players were all surprised to see underhand serve stand because it is a beginner serve. You rarely see it in high-level matches.
However, this underhand serve is different, it's what they called a ceiling serve or a sky serve (beach volleyball). You hit it as high as possible, and let the gravity do the job for you. As explained in the episode, it's hard to look at the ball when it's so high up, and it drops fast.
For indoor volleyball, it can only be execute when the arena has a super high ceiling. For beach volleyball, it normally is an open arena, so a sky serve used to be a relatively commonly seen serving technique. When you play in outdoor, the sun gets in the way, and you won't be able to see the ball when it's so high up.

Skyballs arent really as common in indoor. Theyre a lot more common in outdoor because of the sun and the wind make it substantially harder to recieve. I pro volleyball some times theres cameras and jumbotrons right above the court. In the recent USA match two servers got angry bc the camera above them was interfereing with their serves

8:33 this is just a mental thing. i dont really remember, but ukai teach that to asahi so he can manage the stress when he is in serve, i guess since the second cour of this season was kinda made in lockdown situation they cut out the explanation they had.
