We used to put Suffolk Rams on Dorper Ewes for commercial meat production. Dorpers have a slightly superior milk production in the first 6 weeks of lactation . Couple this with the Suffolk's superior growth and finished lambs can be slaughtered at 100 days instead of 180 days. Add to this that we regularly won the Block Test at livestock shows around South Africa with the cross breed carcass. The meat quality of the cross Dorper Suffolk is outrageously good with 100 day carcasses weighing 50 pounds compared to the average 180 day old lamb having a carcass weight of 25 to 30 pounds at 180 days old.
