  • Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s 25-year career as the member for Warringah has been ended by independent candidate Zali Steggall.
    Four Corners brings you the inside story of how the battle for Warringah was lost and won in the 2019 federal election.
    In interviews with key players, Four Corners reveals the strategy behind the Steggall campaign, the roots of the insurgency within the seat of Warringah and the roles played by the key activist groups, GetUp and Advance Australia.
    With Tony Abbott's political career at an end, all eyes will be on the Liberal Party to see if the divisions that roiled the last two governments are over.

    Fact. Abbott was ousted by dissatisfied former Liberals (not left wing activists) who found a genuine local member of their community to do the job.

    In the late 1980s I learned about "The Greenhouse Effect" in high-school. The scientists had warned us then. It takes a special kind of individual to still be arguing the other way in 2019. He was the kid who kicked over everyone else's sand-castles, wrecking the hard work of everyone who tried to take action of climate change. I'm impressed with my electorate for putting party tribalism aside for more important issues. Well done Warringah!

      If you're talking about natural climate change, a tiny amount of research would make you realise the rate of change is too fast to be natural.
      It would be like arguing, when the wings have snapped off a plane, that you're not going to crash, because planes naturally descend when they are coming in to land.

      So are you saying the Big Bang and the transformation of the earths environment has no influence on living organisms evolving?

      @duncanwallace7760 2 года назад

      You're right, life on earth definitely changed the atmosphere and plants are absolutely part of that! But Evolution happens in living organisms.
      The big bang, the universe, stars and planets are not living things, so its not evolution.
      Climate change has happened on other planets like Venus, without any life, so its not caused just by living things.
      Scientists spent a lot of time working out that the rapid increase in carbon dioxide since the industrial revolution could not have been because of natural processes. Its happening way too fast for that. Natural processes stored away huge amounts of CO2 in fossil fuels over millions of years, and we're burning it and releasing the CO2 back into the atmosphere.

    The defeat of veteran right-wing Liberal MP - and former Prime Minister - Tony Abbott was the only 'silver lining' amidst a disappointing outcome for the ALP (Australian Labor Party). Notwithstanding the disappointing outcome, i am quite elated that Abbott finally received his comeuppance when lost his seat to Olympic alpine skier-barrister Zali Steggall. There is absolutely no doubt that the now-former MP for the constituency of Warringah, NSW was perceived to be 'out of touch' in the eyes of both his constituents and the Australian populace. Much remains to be seen is if his 'comrade-at-arms' named Peter Dutton - MP for the constituency of Dickson, QLD - will be inclined to pick up the torch for the right-wing of the Liberal Party, now that Abbott has been forced to relinquish it. Upon winning a by-election for the constituency of Warringah, NSW back in March 1994, Abbott sowed the seeds of his eventual political demise.

    In the case of Tony Abbott, you'd likely hear that in more private, relaxed settings, he's great company. Can tell a joke, take a joke, he basically passes the 'superficial stuff' test.
    But if you ask the electorate the great leveller, "Who would you rather have a beer with?", Tony would score very poorly. For some reason, all the affability and bonhomie he supposedly displays behind closed doors abandons him in public.
    He comes across as an unctuous, disingenuous schemer, a reptile, a conspiracy nut's wet dream.

    This is inaccurate. No Australian under the age of 85 has actually fought for this country. Aussie soldiers who served in Korea, Vietnam, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan have fought for Australia's geopolitical interests, and for the hegemony of our allies.
    We can be grateful to our soldiers however, for their service, because it demonstrates willingness to fight, even die, for their country.
