Independence Exercise That Actually Sounds Good!

- I have no problem spending time working on independence exercises as long as I know they are getting me closer to my long term goal of being musical and for lack of a better phrase, sounding good on the drums. This one little exercise gives you plenty to work on and in the end you'll have a very musical fusion phrase that goes over the barline. You’re Groove freedom book has helped me out tremendously with these kind of rhythms, and my ghost notes. I use ghost notes in almost every song I play, and it makes them sound so much better. I wish that book was still available, but your online lessons have helped me out a lot as well.
This has to be the best independence exercise I've heard. So groovy, so Garibaldi'sh. I'll have fun with this one.
I've been working on independence with my private teacher now since 2019 and I know that feeling you mentioned of working working working and then BAM! It's a great feeling.
there are alot of great educators and players here on RUclips but Mike its always you're lesson I actually bother to sit down, digest and explore because alot of what you teach is soooo applicable. you've inspired me just to focus on the basic because thats what everything's built off, you taught me that like no other educator has

Such an amazing one! I think what I love the most is the structure, you actually repeat the first 3 beats (taking out the first kick), which means backbeat displacement later. So tasty...
And if you want to get into cruel territory, whenever there's 2 consecutive kicks, replace the second one with a ghost note.
Also 4:54: did you mean to play these extra fills? :P
So glad you enjoyed it Nix! Yes, I was playing in 8 bar phrases. 8 bars of the exercise, followed by 8 bars of improvisation. One of the ways that I know "I have it" is when I can freely go in and out of the exercise or whatever it is that I'm working on. Freedom is ALWAYS the goal :) Hope that helps - Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵

I mentioned in the middle of the lesson that if this one is too difficult to start with then I have a bunch of independence courses that will slowly build you up to this. This lesson is for advanced drummers that have worked on their independence constantly for 5-10 years.

Hi Mr. Johnston, really random question: do you think it would work teaching improv with sampling pads? You can put in some small musical phrases and just have students trigger the samples by hitting the pads in time. I feel like it's a good way of understanding how improvisation works and taking away the scariness of it. Awesome lesson as always. I love your delivery and you are a true inspiration :)

Mike, I have to know. How long did you practice this before you were able to hit the goal tempo?
That’s a great question. Unfortunately it doesn’t quite work like that. I was able to hit the goal tempo on my first time trying it, but that’s not the full story. The truth is I practiced the exercises that led up to me being able to play this for years and years. That’s what my independence courses are based on. I hope that helps my friend :-)
This is probably a rookie question but: for this to be an independence exercise do I need to start the right hand an hat and then try to lay the kick and snare over top of them, or can I break the rhythm down piece by piece, see where everything syncs up and then memorize it? I typically learn things the latter way, but I wonder if that's really training my independence if I don't force myself to hold one pattern while I overlay the next one. Do you see what I am asking?
Hi, becoming a big fan! I saw some of your older videos on developing bass drum technique. Do you mostly pivot from your hip flexor muscle, or use the ankle? There's lots of opinion out there..confusing...thank you.
