I wonder how many times I've cued this up, how many times I've forwarded the link to friends. Just beautiful. Plain, then a little embellished, then plain to finish. Just like all of us humans. Praise.
At this troubled time this beautiful tune really resonates with my soul. Thank you Kari, for an amazing fiddle performance, and that's not to take away from Larry and Reggie who were brilliant also. Lets enjoy the music and get through this terrible virus together. Good health to all our cousins in the U.S. from Manchester. U.K.
That is some GREAT music!! I've listened to this video literally a hundred times or more over the last three years since I discovered it and it NEVER gets old.
This is my favorite version of Midnight on the Water....i have listened to ya'll i bet 100 times....I met Larry on the BHO one nite but didnt realize who he was till after he has gone.....anyway ya'll keep up the great work...very soulful playin
John, thank you for your kind remarks. Black and Tan String Band is an informal group of us that get together from diverse places to play periodically (Philly and NYC). We have no CDs, but we are discussing that possibility for the future. Frog Hollow is in northeastern PA and is just a cabin that is available for rent, like a lot of summer cottages in the Pocono mountains. Thanks. Larry
I am fascinated by civil war photos and to hear this song- popular in that time period -played so well gives the images a deeper meaning. Thanks for the good work.
Oh luv luv luv! I have been playing fiddle for less then two years but after hearing this, had to start looking for the sheet music for it. You all sound beautiful!
Lovely version. I was looking for a version to play along with on my C#/D button accordion and your version worked really well. Had a lovely jam session here behind my computer. :) Thanks.
Thanks, Dolf. 11 years and that RUclips still gets nice comments. I am learning fiddle and also enjoy searching for play-along videos. Enjoy your button accordian. Larry
Thank you, Kathy. We gather periodically to jam and sometime point a cam at us. We have no CDs out, we just enjoy playing so much. No, I have not been to a Civil War Ball, but that does sound interesting. I have thought about the civil war re-enactments. Thanks, Larry
Thanks, fiddlebarb. I also have just started fiddle. The process is a slow one for me. Good luck with your fiddle playing. Post some fiddle when you can.....I intend to when I have something worth posting. Larry
Well done,a beautiful tune! I have heard several versions of this tune and this is the best. Where could I find sheet music for this version? Love the setting !
Thanks 44. I just took up the fiddle. It is a new instrument to me and it is slow going. You should post something once you get your fingers nibbled up again. Thank you. Larry
wen u guys snuck up to that high note you stole it.That's what this tune's about. Yet the overall soporific atmospheric effectwas not lost. Hmmm lovely!
Jared Ball Thanks, Jared. I think Kari is in standard tuning on the fiddle, though she was exploring cross-tunings. We are playing in the key of D. The guitar is in standard tuning.
+Pteromandias - I never heard the two being confused. I think they are very different tunes. Sometimes there are structural or melody similarities between tunes that trigger for different people, I think. At jam sessions, you sometimes have someone break into the B part of a different tune because of some similar phrase or chord sequence.

So beautiful! I used to play the fiddle, and music like this inspires me to take it up again, now that my son is older. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks, Ivor.
Exquisite
Was this dead mans tuning? This sounds distinct to many other versions of this tune. Very pretty!
Jared Ball Thanks, Jared. I think Kari is in standard tuning on the fiddle, though she was exploring cross-tunings. We are playing in the key of D. The guitar is in standard tuning.
I often see this titled as Midnight on the Water, and sometime Bonaparte's Retreat. Are they the same tune?
+Pteromandias - I never heard the two being confused. I think they are very different tunes. Sometimes there are structural or melody similarities between tunes that trigger for different people, I think. At jam sessions, you sometimes have someone break into the B part of a different tune because of some similar phrase or chord sequence.
Larry Toto I realize it's because they are played together.
nice!!
GOOD!
