- This time we're taking a look at the show Johnny Test and how it's art-style was caught up between two big art movements in the industry, and how that can affect the new revival arriving on Netflix.
The worst part of the transition to flash was definetly the characters hair, is realy noticeble that the more fluent moviment of the first season is totaly gone by the second
Yes, that secondary animation was the first thing to go. Not that it couldn't be done. It's simply that there was neither time nor the budget to spare for it.

Just to know, the original pilot was, in fact, animated in Macromedia Flash. The first season was outsourced to South Korea's Digital eMation. The second season's animation was done by Collideascope Digital Productions. You can see some hand drawn bits here and there.
So yeah, the show's animation quality has the show first going on from Flash, to South Korea and Toon Boom, then back to Flash animation again.

I remember watching this show back around 2007 at 12 years old and hating it. The fact that I was watching the "good" seasons is disturbing

I completely forgot that the show *didn't* use Flash at first. I am so used to the flash-style and whip sound effects that the show became infamous for.
Actually, it used Flash at first, then it switched to hand-drawn via South Korea's Digital eMation, a combination of hand-drawn animation and Flash animation via Collideascope Digital Productions and back to Flash animation via Atomic Cartoons.
For Seasons 2-3, despite losing the hand-drawn style, the animation was still good when animated in Flash. Starring from Seasons 4-6 when Collideascope lost the animation production on JT it was moved to Vancouver studio: Atomic Cartoons, Inc. (whose also did storyboards for select episodes in the first season) their animation wasn’t really good and much stiffer than the Collideascope and Digital eMation animators, assistant animation was done at Seventoon, Inc. and Philippine Animation Studios, Inc.. In the reboot it is done in ToonBoom instead of Flash. It is unknown who animated JT but it’s probably a Korean or Canadian studio providing it.
No. The animation for the Netflix revival was apparently done by a brazilian animation studio called Copa Studio, who were credited for animation services.

I liked this show at first, but after watching a TON of episodes, it more or less overstayed it's welcome. Not calling it a bad show, but there are far better shows out there.
The last season of Johnny Test was basically, "hey let's get every Johnny Test character together to compete in a game or race or whatever, it got really tiring at that point"
Wow when you put the first season next to the other ones it looks 10x better, like theres literally no way that the newer seasons look better.
In S4, Mary and Susan’s hair clips are outlined black when should be outlines blue. They fixed it in S5.

I only started noticing the whip cracks when people pointed it out to me to be honest.
It's finally out now, and it's somewhere between season 1 and season 6 in quality.
It is around season 1.5 quality
Johnny Test used to be my favorite show in my childhood, but nowadays its illogical to me when looking at it again.
This show is VERY nostalgic for me. 10/10
Fun fact: Cookie Jar also made the later seasons of Caillou, yes, they made the two most hated shows ever.

When they bring the show back(with Toon Boom Harmony I might add), hopefully they’ll do the animation right by making it feel hand drawn.
I've Heard the Animanics use some really good rigging in Harmony. We will see if the new series gets that loving treatment.
I genuinely remember every clip, dang its crazy that they’re buried deep in my mind. I did enjoy it to be honest, though when i rewatched it the crack whips were definitely a lot more annoying than i remember

Then the animation declined around the 2nd season.
Okay here me out Jonny test is one big fever dream aside from far means I haven’t seen an actual episode since elementary school I know I used go watch it a lot bc it was a guilty pleasure show and I was kid who ate it up
But hearing the whip crack didn’t come in until later seasons is both shocking and not surprising at all

On the other hand when I first heard about the whole whip crack in Johnny test phenomenon I was like “wait I don’t remember there being an annoying whip crack ALL the time?” And I assumed ah I just blocked it out but no I guess it’s explained by how it wasn’t in all the seasons.
Further more Johnny test was decent at one thing which was the super hero plot line so it’s got that. Idk this show as a whole gets so much hate and it’s bad but also I feel like worse crap exists now so this show is just middle of the road, and more ahah stupid funny than annoying.

Despite the over-reliance on milking old brands that has become unignorable in the past decade or so,
I feel that Johnny Test is a show that actually warrants a reboot.
In my opinion, reboots should be reserved for properties that were not able to reach their full potential during their original run.
Johhny Test certainly fits the bill.
I found the reboot to be utterly delightful, it felt like a natural extension of season one but with a BUMP to the budget and displayed an intimate understanding of what made the early show so charming.
I feel like even the writers knew that the whip crack was overused in episode 5 of the new reboot

Flash animation cartoons can be decent looking, and at times contribute to the style when it's done a certain way. Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Ruby and Max, Pucca, and probably the most relutable heckin' Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends! My favorite animated show, Dan Vs is an example of flash animation, and it's never distracting or makes watching difficult.
And then something like Johnny Test rolls along, and suddenly it's cheap and looks bad. To the point where if a cartoon that uses flash looks alright it's impressive. 🙄

The traditional look is far superior to the flash look. It's to the point that just looking at a still of the traditional look is so appealing while every still from the flash era looks gross.

I was confused as to why it looks so much worse then what I remembered as a kid. Turns out I stopped watching it before they switched to flash animation.
Since Season 2, everybody started freaking out and making whip styles and screaming often since.
Sorry I couldn't actually see the animation difference die to the whip cracking.

Yes, shows that start in flash tend to go better because then the original team knows what they're doing. After being handed off three times the downfall was inevitable.
