  • Even the Grinchy, fare-hiking MTA is getting into the spirit of the season by running vintage cars along the V line on Sundays this month. New Yorks Christopher Bonanos took us on a ride-along last weekend. Watch the video to get a glimpse of open windows, wicker seats, and Dr. Zizmors predecessors. Then take a ride yourself this Sunday or next. Video by jonah green.

I rode the NYC subway in 1979 when the original IRT line in lower Manhattan celebrated its 75th anniversary. The cars dated from 1904 or close to it. I wonder if Boston or Philadelphia celebrate their subways?

It's weird. They add a bunch of superfluous features and garish colors to the modern trains but the basic operation and features are still the same from 100 years ago.

I used to ride those cars daily while in high school. They used to run on the CC and the E and F trains. They seemed to run at a very high speed but maybe because they were so loud they just seemed fast. Summer heat was never an issue because the end doors would be propped open the windows would be open and the ceiling fans would be spinning so there was always a breeze.

Thanks you very much for making this video. Taking time out of your day to show the rest of the world about NYC. I'm in Hawaii, and would never have known such things were going on.

I used to ride one of these trains to high school in the early 70s to West 4th Street. Back then it was called the CC train on the IND line. I remember the fans blowing my hair around and sitting on broken straw seats that poked you through your clothes. In the winter the heat under the seats would almost burn the back of your legs. Wasn't a big fan of these trains.
