I think it's not necessary to remove the air conditioner belt if you are not going to drive without the alternator. This means that there is no need to jack the car. On gasoline engine without intercooler, it's also not necessary to remove the hose, making work a bit quicker :)
Please help me. 05 passat tdi wagon, I replaced the alternator and the serpentine belt and for the life of me I can't get the AC belt back on. The pulley is as loose as could be but I can not get the darn belt back on. Am I missing something?
This video is all fine well and good, but it does not address if the engine is a 1.8, like this one, where the alternator is at the top of the engine, whereas a 2.8 is at the bottom of the engine. If a 2.8 you have to remove the bumper cover, crash cushions and so forth to get the alternator out. Basically take the front end of the car off to change the alternator. You need to get your act in gear here.

Never under any circumstances jack a VW from the center of the subframe. It will crack and bend.
