Ruth....thank you so much! I was shopping Lamy nibs this evening for both myself and my youngest son who is also into fountain pens now. Your video has been extremely helpful! On a side note, I hope you give NO credence whatsoever to Atif Rana's comments below. He/she must be a very lonely, miserable person. You are beautiful! My wife and sons agree. Thank you again for such a helpful video! Keep them coming. :-)
+Mark Bradley so sorry for not replying sooner. Thank you so much for your kind words. I find the best way to deal with people like that is to not give them the attention they are so desperately craving.
what a helpful video - I was resigned to thinking only medium nibs were available freely, so was glad to find a seller on a certain auction site offering the pen with a fine nib, and so I ordered one; then after watching the video again, decided to get one with an Extra fine nib too. They didn't have the lovely blue/green pen sadly. I love how your nails match said pen!
This is a great video even four years later. I hadn't even started with FPs when this video was posted, but you and this video answered my questions. Thanks.
Nicely done and a worthy follow-up to your first review. I like the way Diamine inks shade and that came out nicely as the nibs increased in size. Cheers.
I think the F one is too wet that it makes darker shade and that makes it looks like biffier than M one. Wait. It's two years old comment. I better go get sleep.
Thank you very much for your work. I just got my first stub nib which is on a Pilot Prera which you have also been so kind to review. I appreciate your videos. Thank you.
Ms. Hansen - Thanks so much for this. I was going round in circles trying to decide which italic nib to order to spice up an Al-Star and you helped me quite a bit! Thanks also for describing the feel of the nib as you are using it, All very useful. I am now subscribed. So sorry some have chosen unkind words to leave as comments but it is far more a reflection of them than anything they choose to comment on. In your defence, I thought you were pretty. Again, thanks for showing us these nibs.
Thank you for the very helpful vid. I found the Lamy Joy set at half price plus 10% off yesterday and couldn't resist buying it, so this vid is really helpful. Love your colourful collection of Safaris.
I watched this video before I got my first fountain pen :) I decided to buy a blue lamy safari with a F nib. The video helped me a lot to choose Fine over medium. Thank you again for recording this :)
Nice review, thank you. With those italic nibs, does one have to write more slowly to avoid cross lines scratching into the paper? I've used calligraphy pens and I've found that they work better at printing or calligraphic lettering than for regular cursive handwriting. I'm wondering, too, if these italics dig into the paper much, as I've had that happen with other calligraphic pens. Thank you, and what a lovely collection you have.
I have been using the Lamy Fine nib for the past two years. Using Lamy bottled ink I like how it puts down a wet line but doesn't feather on any quality paper i.e. printer paper or generic note pad paper. Considering getting a 1.1 nib for a little extra subtle style...thank you!
Thanks for this video: It convinced me to buy a medium nib for my Lamy Safari (which came with a fine nib, which is a bit scratchy for me). From Louisiana. . . .
This was so helpful, Im looking into getting a Lamy but wasnt sure on the nib size. I think I NEED the medium and the fine lol! Plus Ive fallen in love with that blue greeny colour its so gorgeous. But I dont think you can get this anymore. Great video super helpful thank you!
Hi Ruth, what beautiful collection that you have. I have a silver al-star with medium nib and it works perfectly. I've just ordered an ocean blue al-star with an EF nib notwithstanding I've stumbled across some reviews saying it's quite scratchy. Can you please share some experience writing with that nib? Many thanks.
I am curious about the ink you used. The lines produced for the fine nib seems so much thinner than my LAmy Safari fine nib on stock LAmy blue cartridge
My white lamy Safari with the Fine Nib just arrived today and I love it. I thought it was fake because it came with a converter but I found out it was real after watching a video. Now I have 2 pens. White TWSBI eco & a white lamy Safari
Very comprehensive. Thank you! This would be a good video for beginners, I think, since many go for a Lamy as their fist pen. I will link beginners that I come across here!
I cant decide between ef and 1.1. i like the fat likes, they look cooler, but idk if they will be good for taking notes everyday on school paper. I ground my pilot varsities to a stub to see if i can take notes with a stub all day. I would like to hear your Guy's opinion
Thx, you saved my time, it was very helpful. I think i will buy Lamy with M nib but now i'm in dilemma about inks... Pelikan 4001 or Parker quink, i dont demand nothing special from these inks just for casual writing. So which one you recommend? Great video btw, take care
Wow that was fast!! I've checked Goulet Pens! For most part they are the same, minuscule as you've said!! I guess the differences can be said better in person, than in videos or pictures. Cheers! :")
And I was feeling bad because I own three Lamy fountain pens! haha... Well, this video is exactly what I was looking for. I have used a medium nib since I bought my first pen many years ago. This year I bought new pens, but I decided to switch to fine nibs and I really liked them. Now I have three FPs and they all have fine nibs. I think I will just change the nibs in two of them. I liked EF and I think I'll go for the 1.9. It looks beautiful!
Hi, I'm trying to find a nib that is unique to my writing style. When I use a mechanical (lead) pencil, I like when the lead is on an angle. Do you know any nib names/size/type that are like this? Thank you!
One pet peeve about Lamy nibs is that their sizes aren't consistent. I have a Medium that writes like a Fine, and a Fine that writes like a Medium. Some are smooth, others not so much.
Appreciate the very useful nib comparison. Like you, I prefer (or my handwriting calls for) EF or F. I even went so far as a UEF on my Platinum 3776 but it's got more feedback than I care for. At any rate, you've inspired me to experiment so I have a 1.1 for my Al Star on the way!
Hey, nice video. (The color of the fountain pen with ef nib had a color very similar to your nail polish hehe) Recently my Lamy 2000 had an accident and I had to change the nib. I was lucky that the dealer had what I believe was old stock of new nibs because he sold me the nib for 25$. He told me the nib was labeled as MK and I wanted to ask you what does it mean. I didn't see this nib in your video. Thank you :)
+Héctor Corea I now have an MK, you can see this nib in my Lamy Accent video, it is an old nib which is why I didn't have it before. It has a medium line but a rounder ball on the nib.

I didn't word my query the best, and I will be getting flex nibs and working with my dip pen I've yet to use (haven't ordered ink..on that note - I'm going for Noodler's...would you say that will be a good choice both for the Safari (using the piece that allows you to draw from an inkpot) AND use for my dip pen and glass pen (got both as part of one of those gift sets with the two pens and glass inkpot on a wood base, sure you've seen those...nice gift, I love it) ...SO- I'm so wordy here... is the difference between FINE and MEDIUM LAMY NIBS much at all? To summarize, I ask because if not, I'll go with nib sizes that are at least "one rather noticeable bit apart". Sorry again for the poor articulation. Thanks again for the video and the channel. PS- if the Noodler's isn't a good ink for both the LAMY and dip pen, can you suggest an ink that is? I do understand I have to buy the accesory to use for the LAMY to be able to draw from an inkpot. The Pen & Inkwell Thanks. I bought an Al-Star in fine and in my opinion it's terrible (for me). The Pilot Metropolitan in Medium was, totally smooth and amazing and much easier to write with.
Sorry for the very late reply to your comment. The nibs do write smoother the broader they get, however I find that the fine nib is very smooth anyway.

Atif Rana Atif, you need to delete your earlier inappropriate comments, and issue an apology to the original poster. Then we can discuss your hand-writing experiences, too.
Good to see a female doing these types of reviews. Usually it's quite male dominated, good stuff! As a student I much prefer fine nibs. Big broad ones make nice "toys"... But their limited practicality wears thin after playing with them a bit, and once the novelty fades it's useless to me. 0.5mm or smaller is ideal since I do a lot of maths and note taking in my engineering programme.
This was remarkably helpful. I like a thicker script as opposed to the fine. Thanks.
+Librarygurl I'm glad it helped
wow, thank you so so so much for these comparisons!!! it was tremendously helpful to see all of the sizes side by side!
acer.b I'm glad it helped

Thank you, there are quite a few retailers that will swap out the nibs for different sizes....makes it so much more interesting
This is a great video even four years later. I hadn't even started with FPs when this video was posted, but you and this video answered my questions. Thanks.
CJ Walton thank you I'm glad it's still helpful
one of the best videos - thanks for taking all the effort
Nicely done and a worthy follow-up to your first review. I like the way Diamine inks shade and that came out nicely as the nibs increased in size. Cheers.
Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate the feedback.
Exactly what I was looking for ! Thanks !! Love from France.
Maybe it's just me, but he medium looks narrower than the fine.
Great video:)
When I read your comment I thought you were blind/crazy until I compared the two in the video. You're right!
+RelaxingASMR I've hear people complaining about the difference between the medium and fine Lamy. My medium is only slightly larger than the fine.
I think the F one is too wet that it makes darker shade and that makes it looks like biffier than M one. Wait. It's two years old comment. I better go get sleep.
@@dongleseon8785 I just liked your comment and noticed yours is 2 years old too. Should we keep this tradition going?
@@danielsevell5732 aight imma break it
Outstanding video that's a credit to youtube. Thanks.
thank you that's a lovely comment.
This was very helpful, thank you. I ordered 1.5 and 1.9 nibs, I can’t wait to get them.
Brilliant comparison, will opt for the fine & 1.1. Have the 1.5 atm but find it very thick for general writing.
Thank you very much for your work. I just got my first stub nib which is on a Pilot Prera which you have also been so kind to review. I appreciate your videos. Thank you.
the prera is a great little pen. I'm glad my videos are useful
I have one Lamy, the LX medium nib. I was very surprised at how fine a line it puts out, I wasn’t expecting it to be so similar to the fine.
Thank you for putting up this video! I was in doubt in which nib to get, and now I decided... EF, here we go!
Ms. Hansen - Thanks so much for this. I was going round in circles trying to decide which italic nib to order to spice up an Al-Star and you helped me quite a bit!

+thmsjordan thankyou
Was a bit impulsive with my first purchase but I am definitely glad that I went with a Lamy Safari (F Nib)! Thank you so much for the great video!!
Very well done video which clearly brings out the difference between the various nibs. Thanks!
Thank you! This is so helpful! I have a 1.9 in the mail and looking forward to trying it!
Fantastic video!!! Was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much and keep up the great work 😊

Pretty cool collection. I think I'm gonna go with the 1.1!
Hello Ruth: Thank You for a Very Professional Video. Enjoyed very Much to see the differences nib. Agree, the 1.9 look and sound Fantastic.

Ruth Hanson Thank you. Since my first posting, I've purchased a Lamy Al-Star with a 1.5 nib and I like it very much.
I bought a Lamy Safari with a B nib, but now I want to change it for a 1.1 nib, it’s the perfect nib for me!
Thank you for this video. I am just getting into FPs and this was very helpful to understand different nibs.

+Gadget Girls Reviews They have just re launched the bluegreen. I also have mine for sale second hand.
Great video! Much better than the videos at the official lamy website. :)
there are also some unique nibs on the Lamy 2000. Obliques for medium and broad, a double broad and the best medium I have used.
Hi Ruth, what beautiful collection that you have. I have a silver al-star with medium nib and it works perfectly. Thanks. I've ordered a Fine to swap out the Medium I have in my Nexx. Wonder if I'll notice much of a difference? Or if I'll need to get a Extra Fine?
I am curious about the ink you used. The lines produced for the fine nib seems so much thinner than my LAmy Safari fine nib on stock LAmy blue cartridge
hello nice video , i bought new lammy safari pen but not writing like this im using "b" whats problem
there does not seem to be a distinct difference between the fine and medium nib.
there doesn't seem to be a difference between these pens and a regular gel pen.
I think a lot of the difference is in the actual feel of using the pen, vs the end result.
Andy Valdez everything about using a fountain pen is different than usomg a normal pen.

I couldn't find a difference in the F & M nibs! They are identical on your page!!!
I have a fine and a medium nibbed Lamy. They really look the same when it comes to the line it makes.

Wow that was fast!! I've checked Goulet Pens! For most part they are the same, minuscule as you've said!! I guess the differences can be said better in person, than in videos or pictures. Cheers! :")
Does it get wetter as the nib gets broader? Very helpful video thanks!
I have a Lamy fountain pen with f nib but I have no idea why the line looks like m nib. T T
Any thoughts?
Excellent Video! Please do One with the 'oblique' nib.
Hi Susan, thanks for your comments. I think I have an oblique lamy nib here so will look to do one shortly.
Very useful video, where can one find the pen case like the one you have there?
+Luc Makayabu Thankyou ... it was made by a Geoff Morris at pencase.co.uk
Why is the broad nib skipping?

+Sam K you would need to look for an oblique nib.
I just purchased my first fountain pen ✒️ a white LAMY Safari in Fine nib! I want to get the TESBI ECO in White or Black Next!
Why does the fine look broader than the medium?
One pet peeve about Lamy nibs is that their sizes aren't consistent. I have a Medium that writes like a Fine, and a Fine that writes like a Medium. Some are smooth, others not so much.
I agree with you. there are inconsistencies
Nice video. Are medium and broad smooth to write with?
should I go for a 1.1 Italic for my first ever fountain pen (Lamy Safari)

Hello! I recently bought a Lamy Safari F, I wanted to ask if the nib Lamy Z50 EF is compatible with my new pen? :)
+Fabrizio Catalini So sorry I'm only just replying, I missed the notification. yes it would be suitable. Did you get the ef?
this review couldn't be better!
Great Video. Thank you. Keep up the great work. Nick.
+Nicholas Aarons (Nick Mini) Thankyou
Shame about the videos no longer being done
Very nice comparison. Thanks a lot. It was very helpful
Thank you for your comment.
Hey, nice video. (The color of the fountain pen with ef nib had a color very similar to your nail polish hehe)
Recently my Lamy 2000 had an accident and I had to change the nib.
Your video was helpful! Is the extra-fine nib a little bit itchy, isn't it? Which is your opinion? Extra-fine or Fine?
I day not find the extra fines scratchy at all. You can be unlucky sometimes with the nibs though
Thank you
Which size is the most similar to a regular (M) Bic ballpoint pen?
I would suggest either a fine or medium, a medium may be slightly wider
Thank you very much! :)
so 1.1 is finer than broad?
Very usefull comparative video. Thanks a lot!!! Regards!
That line variation is insane...
Does the Lamy Safari pen's nib flex?
It certainly isn't a nail but I wouldn't advise using it as a flex.
Thanks for the video (new to channel, first vid I've seen, but I subbed) I'm buying a Lamy Safari and trying to decide between fine and medium, I do love writing what people see and say "that looks like the Declaration of Independence" (not to say my hand is that good, they're just...I'm sure you get that when people see copperplate, etc.) ...I say that because my love for writing in my improving copperplate is something I definitely WANT to be the first factor in NIB SIZE - BUT...I'd like to have the nib size still be usable for writing small print notes in notebooks, etc. I should just order a medium, probably, and get a fine nib (what are they, like $15 on amazon...Lamy nibs?) ..but if the difference between fine and medium is SLIGHT...then I should get a medium and perhaps extra fine. So does this mean Lamy uses all the same nibs regardless of price point? Or at least sub $100?
The Pen & Inkwell Thanks. I bought an Al-Star in fine and in my opinion it's terrible (for me). The Pilot Metropolitan in Medium was, totally smooth and amazing and much easier to write with.
Thank you! This was really helpful! :D
Es muy ilustrativo el video, Gracias por la información que nos da
Excellent Video help me pick my next safari!
Thanks for this.
Which one is your favourite?
Boss Big the EF is my favourite
Thanks very much for a great video.x
Very well demonstrated
Which nib do you find has the most shading?
In my opinion I find the 1.1 has the best shading.
Thank you for the excellent video. Can you tell me if the fine nib writes as smoothly as the medium nib?
Sorry for the very late reply to your comment. The nibs do write smoother the broader they get, however I find that the fine nib is very smooth anyway.
Pls help me, what is this paper with holes
this is a Rhodia Dot Pad, great paper.
Great Video!
Thanks for posting this...
I was in doubt between the EF and the F.
Seems like I'm more of an F and 1.1 "Nibber" .
Like the bit of extra body the ink gets comparing to the EF.
I'd love to try an oblique.... (maybe onde day when my Calligraphic skills improve) =D

I agree that the fines and extra fines are better for everyday notes. The Japanese fines are even better for maths.
why the flow of ink is not consistent ?
Insight Curiosity. it may be because the surface space for the ink to flow from is different between the nib sizes.
Thanks for your response i would like to use small letters for "Gothic calligraphy and which size should i choose?
I would look at either the 1.5 or 1.9
