I just woke up from an amazing dream about this part of the song. In it, I was watching the sun rise, and this song was playing. What made it better than just any other sunrise was it was just part of some hazy, alien dreamscape with this song just echoing from nowhere. It was the most amazing thing I've never actually seen.
Wow, this tune gives me chills like nothing else, almost as if i feel something pushing me in the back, and then, my whole body feels covered in chills and it almost feels like some kind of drug, feels amazing
I feel so nostalgic listening to this part of the song, as if it were an important part of my childhood and yet I have never heard it until now. Burial is a genius.
i nearly cired... burial thank you for everything... make the best out of everything .. as bad as the situation may be.. enjoy life and listen to Burial..
I realize that the lyrics are likely borrowed from Ernie Halter's "Whisper" and are probably supposed to be: "God can you please whisper in her ear, I wasn't sure we could be friends" But I heard "Shell of Light" first and I (as I'm sure many others did) heard the lyrics as: "God can you please hurry and find me, I wasn't sure we could be friends" Somehow that just seems more meaningful to me. I imagine a broken and isolated soul crying out in her time of need.
I also found this first which led me onto that Whisper tune. and personally, to me i heard it as "God can you please hurry and return to me, i wasn't sure we could be there yet". and for me it seems a whole lot more meaningful. but honestly, i think burial just wanted some nice ambient vocals to go over it and make their own assumptions. if he wanted people to follow the lyrics exactly he would have made it a lot clearer. I know Burial just likes to let people's minds go wild when listening to his music.
Your comment almost made me cry. Burial is all about subversion and renewing old material to create a totally unique message. The fact that people literally interpreted the lyrics differently too has hit me like a wall of emotion. Beautiful
I've heard it as "God can you whisper, I'm hurting, I wasn't sure if we could be friends". Don't hear one ounce of nostalgia, just soul crushing loneliness
This on a rainy day in an old house.... perfection I think my favorite aspect of Burial is that he can convey such huge amounts of emotion in short times, how he can distill the artistic meaning of an entire album or track into one section. Think of the section around 6:00 in truant, it sounds like a bunch of tracks and emotions mixed. Such perfection. Thank you burial, thank you sisterray060
i always somehow stumble upon a track that perfectly fits what i’m going through in life & this is no different. music seems to be the only thing to truly understand me.
-About sampled voice: I believe it's an acapella of a live performance or a cover of this song: Ernie Halter - Whisper If it's a live performance this track was pitched up, the singer it's a man and the voice sounds like a woman... I believe more in the second option, a girl covering this song, some times I download free acapellas or covers of anonymous people on soundcloud. Sometimes i found amazing amateur voices. ¿What you think?
LASTDAYZ you are definitely correct. the most obvious thing that proves you right is that the melody is different from the original version (and from most covers, too). especially on "i wasn't sure if we could be friends." also the way "i wasn't sure" is chopped here makes it sound as if the first thing the singer is singing is the "i" whereas the line in the original song starts "i told her that..."-- i'm overanalyzing here but i spent one night a long time ago trying to find the cover/live version he sampled from and i'm having a conspiracy theory that burial actually may have had someone do an original recording of the melody (notice that you don't hear any other instruments--like a guitar). in an interview he did say he sometimes had friends sing things over the phone for this album, so this could be one of those times. it does sound sampled, though, so maybe not.
LASTDAYZ close resident advisor found the sample. its thicker african american femem teenager who did the cover. they disclose her name tho sadly. sounds beatiful
could you provide a YT link with that cover mate, or any kind of sample reference (or at least the very sample uploaded) so I could dig the matter deeper?
