  • The opening number of MAME puts me in the best mood and Angela Lansbury sounds amazing. Plus a delicious vocal arrangement by Don Pippin. MORE videos on www.SethRudetsky.com

    Seth: Loved your comments on "It's Today". All the singers developed at least 2 more high notes in their voices Most went on to great careers---no lost of voices, Mame vocal arrangements were written for 8 singers who were hired before I wrote. David Gale hit the high D on the trumpet. Hilda Harris, a mezzo could hit high C's How about Phil Lang's scoring? Thanks again for your comments.
    Don Pippin

    Seth- you make me laugh.
    I fell in love with MAME in grade school- it's responsible for my life long obsession with musicals. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to it over the years.
    Angela Lansbury sounds so creamy and displays such an amazing musicality. I love the way she bounces those notes on phrases like "Strike the band up" and "Pull the stops out"
    Philip Lang's scoring is brilliant- he's my favorite orchestrator and the MAME overture is the BEST in all musical theatre.

    I am going to use "BA-GANK!" all of the time now when referring to a brass section.

    Dear Mr. Rudetsky,
    I have to offer you my sincerely gratitude for your RUclips channel. What a treasure. I am a born and raised New Yorker - now a missionary so isolated that its 35 miles to the nearest paved road. Not a lot of Broadway fans around these parts. I just discovered you and for the past 10 days I've been obsessed to watch as many of your videos as I can fit in during the day. I listen to music differently now. I dance to music, now. I dance with you!
    Thank you so much.
    Paul

    This is wonderful. Angela Lansbury is an incredibly talented lady, and Jerry Herman is a fantastic songwriter. This is the golden age of Broadway musicals, and Mame is a classic.

    One of my favorite opening numbers in the history of musical theatre. I had the JOY to do this show a few years back... and let me say, I usually feel a bit cheesy doing a shouted "Hey!" at the end of the song, but with this - like you say, the song is so filled with joy, that it just felt natural. It really is a phenomenal opening number, and this is a WONDERFUL deconstruction!

    My absolute favorite part of "It's Today!" (other than Angela Lansbury being Angela) is that tenor in the chorus. I don't know if anyone will know what I'm talking about but there's one tenor in the chorus that just sticks out to me. He sticks out especially when the chorus sings pianissimo. I don't know why I love that so much. Thank you for doing this deconstruction, I ADORE this song! Mame is so underrated.

    Also, did not know that about Mr. Herman's mama. How great! Love it

    These "deconstructs" are great! I feel as if I'm hearing these shows for the first time. I particularly like what you said about the brass...I always liked the sound but you really brought it into focus. Now, I'd like to hear you deconstruct one of my favorite shows (that I've never seen...) "House of Flowers" and, since I'm wishing, "The Grass Harp" and "The Golden Apple".

    As someone who has just written an opening to musical, your interpretation is most instructive! I don't orchestrate. But I surely understand and am most appreciative of how music gets structured now.
    Thanks Seth! Keep up the utterly fantastic work!
    So I shall give you a "HEY!" :)

  • @castth
    @castth 12 лет назад

    The "HEY" is missing at the end because in context of the show it is used as a transition into scene change music. I guess they thought for the cast recording it should have a clear ending, so they tagged the ending on from the song proper.

    Wonderful stuff, Seth. Now....how 'bout a deconstruction for Lucy's version? :)

    • @johnpickford4222
      @johnpickford4222 4 года назад +1

      It’s not required because Lucille Ball already deconstructed it by trying to croak-I mean trying to sing-it. She didn’t deconstruct it, she destroyed it. It was so slow, to give her time to sing, that it was like a dirge. No “hey” is necessary as “the party’s over, time to call it a day.”

    did Don Pippin vocally arrange Mack and Mabel too? Because on the original cast album the ensemble harmonies are all the same way; reaching for the stars at the top of their range haha

    "Mame" will probably never get a major Broadway production again. They'd have to lose the title song, which is great but a bit too Confederate-friendly for the woke crowd.

    • @charliechilders6630
      @charliechilders6630 Год назад

      Sadly, you are probably right! This is because there are no Angela lansburys, Judy Garland's, Ethel merman's, etc left that can give the excitement, the energy, the thrill, magic etc that can hypnotise and do this role the Justice it's so deserves. Yes there are some truly excellent broadway stars like Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley etc but they are not angela Lansbury or Judy Garland. The only great broadway star who today would probably be the great underrated, mega-talented singer/actress Bernadette Peters! She is still young enough , and her great unique lovable talent could/, would give the "mame" character a new , fresh wonderful and exciting performance! This girl is truly amazing and is magical on live stage just like Judy Garland was, 🤔♥️🥰💌
