Power and speed like no other in history of MLB.
I remember opening a pack of baseball cards as a kid that contained a Mickey Mantle card, and being shocked he was a real person. Up until then I thought he was a mythical legend, like Hercules or Paul Bunyan.

Loved him then, still do. My all-time fave player. Coulda shoulda broke and held all or most of the records that counted. Miss him more than words can say!!!
That kind of speed would have added 25 points to Williams' BA every year, easy. Of course, that's what made Mickey so special. There's never been a 500+ HR guy with his speed.
@@ramchallapalli8154 Mays was a great power/speed combo. But Mantle was faster. He was generally considered the fastest guy in the game in his time and would routinely beat out bunts for hits. Very few power hitters can bunt at all and also have the speed to beat them out.

Mickey hit with more power. I think there is ample evidence to support that with all the tape measures blasts. Mickey was also regarded the fastest when he came, but that was far more subjective in my opinion. He was blonde and attractive in the Leave it to Beaver 50s. He had a Paul Bunyan mystique about him. He played for baseball’s best team so he got the most press. The objective evidence is far more split. Even his 3.1 seconds to first is highly debated and not directly comparable since Willie was right handed. Mickey hit in fewer double plays but he batted 2/3 of the time from left. Willie hit more doubles and far more triples. Willie stole more bases. Yes, Mickey’s success rate on steals was slightly higher, but that was because he was far more selective when he tried. Willie won 12 gold gloves to one at the same position and had far more put outs. I would argue that’s another indirect assessment of speed. Just my .02. I’ve been a life long Willie Mays fan though I’m only 57. My dad took me so see him play when he came to the Mets. He actually homered! I know Mickey has even more lifelong fans. Must have been incredible to watch them at the peak of their powers. Cheers!

Mays was phenomenal but Mickey had more power and speed in their primes in my opinion. Mays had more of pretty much all counting stats because he had a much longer career. Doesn't necessarily make him a better player. I've read several books on Mantle, including 2 that he wrote himself. I've seen the 3.1 mentioned many times by many sources. Whatever the exact time was, Mantle was almost certainly the fastest in MLB for a time, especially before the knee injury. I agree that Mays was better defensively and that Mantles intangibles had a lot to do with his popularity. We'll never know how good he could have been without the injuries. Cheers!

I don't know if it is or isn't, but many articles have since been written saying that it would be scientifically impossible for that to happen. I grew up a tremendous Mickey Mantle fan so I'm not trying to take him down, just mentioning how urban legends get started.

When Ted Williams was asked about Mantle's speed he said if I could run that fast I would have hit 400 every year.
