Random coincidence : I ordered bunch of ceramics tools and paint and stuff to get back into now, as an adult. I did ceramics 1 and 2 in high school and was OBSESSED. I randomly thought today I could use this big candle by my bed for shaping or holding tools. I come across this video ITS THE SAME EXACT CANDLE by my bed and Had idea for. Something about it it feels like it’s the universe is giving me the push or inspiration.

Hello I noticed some things you mentioned in your videos! I don't know if you have any issues with clay cracking, but if you have any regular occurrences with that issue, I suggest taking them out of the sun! You usually don't want your clay to sit to dry in the sun, it will become more fragile and likely to crack. Same thing with using a hair dryer. This is because it dries the clay unevenly, and clay shrinks, so it pulls on part of the clay, but not the other, thus cracking it. :) Leave it under a damp, but not soaked paper towel, and let it dry naturally that way for 3-7 days. If it needs to dry slower, cover it with plastic to help seal the moisture. It will take significantly longer to dry, but be less likely to crack. I've had that issue for ages and just recently realized why. I hope this helps somebody out there! 😁

I think your narration is adorable. I love it when the artist is open and honest-- it's much better than being scripted! I love your design, too. And here's the thing about painting... you can always paint over any mistakes. ;) Once I realized that, I totally relaxed.

I absolutely love it! Recently i got into modeling with clay and my first attempt to make an ashtray did well but when I actually tried to use it, the heat from my cigarette made a black spot on the clay. I will appreciate it so much if you could give me advice what vanish to use, because obviously the one i picked up didn’t work out the best 🙏
thank you! so glad to hear you’ve been experimenting with clay :) i’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to a truly functional ashtray. i realized after i made this video that the type of clay & the varnish i use do not make them useful for putting out a cigarette due to safety (fire hazard) and aesthetic reasons (the black spot you’re referring to!). since then i’ve labeled my trays as decorative pieces only. the varnish i do use however is called “polyurethane” and it is heat resistant but still doesn’t protect our trays like we’d want it to. i’ve been wanting to try out epoxy resin but i’m not sure if that’d be any different than polyurethane. i also believe that real ceramic clay dried in a kiln and painted with glaze is safe to use and burn therefore being the best option for a functional tray. i only assume this since i’ve seen smoking pipes used with ceramic clay material. i haven’t done any research but definitely plan to. if you figure anything else out let me know!! :)

I really wanted to make an ashtray at home but after doing research, I’ve seen that you should NOT use air dry clay but use ones that are safe for kilns as that’s the only clay that’s safe for fire (like incense holders, ash trays, etc). I guess I mainly wanted to ask: Can you use acrylic paint and put it in the kiln? (And if not, which paint types?) Thank you sm ! 🥰
hello! yes i’ve heard this as well. i use a polyurethane varnish which is fire resistant. regardless, i personally don’t see it as a huge deal since i think only a more intense fire would cause a true safety concern. my main goal is to make them decorative & mostly functional lol. i don’t know much about clay you have to put in a kiln, so i can’t really answer that question but i believe it is safe to use acrylic paint first. i would research that tho!! 💜💜💜

I looked into using polyurethane as a fire retardant clear coat and what I read says once it’s dry it’s not toxic, but if set on fire it will be. Sharing in case you weren’t aware but also curious if you’ve found an alternative since making this video?

it depends on the type of varnish used and if it’s fire/heat resistant. some varnishes can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. if you find out any information on what’s best, let me know!

i am using apple barrel acrylic paint! this tray is potentially dangerous with burning items since my sealer (polyurethane) is only heat resistant, not fire resistant. paint alone, with no sealer, would probably burn as well. i suggest using actual ceramic clay in a kiln for a truly functional ashtray, although i’d have to do more research. maybe there’s a sealer that can be used that is fire resistant & safe for smoking 😁

Hey girl! Me again lol. I just decided to come back an tell you what I found out. I was watching an epoxy resin ashtray video, and the girl says that hers hasn't burn when using it. She even put a torch on it and the only thing that happened is that the ashtray got a black mark but it was easy to clean with a wipe.

i used mod podge gloss water based sealer. i don’t use it anymore but i know it can withstand high tempatures. i use polyurethane now, a higher quality sealer that is heat resistant
girl im so scared i made a pickle rick and normal rick ash tray with model magic and didn’t read the label that said don’t use with hot items, i hope the mod podge saves it😭

I’ve been wanting to start making some ashtrays for my shop and I was just wondering how you package and ship them out so there’s no damages? I’m only used to shipping little clay earrings so I’m not too familiar with larger pieces
I purchased 6x6x2 inch foldable boxes from ULINE! They fit the size of my trays and other similarly sized clay pieces very well. I wrap them with bubble wrap to keep them safe and tissue paper to fill in any space in the box so they don’t move around during transit
the lowest tempature possible, mine is 200F. the time needed varies but i check on them every 30 mins. i’ve kept some in for hours and some just 30 mins, it really depends on the thickness. if you’ve never used your oven to dry clay before check on it every few minutes or so to make sure it’s not cracking because some ovens just built different. just be cautious since some clays aren’t always safe in the oven!! :) happy creating
Does the polyurethane withstand the heat of ash or incense matches in your experience? I made an air dry clay ashtray like this that I haven't sealed yet and I keep seeing that there isn't much that can help totally seal air dry clay from the heat
it’s heat resistant but i definitely do not recommend burning the lit tip of anything onto the surface of your ashtray. an incense holder could be okay but still a safety hazard. i would utilize for decoration purposes unless it’s a ceramic tray with proper glaze
unfortunately no :( this ashtray is for decorative purposes. putting a cigarette out on something like this would damage the art piece and is a fire hazard
i have a tendency to make things take longer than they should lolol but usually like 1 hour for sculpting, the drying time varies, then about 1-4 hours for painting & sealing depending on complexity and my mindset
the sealer i use now is polyurethane. it’s heat resistant but not fire resistant. some sealers can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. because of this i’ve labeled my ashtrays as decorative pieces only. they could probably hold a cigarette in place to catch ashes but the burning tip shouldn’t touch the surface. i still wouldn’t recommend this because it can potentially be dangerous. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. i also think ceramic clay is where you could make an ashtray way more functional and safe.

I have a Question... this is one of the thing I read on air dry clay : "You shouldn't make ashtrays with air dry clay. It's a porous material that will get burned if it gets in contact with a burning cigarette. Also, you can't wash air modeling clay items, so you won't be able to clean them." So, I was wondering if the "mudpod" had something special in it making it flammable? Otherwise, I don't really want to lose my time making an ashtray I won't be able to use. On another note, I wanted to say that I really liked to see how you created the ashtray, the method could be applied to other items, anyway I do think so... Thank you for the video, and for anyone who knows the answer and reply
as long as you don’t actually press the cigarette or whatever you smoke into the ashtray. the lit tip of one is what makes it potentially dangerous. these are more for decoration purposes. although, i do use a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant making it safer to use. if you want an ashtray you can actually get the most out of, with no worries, use actual ceramic clay. and thank you, im glad you enjoyed watching! :)
@@thesentimentalhummingbird I just read that using a metal insert, like a tin can... but to make it easier, I will cut and paste, my English can be terrible lol "To make a safe and functional homemade clay ashtray, you need to use a metal insert to protect the clay. Short tin cans are perfect. You can build the clay around them. Make sure you only clean it with a damp cloth, and never leave a burning cigarette unattended. Especially in an air dry clay tray." So, I haven't tried it, but I will when I do have a chance... and I will also try to find a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant, waterproof also if possible... probably will be like finding glove fireproof and level 9 cut resistant... was a pain in my "butt" lol

Hey girl! Me again lol. I just decided to come back an tell you what I found out. I was watching an epoxy resin ashtray video, and the girl says that hers hasn't burn when using it. She even put a torch on it and the only thing that happened is that the ashtray got a black mark but it was easy to clean with a wipe.
ooooo thank you for the information! i’ve been wanting to experiment more with epoxy resin and i figured it would be the best option to seal these type of ashtrays :)

What kind of mod podge did you used to use? Does it not get burned if you put out a cigarette on it?
i used mod podge gloss water based sealer. i don’t use it anymore but i know it can withstand high tempatures. i use polyurethane now, a higher quality sealer that is heat resistant
girl im so scared i made a pickle rick and normal rick ash tray with model magic and didn’t read the label that said don’t use with hot items, i hope the mod podge saves it😭

gracias! :D y si, se pudiera quemar. este proyecto es más para decoración porque es potencialmente peligrosa con los cigarrillos ya que mi sellador (poliuretano, polyurethane en inglés) solo es resistente al calor, no al fuego. la pintura sola, sin sellador, probablemente también se quemaría. sugiero usar arcilla de cerámica real en un horno para un cenicero verdaderamente funcional, aunque tendría que investigar más. tal vez haya un sellador que se pueda usar que sea resistente al fuego y seguro para fumar

I’ve been wanting to start making some ashtrays for my shop and I was just wondering how you package and ship them out so there’s no damages? I’m only used to shipping little clay earrings so I’m not too familiar with larger pieces
I purchased 6x6x2 inch foldable boxes from ULINE! They fit the size of my trays and other similarly sized clay pieces very well. I wrap them with bubble wrap to keep them safe and tissue paper to fill in any space in the box so they don’t move around during transit

What temp and time do you do when putting the air dry clay in the oven ?
the lowest tempature possible, mine is 200F. the time needed varies but i check on them every 30 mins. i’ve kept some in for hours and some just 30 mins, it really depends on the thickness. if you’ve never used your oven to dry clay before check on it every few minutes or so to make sure it’s not cracking because some ovens just built different. just be cautious since some clays aren’t always safe in the oven!! :) happy creating
Does the polyurethane withstand the heat of ash or incense matches in your experience? I made an air dry clay ashtray like this that I haven't sealed yet and I keep seeing that there isn't much that can help totally seal air dry clay from the heat
it’s heat resistant but i definitely do not recommend burning the lit tip of anything onto the surface of your ashtray. an incense holder could be okay but still a safety hazard. i would utilize for decoration purposes unless it’s a ceramic tray with proper glaze

unfortunately no :( this ashtray is for decorative purposes. putting a cigarette out on something like this would damage the art piece and is a fire hazard

i have a tendency to make things take longer than they should lolol but usually like 1 hour for sculpting, the drying time varies, then about 1-4 hours for painting & sealing depending on complexity and my mindset
is it safe to use it as a real ashtray??
the sealer i use now is polyurethane. it’s heat resistant but not fire resistant. some sealers can also become toxic when burned and in general, the appearance of your ashtray can be ruined. because of this i’ve labeled my ashtrays as decorative pieces only. they could probably hold a cigarette in place to catch ashes but the burning tip shouldn’t touch the surface. i still wouldn’t recommend this because it can potentially be dangerous. i plan to look into what would work to sustain the aesthetic and safety of my trays. epoxy resin seems like a good bet but i’d have to research and test it out. i also think ceramic clay is where you could make an ashtray way more functional and safe.

I have a Question... this is one of the thing I read on air dry clay :
"You shouldn't make ashtrays with air dry clay. It's a porous material that will get burned if it gets in contact with a burning cigarette. Also, you can't wash air modeling clay items, so you won't be able to clean them."
So, I was wondering if the "mudpod" had something special in it making it flammable?
Otherwise, I don't really want to lose my time making an ashtray I won't be able to use.
On another note, I wanted to say that I really liked to see how you created the ashtray, the method could be applied to other items, anyway I do think so...

as long as you don’t actually press the cigarette or whatever you smoke into the ashtray. the lit tip of one is what makes it potentially dangerous. these are more for decoration purposes. although, i do use a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant making it safer to use. if you want an ashtray you can actually get the most out of, with no worries, use actual ceramic clay. and thank you, im glad you enjoyed watching! :)

I just read that using a metal insert, like a tin can... but to make it easier, I will cut and paste, my English can be terrible lol

So, I haven't tried it, but I will when I do have a chance... and I will also try to find a polyurethane sealant that is heat resistant, waterproof also if possible... probably will be like finding glove fireproof and level 9 cut resistant... was a pain in my "butt" lol
