I'm Macedonian, and have a friend that's from exactly the region this Macedonian folk song originated. The whole text and song is not easy singing in Macedonian. I appreciate and thank you both for this wonderful song not to perish. The name of this fairy is called Dimna Juda. Dimna or Divna means beautiful in Macedonian, and Juda is a generic name for fairies. We also call them Majki which means mothers and Samodiva/Samovila which means fairies. Unfortunately fairies in Macedonian folk tales like humans in real life, can be malevolent or benevolent towards humans. There are folk tales where they have saved heroes or granted them magical powers as a sign of gratitude on something they've helped before, whether it was saving their fairy's child from a snake bite or untying impossible knots from their hair, they would then turn as big step sisters for life for the hero, whenever he was in trouble. On the other hand, some were evil and demanded blood tribute. In our Macedonian folktales, fairies know every flower by name and can cure any illness, they sit on the top of a mountain so they can comb their hair which is very long and the source of their might, also we call them the "unclean" ones. Apparently they love bathing in streams or rivers. And people with some kind of illness would often gift them apples or white cloths so they can heal them, by washing near the source of their gathering. Fairies also love to sing and dance, usually nearby old trees , like oaks around midnight till the break of dawn. We Macedonians say they are from a another dimension and we cant see them, maybe just hear them or their songs,...., but the dogs, the donkeys, the cows and other animals can see them clearly as day. They usually wear white robes, if you steal their robe, you can subdue them. We say, don't go out at or around midnight, maybe you'll step on a fairy by accident and she will freeze your face or jaw as punishment, and then you will have to look for Bajacka (Macedonian female shaman). Bajacka in Macedonian, means a person who speaks in tongues, says incantations and performs exorcism for example using the embers inside the coal etc. Believe it or not, but exorcism was based from the old ways, old religion........what Christian priests do today, comes all from that. We say, what is Godly, what is Divine, it will never perish, only transforms under another name. Amen.
